Removing a rotor using a puller. It's best to use a puller made specifically for the removal of rotors, however, this may work in your case. Note, there is a chance the rotor may break if the puller isn't latched on correctly - so be careful. Don't forget to wear safety glasses!

Great work!!!. It took me and my son over 14 hours . Using blaster 3 lbs hammer, impact wrench. Bolts into the rotor snapped, nothing worked . But the wheel puller finally did. It broke the rotor plate first try, Then wheel pulled the drum.No fun at all. And not for the weak hearted. Just takes a solid effort. But can be done. Thanks for the video. That did help.

Thanks very much for posting this video. I followed your link and picked up the 8" puller from Amazon. I had brought my Honda to a garage and they claimed they couldn't get the rotor off and wanted to charge me $800 for front and rear brakes. It looked a pretty solid case of garage blackmail. So I told them forget it but I let them do the back brakes. I just got the front rotor off using the tool you posted a link for and the rotor came off using a craftsman air impact tool and your puller. This video was a lifesaver. Thanks.

I would suggest use some love taps when you get a slight bind you can destroy your thread on puller. Also safer since you won't have excessive tension. Another would be keep a lug nut at end of threads so don't fly at you

However, these rotors were so bad I still needed to hammer from behind the rotor with a mini sledge while using the puller to create pulling force on the rotor. I’ve had rotors fly off due to the amount of torque to remove it with a rotor puller. Stand off to the side and use a longer wrench or breaker bar unless you want to eat a rotor.

I would use a jaw puller with light pressure. Spray the pb blaster and let it sit for a few hours which will work even better. Pull it off and wack it with a hammer. You can damage the axle nut, drive shaft, and gears in the transmission using this method with excessive force.

@ocp1669
@ocp1669 5 лет назад
All pullers like this you can use an impact wrench on, now the ones that are not specifically impact rated if you don't use them lightly they will mess up the threads and shorten the life span of the tool. Ideally use some grease or other lubrication on the threads and use the impact wrench sparingly a little here and there. The trick is not letting the threads get too warm/hot. Also using this kind of puller you don't really want to just impact on it until it "pops". That's a serious hazard depending on what you are working with. A rotor isn't that bad but other uses can be. What you really want to do is to get it tight, get some decent tension on it either with a wrench, socket, or impact just don't keep going until it pops, go until it's fairly tight and hit the end with a hammer a few times. It will loosen up some then tighten it down a little more and continue the process. Or if you don't mind a trip to the hospital just keep going at it and roll the dice.

@RRVideosAndSound
@RRVideosAndSound 7 лет назад
The wheel bearing is fine because there is no stress on the cup or race. The stress is in the same direction of axle shaft, unless you bend the axle, which is impossible compared to bending the steering knuckle. People bend steering knuckles using the steering knuckle with the bolt method

Dude I just spent 2 hours beating the living hell out of the rotors on my 2022 Crv. I had to bend the dust shield back put the car in neutral and take a full size sludge hammer to the back of the rotors Turing then ever few hits to get them off. Why are the tolerances so tight on the hub to the inside of the rotors. A lip of rust build up that was preventing them from coming off. I am buying a puller I will never go through this again. I have never in 29 years of doing my brakes had an issue even close to this.

The socket that you used for extension is rated for torsional stress. Your extension action puts tensile/compressive stress due to bending moment and sockets are not made to handle that. Please use the right tool such as breaker-bar or a proper extension to do the job right without getting hurt.

Steel has a nearly isotropic modulus of elasticity meaning it is equally strong is tension/compression no matter the orientation of the applied stress. The stress from bending that he applied is nowhere near the limit of the shear stress from torque that this socket is rated for.

@safelinefleet6633
@safelinefleet6633 8 лет назад
Most, if not all rotors will have two threaded holes, usually M8 or M10, depending on the rotor size on their face. All you have to do is thread down a long enough bolt through these threaded holes, and once they hit the inner mating face, just go down a couple of threads over each bolt, and voila!, you'll have the rotor out in no time and trouble. They are called extractor holes back where I live.... I have a fleet of 28 cars, and trust me, they work fine every time, and with every car !

+Safe Line Fleet Very true indeed!
@robertgantry2118
@robertgantry2118 8 лет назад
+Safe Line Fleet I'd say maybe most, certainly not ALL. I'm here because my 2012 Ram 2500 doesn't have the threaded holes. The one in the video does, but that doesn't help me. I've used "Powerful PB Blast" and a 3lb steel mallet, so far without success. I don't have a torch. Any ideas?
@Stepclimb
@Stepclimb 8 лет назад
I have had two rotors that were so rusted, that when the 8mm bolts were threaded in, the rotor merely cracked as the area around the threaded holes was lifted and the rest of the rotor stayed put. Only heating with a MAP/O2 torch and a 3 jaw puller were able to get the rotor off. Operating a vehicle in a cold climate where salt is used to De-ice roads really sucks when it comes to maintenance and rust.
@safelinefleet6633
@safelinefleet6633 8 лет назад
+Stepclimb There are always exceptional situations, as yours. They probably add up to like in 1 in 1000, 100000 maybe. And the best part is that you count as that one ! Sure, as you say , de-icing salts can wreck havoc on the undercarriage and other components that it makes contact with. I live by the sea, here in Chennai, India, where the temperature is a min 30 deg C during winter, and 44-45 deg C in summer, with a humidity level of 92-99% most of the time. And the humidity comes from salt laden sea water. This stuff corrodes and spoils every part of the car - body rust, door hinges, wheel bolts when you have a flat..... So, you can cheer in the knowledge that you have to deal with man made salt conditions, down here, God and Nature does it for us.... ha ha !

Instead of going for the socket and extension to get better leverage I think it would be a lot better if you just took a 2 to 5lb sledge, or whatever bfh you have and hit the end a few times this will loosen things up a bit and allow you to keep tightening so when it does break free it's not coming free with as much force. Also if you need additional leverage you can also use an open ended wrench, pipe, or whatever you can find.

didn't that rotor have 2 bolt holes in it? A steering wheel puller would take it off with the right sized bolts to fit the tapped holes on the face by the lugs. because your not driving the force out but in the center it requires less force to slid off also you can tap the rotor with a mallet or ball peen hammer as you tighten up the tool. I'll bet it is 2 cars the first one he broke the rotor pulling the vent channels because cast iron is brittle, I think it has a higher carbon content? but I'm not sure..

Terrible. The puller is being abused (used wrong) and your lucky you didn't ruin it.
