Agree! I also saw it and was mesmerized by her voice. There are mezzos & then there are what I call "Carmen-mezzos". Aigul is exactly that! Singing the nuances & moods of the character perfectly! I hope to see (& hear!) her in a traditional production of "Carmen", which I prefer to this modern adaptation.
What a fabulous voice and of course I have just heard in Carmen at Covent Garden, but after hearing her gorgeous voice this is the kind of repertoire she should be sticking with lots of bel canto roles for her mezzo voice, Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini and the heavier roles like Verdi later when her voice has fully evolved.
So…. more “amazing” to you than Stignani, Simoniato, Berganza, Horne, Cossoto, etc. This is a lovely singer, but getting through “Non piu mesta” in a tightly controlled setting without an audience or sets and costumes is not “amazing.” It’s “young mezzo basics.”
