Thus far I'm about $550 in on various items added to the bike, double what I paid for the bike. I'm not counting stuff like the rack, bags or lights that I already owned. I had a lot of this stuff on hand already for various ongoing projects. The wheels, stem, cassette, and drivetrain seat and seat post were the things I purchased specifically for this project.
I plan to upgrade the cranks and BB as well as the front fork. I will probably also upgrade to a touring seat made for women by Terry. I obviously need new bar tape.
Affiliate links for incidental items I generally carry with me and are on the bike:
pair of water bottles: amzn.to/3zkcBsp
rear brake light smartish: amzn.to/3XFgMJa
front bag: amzn.to/3L565s1
Feed bag: amzn.to/3VE1Qsl
rockbros kids feedbag, remove cartoon face: amzn.to/4eE4Ld7
I bought a 3rd pair of Antora 2s. They fit me so well and feel really good.
This is a referral code- you get $20 off and I get $20 off. Anyone can get this code from Merrell, they offer it to anyone who orders from their website. refer.merrell....

I get how you felt. I've ridden a trail near me, like you mentioned, in the Fair Hill State Natural Resources Management Area in Maryland on the G1 and I'm running 47mm tires. Actually it turned into a hike-a-bike ride for some of the trail it was so bad. The next days pain I felt was from the tension in my body during the ride. I get tense when the terrain is loose like that. Almost like white-knuckle driving. You're exhausted and achy from being tense for many miles. It's a full body workout for sure not to mention the mental exhaustion from concentrating on keeping the bike upright and picking a line to ride so you don't wipe out. Luckily there are other places to ride and I will never go back to that trail. I'm glad you and your partner made it out and back in one piece. I hope she's not to discouraged about biking after an experience like that.

The trip out was tough but doable for me, much tougher for my wife. She'll keep trying. She as much more into the stand up paddle boards. She found the passing ATVs more stress inducing. That combined with the loose gravel, it was tough. She'll try again though. I'll ride this again but if I do it will be with fat mountain bike tires and probably on a different bike. I do want to ride the whole thing and will ride it eventually. I really want to see what other sections are like. I did from Machias out to mile marker 69 and wasn't this bad. It wasn't the gravel I'm used to at all, but better than this. I like the workout now, but this would have been the pits a year ago.

Hi, I just discovered your channel, I am from mass too but live in florida now, I just bought this bike also. Have you ever down the bike trail in Pittsfield MA, It is real nice, it is 14.2 miles and no motorized .

I have not, will look into it! Sounds like fun.

I applaud your patience. I would go nuts with packs of ATV’s flying by on a washboard trail. Won’t be riding that one any time soon! My feeling is the motorized traffic needs a separate section. If nothing else it’s a safety concern for all riders. Of course this then gets political, but I think the answer is largely more trails so it’s less of a tug and pull.

The ATVs... are a problem for the trail maintenance and non motorized traffic for sure. I think they should put in separated lane for non motorized traffic. When the trail was initially proposed they needed and wanted local support the only way to get it was to get the local ATV riders on board. It was initially proposed for NO motorized traffic like most rail trails. (I grew up just off the trail, about 4 miles away) I distinctly remember the debates about the trail and how locals wanted to make sure it wasn't just for tourists. (I have recorded an episode where I discuss some of the bizarre anti rail trail nonsense I read at the time and how it is mirrored in an article I read recently about a new trail being proposed in Louisiana. I swear the anti trail people regurgitate the same nonsense at every proposed trail meeting.) Anyway, now the trail is mostly only usable for motorized traffic. the section near machias and east machias are pretty decent, as there are volunteers who help to maintain the trail and a LOT of walkers in the area, also due to the street crossings traffic is much slower for the ATV. Funny, the short 2 or 3 miles in machias were the only places where I could really fly on my bike. (also almost got hit by a deer) Next time I'm up there I'm going to explore some more of the logging roads and access roads. I know some of them will be better than this trail. It's just such a bummer, the scenery on this trail is fantastic.

I got the Venzo suspension seat post several years ago after Cycling About did an in death review of them on RU-vid. It works well, certainly save me a lot wear and tear on my spine. Osteoporosis sucks big time. That sounded like it would be a horrid ride even on a mountain bike, how did the Meroca stem go? Sounds like the conditions might have been a bit much for it.

I've been looking at the redshift suspension seat posts, they are well reviewed and I think would make a good addition, though not to this build. Unfortunately for most suspension seat posts I need more gap between the seat and the top tube and I don't have it on the G.1. I was trying out the air seat, I have thoughts, it wasn't good for this ride. The meroca stem did better than expected. The ride out was decent, in that trail conditions changed that much between morning and afternoon. There was a lot of ATV traffic. Their really intense tires are hell on the trail. Also not necessary, they could use smoother tires and get good traction on the gravel, the huge nobbies are good for mud and just cut trail, but not needed on this trail. /rant The stem did well with the small corrugations/washboarding. I've got it on the medium soft spring and it would probably do better on this trail with the medium hard spring. But it certainly saved my arms and wrists some pain, because I had minimal wrist and hand pain. Some stiffness from death gripping the bars but my hands didn't start to feel sore until mile 20 or so. I call that a win. I am going to do a once over on the stem though, I'm hearing some creaking in it, which might be the spring needing some grease or wear. I should also say that I only heard the stem bottom out a couple of time on really big dips from ATV spinouts.

@@LessISMoreHealthy Good to hear how well the Meroca worked under those sorts of conditions. I have certainly been super impressed with it, but for obvious reasons I have avoided the sort of riding that would really test it. I can see how seat height might be an issue for you. I have the Venzo post right down on my old XC bike. My knew e-bike has a smaller frame and I now have a little room to play. You might want to consider the Kinekt over the Redshift, I suspect it would be better on gravel. I never considered the Suntour, but for it's price it sounds excellent, perhaps better than the Redshift. But the height is going to be an issue for all of them. Very annoying. I would strongly recommend looking at the Cycling About, RU-vid video for background if nothing else.

I'm planning on a new build for next year with a frame that better fits me. The bummer is that it will cost me a lot but I suspect it will be a bike that I ride for a good long time. The meroca impresses me a lot. It does so well on my normal riding conditions that I don't even realize it's there. There is occasional clicking from the spring but nothing bad at all. I do a fair amount of street riding, probably 60 % street to 40% gravel. Gravel is what I love, but my location requires more street. I've use the Zoom suspension seat post in the past, a cheapie version, and its pretty great. But definitely has a lot of squish. I'll check out Cycling About, I suspect I'm already a subscriber.
