When Dr. Hill betrayed Rosemary, I wondered whether he was also a secret coven member, and not just an innocent dupe.
@LannieLord
@LannieLord 12 дней назад
That is a BIG debate .. BUT ultimately - Dr. Hill is NOT part of the group and just thinks Rosemary is "bonkers".

They made a big deal about her not seeing Dr hill. I think back then women were seen as kind owned by their husband's so when she told hill everything he was probably just worried for her mental health so called her husband to come

Excellent recap, I really enjoyed your presentation. Yes, I think it’s easily in the top five horror films ever made.

Definitely a classic. I do admit, the first time I saw, I didn't get what the big deal was, but subsequent viewings have improved it for me. I should also say that the ending is the only part of the film I don't like. It felt a bit too conclusive while the rest of the film was mostly ambiguous as whether or not the horror stuff is actually happening or if it's psychosomatic. But it doesn't hurt the film for me. Also, congrats, Jason (great picks BTW). You've got me beat for now. And, as always, Noah, stay classy!

I think the ending isn’t too clear-cut as we see Rosemary is initially horrified by the truth, but her maternal instinct kicks in when she begins rocking the bassinet with Adrian inside. There is a TV sequel that is terrible from what I heard that follows after the events here & of course we’re getting the prequel about Terry & her story prior to the “accident” coming soon to streaming

Sometimes I find it hard to separate the content from its creator. There is a very fine line with that. I used to love Leon The Professional directed by Luc Beeson with a 12 year old Natalee Portman, Jean Reno, and Gary Oldman. I used to defend it saying the relationship between Jean Reno's character and Portman's character was more a Father/Daughter relationship. Then on the 25th anniversary dvd, Luc Beeson ex wife does an interview and that it is based on their relationship......... I no longer recommend the film. I don't see that problem here and I love this film, but I am a sucker for atmosphere. I do find some of the satanic symbolism funny and dated though.

During the filming of this movie Mia and Frank Sinatra were divorcing mainly because of the movies conflicting time scheduel between the couple. When Mia chose to continue with her role as Rosemary...Frank chose to file for a divorce. In fact Mia tearfully signed her divorce papers on the set of the film. And even though everyone who has ever watched her impeccable performance as Rosemay knows she deserved an academy award...the Academy didn't even nominate her due to the powerful influence and pressure of her spiteful ex husband...Frank Sinatra.

Sadly the divorce may not be the only issue. It seems horror movies never get serious recognition by critics for anything. Horror with mysteries a close follow up are step children. I am surprised the film got any awards because critics can be so stuffy.

I remember reading that Sinatra did this to her & at first I thought it was just a story, but learning it was true makes it worse. Knew the guy could be a massive jerk, but this is especially cruel. Thankfully Mia stuck to her guns cause she is amazing here and did get away from Sinatra

@@LucyLioness100 It is really sad that stars are wealthy and famous can stoop to being small and petty. Shows that having so much does not erase character flaws. One actor found out that her relationship with a star was over when he announced it at a show! Incredibly mean and cowardly.

Truly one of the most terrifying psychological thrillers. Mia Farrow is beyond perfect as the innocent Rosemary, but the supporting cast are no slouch either as they are the anchors of the dark side Rosemary will soon by embroiled in. It’s definitely hard to separate art from artist with regard to Polanski, but I can do it enough to applaud the films themselves. I also recommend the book if you’re curious, but the movie really is close to the book overall only with minor differences

Discovered this because British Film Institute (BFI) members have voted Rosemary's Baby as the No. 1 Horror Film and are screening it again in December (2024). I've never seen it - it looks like a. brilliant film (great analysis, here) but I think it would be too traumatic for me to watch!

Always interested in how color is used in movies. In this one there seems to be a lot of yellow, Rosemary wears it, Minnie wears it, the kitchen appliances and table are yellow, it couldn’t just be an homage to mid sixties style - yet in the movie it’s not necessarily in your face but it is noticeable. Especially since it’s a color that doesn’t seem to be used much today.

This is one of my favorite films that means even more now than when it was first released. One of the biggest issues, even by women who did not consider themselves strongly feminist hated the lack of decision making for Rosemary - why can't she chose her own OB? Guy about the locket, now here is a self absorbed person who suddenly cares about her wearing it. But why does she have to wear every damn day? Ok, wear the wedding ring every day but why not switch jewelry? The dessert scene really bothered me - this is not a toddler refusing to eat vegetables. This is a grown woman who does not like the dessert. Why can't she say she is not eating it? My blood was boiling. About the book and film - it surprised me that she did not work, especially married to an actor who has not really made it yet. In my working class neighborhood pregnant women had jobs. (A neighbor was 8 mos pregnant and working in gardening equipment, no joke). However, this would not have fit in with the plot of the book or film - she would have been around people who would know that the pain was distinctly abnormal. She was cut off from outside influence but unfortunately she went along with it. Another scene that made me furious is Guy taking the book away from her, first on a high shelf and then later saying he got rid of it. Hey he had no right to do that to a grown woman. I hid my copy of Lady Chatterly's Lover in my room where my parents would not find it. I was 12 years old, people. The scene I would have liked to see happens when she is threatened with going to a mental hospital, she should have gone but the husband and the devious doc would never have had that. She was supposed to go along quietly. About Doctor Hill, can't blame him. Ofc she sounded crazy.

Good assessment. It doesn't seem to me that the husband is in on it from the beginning. It seemed like he was innocent until he made a deal with the devil. Or did i miss something?
@LucyLioness100

Guy does make a deal with the coven that he gives Rosemary over as a vessel for the Antichrist in return for a successful career. He’s definitely not a bad person to start with, but after he meets Roman & Minnie that’s when the transformation begins. It’s the same way in the book also that he starts off a decent enough schmuck, but becomes a douche as the story goes on and you figure out he gave his wife over to SA’ed by Satan and have a demon spawn child

I agree with your opinion of Polansky as a person but I do separate that from the person's work. However, thinking of him as a good director, I just don't understand a big editing glitch. In the book, Guy forgets to buy the dessert for the romantic dinner - part of the plot with the neighbor brings mousse. But that is why Guy's remark "who says there's nothing to esp"? makes no sense. Was there a scene where he mentions forgetting dessert that ended up on the cutting room floor? I am surprised Polanski didn't fix that.

I can enjoy a couple of Polanski’s films just fine and can separate his terrible personal behavior from the art, but still agree he’s not a great person (and a predator)

Im sure nobody wants to dwell on what Polanski did wrong (and it was very very wrong) but I needed to hear no more when he freely admitted that hed done that many times before and would have continued had he not been caught when he did in an interview shortly after he fled. Why Wes Anderson so feverishly defends him is far beyond me.

Oh dear GOD: PLEASE STOP putting "The Omen" in the same category as "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Exorcist". JUST STOP !! The Omen is a piece of CRAP . People get killed - one by one , in a cookie-cutter PLOT . The movie itself is .. not scary . The acting is wooden. The ONLY great scene is when the nanny hangs herself in front of the children's birthday party. Exorcist and Rosemary are unique and complex . And HOLD UP very well today. The Omen feels cheap and dated . I am an older person and saw all these movies in the theatre when they were new !!
