I concur with you Penelope, this episode and plenty others tells a story about volumes of deliberate omissions in narrating the history of our land. Most (if not all of them) stories are narrated to better paint the grouping in power.
The conformist approach the ANC took is what has made SA to be still standing today better than alot of our fellow Africans and even better than other colonized countries in places like south America. A negotiated settlement did more good than harm for us compared to a military take over. People who glorify military take overs have a very selective view of history. Every time a military has taken over as opposed to a democratically elected government, its almost always followed by a terrible dictatorship that oppresses its people even worse than the previous regime. Call Mandela, Tambo and all the ANC leaders than wanted to seat and listen to the oppressor all you want but they were wise beyond their time. Having seen the fate of their fellow liberation movements lead their countries to the ground with impunity, they would have been stupid to continue in the same vein. Part of why we do not have issues with terrorist groups in SA is largely because the military has always been kept far away from the levers of power which is the opposite in many other African countries. You are being dishonest and malicious. South Africa is not stranding, South African has been falling. Remember those "fellow Africans" got their libration in the 50's and 60's that is over 70 years ago. The ANC South African "libration" happened 29 years ago, we are already looking those "fellow Africans" you are looking down on in half the time. I repeat, in HALF THE TIME. You speak of the levers of power, again being dishonest. Because since the pandemic, the ANC government has been deploying the military in civil matters so the military and state security has being consumed by the ANC. In HALF THE TIME. The worst is that the ANC South African libration has nothing to show for it. The youth are uneducated and those with skills are seating at home. There is nothing but growing death and suffering here, the same oppressors they "negotiated with" is what the ANC has become. Now the youth of this country has to deal with this monster that subjects them to hunger, violence and eventual death called the ANC.
