We got ahold of an old Sachs KM-914 Wankel Rotary engine. Lets see if we can get it running again after many years. This particular model has a governor installed so it must have been sold to run something at a set rpm. Anyone know more about these things? Let us know in the comments.

I've got the same engine, had it for 8 years, been fully rebuild ported & polished, I'm running a bigger carburetor & a belt driven roots supercharger on mine. Awesome little engines!!

Is it bad for the engine to disconnect governor or it is there to protect whatever it should be powering?

Had that engine in My 1970 Arctic Cat 303 Panther. Got it up to 50 mph. was a very good trail breaker over the rest of all snowmobiles.

That’s exactly what was wrong with mine! The seals deteriorated and gummed up the flow of fuel. Bypassed that and it runs like a champ 😊

The KM-914 in snowmobiles is 303 cc per chamber, a bit wider, other dimensions same, as KM-24 and KC-27 in Hercules Wankel W-2000 motorcycle, having intake in front plate, worse. With adequate tuning, the Wankel Club people got nearly 40 HP from a KM-914 for an snowmobile race. The Yanmar Diesel SAE Technical Papers depict good results with Reed-Valve controlled Intake. Kawasaki obtained a patent on Combustion promoting changes in plug hole for Wankel. Blessings +

These were set up to run a generator. They ran slow, I’m guessing about 3600 rpm. That’s why the listed HP is only about 16. The Arctic Cat version was actually two variations on the KM914B 300cc and used from 1968 to 1972. No governor on that one. First gen was 18.5hp and that was phased out after the 1970 model run with the leftovers being used up in the Lynx economy model. 1971 and 1972 Panthers used the second gen with a bigger intake port and 20hp. They would twist to 7000 rpm and just scream like a Stuka. After a swap to a bigger carb and some suspension mods to reduce track drag my 1972 would top out about 60 mph. Pretty good for basic 1966 engine tech. It’s a rotary. It likes a LOT of fuel. I ran super unleaded and Klotz super techniplate at 40-1. Never had seal issues with that combo and I drove it HARD.

Thats a score, that one mustve been an actual stationary engine. I bet that fuel tank and governor are dang near impossible to find

it hurts. have a km48 here. just a decoration now. i have no idea who pulled it apart... but they were the type of person that shouldnt have. theres chunks of trochoid taken out where theyve pried the case apart, gouged the endplates, must have used the rotor as a bowling ball, taken every corner off, and looks like they used a pick axe to remove the old seals.

It's best fuel to Power ratio is at 4000RPM It is rated 16 DIN HP @ 4500 RPM That is roughly 11.8 KW Long term power i.e. electric Generator or such things is allowed to be ~ 10KW I use 2-3% racing fully synthetic two cycle oil. It does not like long term idle.... The old wankel saying... "a redline a day keeps the rebuild away". In germany they also used them in a bike called the Hercules W2000... but they broke down from time to time because they did not like traffic or going above the redline.... hence the speed govenor, wich adjustable and has it's own oil. With modern and good 2cycle Oil most problems are gone today. Lead or lead replacement means subsequent death to the engine. And last but not least: The Exhaust is an "Ejector" type. That means Exhaus gasses pull Air between the outer and inner Wall of the Exhaust. On the first power run taking longer than a minute or so you will know why. My thinking is that the Exhaust would melt straight of, if it wasn't for the cooling.

Would you happen to remember what wires do what? I picked up one of these, but I'm having a hard time understanding what wires I need to install a kill switch.
