I bought a used Rossi 60 ducted fan engine and Byron fan at the Toledo swap meet. There was a tuned pipe in my swap meet "haul" but it was not the "reverse outlet" one that the Byron pusher ducted fan requires. Also, it appeared as though I was missing the aluminum header pipe. The only time I ran that engine was early at the flying field when I was alone. In place of the missing aluminum header pipe, I substituted about 5 inches of clear blue silicone tubing and some cable ties either side. I bolted on a Master Airscrew 11x6 propeller for a load. It seemed about right! The first time it fired up, it blew the exhaust silicone tubing off the engine. I added more cable ties but there is not a lot of room to clamp things down. Boy, was that engine LOUD (with the pipe connected) and FEROCIOUS! And THIRSTY. I could see the fuel tank level drop in real time - I think I was using a 10 oz tank and 10% nitro. When the engine came on peak, the blades of the prop flexed forward. I really thought they were gonna come off! Pity, I never got the engine speed - there was too much else to worry about. Finally, after only a short running time, the silicone tube LET GO - as in tore in two! On close examination, the inside of the silicone tube was eaten away as if one had used a rasp and a blow-torch at the same time! Yikes! A very scary brute of an engine indeed. I was exploring the possibility of putting this engine in a foam F-16 kit converted to DF (not pusher prop). If I could barely tame this beast on the test stand, it probably wasn't going match a foam kit!

It went surprisingly well.

This needs a q40 pylon prop 7.8x6, This engine will run close to 30000rpms. That prop is way too big and wont allow it to jump on the pipe. The size of the carb is an indication of just how high this engine will rev...yes it needs that much air so given the engines small size it needs to rev to flow it!
@dmrcflyr2
@dmrcflyr2 6 лет назад
I might actually have a prop similar to that, but that seems pretty small. No way I am running this engine with that prop, seeing as the engine isn't mine.

www.rc-base.com/engine/rossi/rossi-r40-pylon I believe the link above is the same engine. Rated at 27000 rpm so a pylon prop would let it unload. Though totally understand as it's not your engine. Spares would be non-existent! Beautiful engine though. Rossi's are well made.

@@dmrcflyr2 it's a racing engine made for high revs, it will suffer more on a 10x6......

Please forgive my lack of detailed knowledge of these engines, but the legend went that these engines used to really scream and peak out way above at least 20K RPM
@dmrcflyr2
@dmrcflyr2 5 лет назад
Hi. Well you know about legends....most are false. The only way this engine would turn that sort of RPM is if way TOO small of a prop was on it. Even then you are tempting fate with disastrous results.
@orion_13
@orion_13 3 года назад
They can but not for very long. My experience is that 18k is about max after break-in period. Now if you want to talk about the newer R46f pylon then max power is reported by the factory of "R.P.M. (max power): 33.900 RPM". So not all Rossi now or even an older one are equal.

those were one of the motors of choice years back for pattern planes. they hauled ass. loved them and piccos.

For pattern planes? I don't think so :)

I was having stage fright, watching and being afraid that it wouldn't run. It came with a piece of pipe that had been cut off of the header. That piece is about an inch long. So right or wrong someone tuned it. I didn't have a tach when I ran so only 11 was a surprise. Milt

The engine didn't seems to peak in the characteristic way when it hits the tuned region. More revs needed I guess. Thanks for the video.

I have PLENTY of cleaning videos on this channel. You just need to look at them. This link shows you how to search a RU-vid channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SM4mroc1slU.html

Do you still have this engine and would you like to sell it? Need the proper historical power for my Prather F1 build!

Hi ,I have the same engine ,it has never been started but it seems to lock up a bit when the piston reaches top dead centre,do you think that this is just that it has never been started?
@shawndubay4050
@shawndubay4050 2 года назад
Yup they are machined very tightly from the factory. The roughness will soften up after a properly done run in/break in period. Most if not all of my engines on my planes where like that until fully broken in/ run in. Now they all are smooth as glass to hand prop, have great compression and scream through the sky like angry yellow jackets. Rossi, Thundertiger, OS and even a old Fox engine. All are 40s and rip when you add nitro, a plug heater and a good flip of the propeller.
@ottofraser4879
@ottofraser4879 Год назад
Dont turn the engine over top death point without a mounted glowplug , because the piston can seize. Always fast turning, never slow , for the same reason ;)

That really runs beautiful, but (my estimate) on the stand it probably won't really come on the pipe (it looks like a fairly short pipe to me), and if you intend to fly it, you will find out what the remote needle is for.... :D These are really good engines (but that rear intake is not exactly convenient I always hated that)....
@dmrcflyr2
@dmrcflyr2 6 лет назад
It isn't my engine and I do not intend to fly it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vIp_Lbxm7wg.html

it is a thoroughbred pylon engine. don't be concerned with a (Harley Davidson idle) It will really sing on a 9X8. You need to let the engine unload to really come on the pipe. A 10X6 will hold the engine back.
@dmrcflyr2
@dmrcflyr2 6 лет назад
I'll see if I have a 9x8. I know I have some 8" diameter props that Milt provided.

My last piped engine (an OPS 60 RE) I used an APC 10X10. it really came alive. The lower con rod bushing doesn't last long on piped engines. lol

For the first run is better to have low compression valve open then put high rpms and also open the high compression valve, while keeping the carburator open then you can adjust fine the low compresion valve. Afterwards start closing to a lean mixture the high compression valve but until some runa. After many runs then you can start closing both valves and you should not be having trouble with the engine turning off and look forward to achieve maximum response and power from the engine.
