Into High Country Episode 8 Season 9 Jason hunts the Badlands for Public Land Mule Deer in Montana. After commiting to a nasty hike, Jason finds the buck he is after...
This man makes the best hunting videos I have ever seen. Not the high fence bs public land you can tell he truly cares about the animals he takes and is thankful this is what I strive to be as a hunter
Howdy Jason. That is a very nice older mature mule deer! Your own public land secret honey hole paid off nicely. And you are correct, we need to take care of our resources so they will be there for future generations to enjoy. Thanks again Jason! Later no Sir....
Fantastic hunt. Sure does bring memories. I've been in some of those horrendous canyons but that's where the big, old boys tend to be. And you can't go wrong with a .270. Been hunting with one for 58 years and still doing it! I have a lot of other calibers but a .270 Win. will always be the faithful one. Great video. The way you presented it, I was right there with you. Thank you for taking us along with you on this great hunt!
Absolutely take it all in. The time you wish you could live over and over and over. The sights, the sounds, the smells, the feeling of the air, the friends you are with.
You bring the spirit of the hunt, the love of the land and the effort brought together to achieve the result. The out of the way places and the monarchs that call them home are the ultimate prize ... Congratulations to your efforts and for sharing...
Jason, I'll admit I'm not really one for scripted narrations when watching hunting videos, but you are one heck of a storyteller. Then to watch the hunt unfold... Outstanding work!
Anthony Lucia I really appreciate your comment! Believe it or Not I actually don’t script any of my narrations. I use bucket points and go from there. Thank you for following!
Thank you for being a good hunter and putting him down quickly where he didn't have to suffer. I've hunted all my life and it's nice to see good hunters who make it a quick kill. Food on the table . This was a great video on how to do it right
Seen this hunt a few times. I hunt similar country, south of the 'river' . Love your content . Defended your romanticism of the hunt on my lunch break today, as we need more thoughtfulness in the video content that is out there as it portrays 'us' in a better light. You're the best Jason keep up the good work!
You truly capture the essence of what it means to be a hunter in MT. Me being a native MT Hunter as well, I couldn’t be more proud. You are a fucking legend. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen from you.
Very well done. An investment of a back you can carry your rifle in would be suggested and trekking poles. That is some steep country. I was hoping for a different caliber of rifle but it wasn’t a 3006 so that’s good. can’t have it all. Lol. Great story and video.
I agree. The deer didn't have to suffer and 2 clean shots that made it fast. I'm no pro hunter but I do like to hunt but I also don't like seeing any animal suffer from a bad shot or suffer at all no matter what the cause. This guy took his time and did it right.
Keep living your dream brother congratulations kudos to you for the effort you put into your hunts if you will truly understand what it means I am one that does also very beautiful rifle. nice shot Those of us that understand, the next season is an anticipated event
the comments are always awesome.... i love that people who have never experienced a small percentage of what you experience can criticize you for: taking too long to shoot, shooting twice, not shooting the bedded deer, bash the mule deer foundation etc..... blah blah blah. seriously beautiful deer, great video, great experience. I miss montana so much. it is killing me not being there. finally going to get a mt tag again this year and I cannot wait to get there. keep up the good work.
That's one of the coolest bucks I've seen. I love those tall, tight racks. Gorgeous area. Thanks Jason for what you do, and for sharing with those of us who may not have these opportunities. :-)
An ethical hunter. Good to see. Many less patient hunters would have taken frontal shots and the results could have been much different. Nice job. I don't say that to many hunters who post stuff on line. Even if you would have backed off and have left him the experience would have just as valuable. When I first started hunting a special bit of canyon land in the Bighorns I found a group of 5 deer on the opposite side of a canyon. With another steep canyon on the other side of the small plateau they were on. About 400 yards away. When the biggest lay down his belly swelled up toward the sky like a big old steer's does. Biggest bodied deer I've ever seen. Typical antlers but huge. I watched them for at least 15 minutes and then decided to pass on a shot. Too far for a sure kill for me and I thought I'd never be able to get to him. I've been back to the spot many times and I still think I was right about that. My reward is that many years later I can still him lying there. And I can still feel the beauty of those canyons that were at that point forking off into three separate deep canyons that emptied into the desert 3K feet below. T'hat is still my favorite place to hunt and to play even when it's foo hot and dry to hunt. And you're right, it's not just the deer - it's all of it.
I sure hope I can become a great hunter and have a shot like this. I’ve had some bad luck the last couple years, but I’m still a beginner and have a lot to learn in regards to patience.
Jason ,Great video,Great hunter, and a bit of luck make for a Great man/hunter. Your dad must be very proud of you. I really really enjoyed watching the video. We’re you able to take the meats/horns up or down that steep canyon?
Of course it would. Please contact your regional FWP biologist and tell them it does effect mature male deer numbers. I have witnessed this in the area I live. There was 120inches of snow on the plains in a 3 county area the winter of 2010-11. Public land hunters came fall of 2011 and 2012 but there were almost no deer. The word got out and there was little to no pressure for the next 2-3 yrs so the deer that survived were able to get some age on them. As a result in the fall of 2014 and 15 there many deer taken that were near 200 inches (many is 10-15 that i personally saw photos of just in the county i live) In my opinion, if the pressure is off they have a chance to become older. And when it comes to mule deer, 5-8 yr old deer are what you would consider quality. Of course genetics will play role in antler size but at least you can witness the potential thats out there.
This is what hunting is about killing mature deer, enjoying the experience, and taking in all the important aspects of hunting that makes hunting so special.
The mule deer foundation does nothing for the deer in that area. (@19:52) The deer have what they need right where they are. That statement makes it sound like a foundation planted the trees and grow the grass. Mule deer over 6 or 7 years of age are a rarity on public lands and that is mostly caused by hunting during the rut. If it is so hard to find places, and you really mean mature deer, then use your fame and influence to change the mismanagement of Montana deer herds. The era of "opportunity" has to give way to sound management practices at some point. Montana's public areas are being over hunted and that is the reason why your buck is so hard to find. There are many a hunter out there who would like to see healthier populations of our central and eastern Montana game herds. I have sat and watched nice bulls and bucks for an hour just as Jason did and decided to walk away. I am not a trophy hunter, but sometimes i believe a mature animal is worth more alive than dead, just like catch and release fishing. I like to think that animal could live 3 or 4 more years. It is too bad most hunters harvest animals on public land based on the logic that the next guy to see that animal will harvest it anyway, so I'll take it first. I am not trying to shame anyone here or degrade the work Jason does, which is done well, but the logic in MTFWP management needs to change from opportunity to a little more quality. Not bigger deer, but healthier populations which would include mature deer. Jason, your videos respect the animal and the environment so thank you for not being a fist pumping, "now that's what I'm talking bout" type of hunter. The change in management will have to come from hunters putting pressure on FWP. I hope there are more outdoorsman/women out there that share my thoughts.
kshoey73 I appreciate your thoughtful message and I do agree about bigger deer would come from not being able to hunt the rut. The problem with that is the more we limit hunting and hunters the harder it is to keep this sport alive. Opportunity is key to keeping hunting relevant. So do we want to only shoot big deer every 10 years of our life or do we want our kids and others to be able to fall in love with hunting the same as we have? My statement about the Mule Deer Foundation wasn’t specifically meant for that drainage but the area in general. I know they pay a lot of attention to our herds and their well being and I for one and happy they are. Whether it affected this deer or mule deer in general it’s a win for everyone who loves to see them. Best of luck this season and I really appreciate you tuning in!
What's the hurry? Waiting for a shot your comfortable with is never too long. I took a perfect broadside shot just like the teach in Hunters Education... Thank you for watching!
Maybe it would help if you watch this video again. Jason talked about taking in the majestic surroundings and admiring the animal in its habitat. I believe the saying goes something like, “It’s about the journey not the destination.” For some, it’s about being in the hunt and not just the kill. I agree with Jason that basking in the moment of the present, this is what replenishes the soul!
he was enjoying the moment. the deer wasnt going anywhere. why not wait for the shot you want. i may have killed him where he lay.. not sure... why bother criticizing someone for doing it the way he wanted to do it? I totally understand waiting.
@@jasonmatzingerofficial he didnt shoot the deer in the bed because some one told him it was "unethical" , he panders to an auddience that hasn't spent time on the mountain, those whi do it as life. He is a foreigner to the environment that poses as an inhabitant to pander to people who know less than him. If Grandpa hunted with him he would just shake his head, shoot the deer before it was up and moving or rosking bumping it out of the country and then eat it.
@@jasonmatzingerofficial it is a great shot in the deers bed. No one would ever pass up that shot unless told to do so by a society where "shooting them in bed" is cruel and unsporting. I appose these societal messages because they grow and grow. Dont cater to these ideologies lest we lose our grit
Girl Named Sue I was taught by my father and in hunters safety that when a deer is bedded it’s shoulder blade is forced back covering its vitals. I don’t cater to anything but making the best shot I can. Have a nice day Sue
