The Barlow pattern, the sawdust covers, the copper accents throughout, the blade shapes and finish. It’s a phenomenal package. Thanks for sharing JB! Love that adorable little pen blade, lol. 👊🏻👊🏻🔥🔥
Again, very cool you’re now doing some reviews for SMKW! That’s my favorite knife stores. I head down there every year and get something. I’m not as much into traditional folders, but that one looked pretty cool.
Hawkbills make great pruning knives! Perfect for gardening and flower beds! They work pretty darn well on rope as well! For regular everyday carry I would choose a trapper over a hawkbill.
Very attractive series by RR, especially that Barlow! The copper bolsters and liners really do add to the look as you mentioned. Thanks for another excellent review JB!
You talk to the SMKW people, tell them if they want to knock it out of the park with the RR Barlows, bring one out in the Classic Carbon series and when this happens I get a free knife for the idea!
I have this Barlow and it's must be a hit or miss. I admit that It has a great bolsters with a great grip, very good fit and finish, pins are slighty moved up and you can feel it with a finger but it's not a problem. Springs are hard, very little blade play - nothing to cry about. The opening is rather strange because the main blade is behind a pen knife - not an easy task to open it without long fingernails. But there is something wrong with the blades. I had to regrind it and it's better now but still... I got a feeling it's very soft and untrusty. Can't say what is wrong but it wouldn't be my first choice. While simple whittling it bounces a little back. Very strange. I also have a RR sawbelly stockman and it's much better, but the sheepsfoot blade is sharp at its top (when closed) which hurts my hand while work. That's my only complaint. I love the look, I love the feeling of an old tradition but for simple edc work I just can't trust those blades. Maybe it's a matter of a single knives but they are very, very far from any SAK and my Medium Jack from Case (which have a worse fit and finish and I had to sharpen it becasue it was dull). The best knife is the one you can use. RR will be in my colection but not in the pocket - which is sad as they are a great looking traditional knives.
@@BigRedEDC I can't say it's an issue with the knife - it's just my "feeling". It may be that it's because the blades are thick and the grind isn't the best for me. Probably I will buy some other model and check if my "feeling" will change :) By the way - review is great, keep on going because there's always need for movies like yours!
You had me at the word "copper" then you said "Barlow "!! I'm a fan of this 1! Really dig the blade finish as well! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! And thanks to smkw for sending it to you for review!
Wow! That is a nice looking knife. What I have been doing is, getting one of each of the traditional knife types, but in different Series of Rough Ryder's. Smooth bone Canoe, Appaloosa trapper, glow in the dark lock blade work knife, etc. I don't have a Barlow yet & that one looks perfect.
I stopped into SMKW this week and picked up a Cherry Bone Cub and Green Micarta Trapper. Great little knives to carry around. Me being a budget knife guy, these are perfect for me. I think they are better quality than some of the other budget traditional knives I have.
I have become a big fan of this line. They get the job done, no frills. I have a similar Barlow and it is my most carried knife, and if I loose it in the hay field, I won't be too broken up about it.
The original name was Rough Ryder and was changed to Rider. About a year ago it was changed back to Ryder and is that's what it is now. The current official name is Rough Ryder.
