It’s been a rocky start on the road from Eureka California to Oregon. Trying to figure out if I have engine issues. That is making me wonder if a road trip is a good idea. Maybe I should turn back around.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

Hi Scott I woke up Thursday not feeling great. Later in the day I was cleaning up the place and next thing I know my whole body went numb and all I remember is my legs falling out from under me. When I woke up I was on the floor bloody knee , hurt my lower back, hit my head on something. Any way I layed on floor and got my bearings. Thank goodness I had my phone in my pocket I called 911 they took me to the ER and did a full work up dr said I was dehydrated and not eating right. I’m going rest get my strength back very scary I’m only 58. Any way great video glad to see you. Lee 😀

I just remembered that i had similar symptoms when mass air flow sensor became dirty. I just manually cleaned it and it worked perfectly.

Grants Pass is a wonderful place. Be sure to stop and say hello to the friendly people at the Dutch Bros coffee shop. I highly recommend the rest stop at Rogue River State Park a few miles south on I5; you can park for free outside the entrance: 42°24'43.01" N 123°07'45.64" W

Remember, you have to take care of yourself first always. I’m having to learn that lesson myself. I have always cared for everyone else first and now first time in my life I’ll come first. I never stop in Grants Pass. Never spend a dime there, not in gas , not in food. Can you imagine a place where people are so cruel that they outlaw sleeping if you dont have a home?

Go there and actually educate yourself 😂. Those bums are Examples of every bad choice they ever made. Ever got Boatnik? Doubt it. I do every year and it was nice without the bums and druggies. Go down there now and watch them getting high right in public. Don't be swayed by invisible people's videos. Ever notice he only does the homeless side and not the view of the majority of the citizens and business owners? Nobody wants another Portland situation. It's not tolerated in most of the state.

I'm from down under NZ and have enjoyed like everyone else seeing your part of the world and love listening to your soothing voice. Scott, you've missed your vocation in that you should have been on the radio. @elizabethhalberg7321 using a heavier oil has been shown to increase the problem with the variable valve timing system. And it will lead to engine failure

Just a suggestion for what its worth. That engine isn't going to get better...so....I would seriously think of selling it before it becomes unsellable. And at the same time look for a replacement. Unless the engine can be replaced. I'm sure you're contemplating your options. Its very unusual for me to find you in a current situation. In any event I wish you the best whatever you decide. I have heard more than one person say those engines are having issues yet I have seen many with higher miles running great. Scott needs to get it in to have it looked at by someone professional with the correct software to run the diagnostics. Low power doesn't mean the end of the line. He just needs someone to bring it back up to speed. It has low miles. It has a lot of life still to go. With good maintenance he should see 300k easy. It is a commercial rated van.

@@StaticCamperVan Yeah Scott.I know. But that engine is still in production and in multiple different vehicles in Chrysler's lineup. If they couldn't fix them they would discontinue them. I believe yours just needs TLC my friend. Don't give up on it. It can be fixed for sure. Talk with you family member about it. If it was terminal then you would have check engine lights. Loss of power could be something simple and it probably is. That recall was over a piston ring with a certain manufacture date. That issue got cleared. That's a great little van. Give it some love and a little $$.

@williamryan9195 actually Chrysler has never publicly stated the exact reason for the recall. The more reliable engine rebuild companies believe the problem lies with the variable valve timing system. I feel that we need to be clear on this fact as there are many people who are still interested in buying a ProMaster City.

@@StaticCamperVan I read the service bulletin. It was referencing VM engines 2018 and earlier for Long Block replacement. It wasn't a blanket problem across the entire 2.4 engine series. Some effected, some not by how the bulletin reads. I still have faith in those engines and think the Promaster city is a great little van including the Tigershark engine. Have you changed the PCV valve? Just curious.

Change the oil meticulously every 3000 miles, if the oil level is dropping, check the seals and head gasket; it is either a leak, or it is burning up oil, or both. If it is burning oil, switch to synthetic. Just a thought. I like your cooking style.

@@StaticCamperVan I wrote that after hearing you mentioned the engineering error, if oil levels are dropping either the engine was designed to run hotter than it should and burning oil, or there is a leak, those are the only two reasons why the fluid is disappearing; I believe synthetic oil will withstand the greater pressure temps of that design. Wishing you the best, it is encouraging to watch your adventure.

Over here in the UK Scott we have to re gap our sparkplugs when new so not sure about over there, but yeah sounds like the timing is way off so low on power up the hills but if it's a common fault on them its not good. Anyway great to see you buddy 🤟🚐

Scott you may want to check your spark plug wires. It happened to me once my car was loosing power and consumed way too much gas as normal. A mechanic friend of mine advised me to replace the spark plug wires and it took care of the problem after i changed it.

This may be a controversial suggestion, you may reject it outright, and maybe I might even be unintentionally offending you with the suggestion (for which I apologize if true), but I'm still gonna put it out there cause I know I can't be the only one thinking it: if you started a go fund me to address the van issues, whether it's the issues and a temp place to stay while the van is getting repaired, or outright buying a new one, we the viewers will pitch in for sure. I've been watching the channel for like two years now and I look forward to you new videos as much as I look forward to new episodes of tv series. And I've even taken advice from you with your kitchen equipment. If the van struggling uphill and its been burning oil, check that the catalytic converter is not blocked. Easy check is to disconnect the exhaust just before it and see if the power improves.

The dealership had to fit a new one for free. So the engine could meet the emissions requirements. Unfortunately the engine oil burn isn't bad enough to be given a new engine at the moment. This was mentioned on a recent video.

Maybe you could check in at Angels Auto werke in mt. Angel. It’s near Silverton. He put a new engine in the Chevy express box truck I bought. He’s currently doing my rear brakes and doing something with the differential.

That 2.4 L looks like the fiat engines they use in europe for those little hatchbacks. Insane that was put into a van!

Might be as easy as a fuel filter change, but some of these fuel filters can be difficult to swap. Of course it could be a million different things, but I usually try to think of the things that might be easy for me to repair myself. I'd be thinking fuel filter, fuel pump, stopped up air filter... simple things like that.

Im pretty sure that is a Fiat made (stellantis?) Engine. Their diesels are good but the gas engines are pretty bad

These engines were designed for the North American market but do share the same block. Unfortunately they didn’t offer the diesel engine or a manual transmission for these vans

Oh dear. ☹️ I'm sorry you weren't feeling well (I've lived in Humboldt most of my life and the allergies WILL flare up from time to time. Supposedly you can eat a teaspoon of raw local honey everyday to combat local allergens. I usually just take Xyzal at night for a few days when it's really bad. Also, so sorry about your van. A bit of a stressful time for you. Coffee helps. Looking forward to some resolution to the van issues. 🙏 Take care Scott!

Went through Oregon and Washington a week ago and my allergies were terrible . Maybe things bloom a bit later than in the PNW . Either way I’m glad I’m away from it now . My vote is head for the coast . It’s a win win . Less allergies and better for your van . 😊

You could try using high milage oil to condition the valve seals or an additive that will condition the valve seals to stop the oil burning problem.

Where is the fuel filter located. Plugging filter will show lack of power and make the motor ping some too, running lean.

Never idle the engine for long time also going for highmilage oil might help van perform better.

Well shoot! I hope both you and your van have a better day tomorrow. We're heading down to Palm Springs for some tests and it's going to be HOT! 100F down there. Urgh Oh well. Was beautiful here today and with a mild wind, I enjoyed the day = did some work on the back yard, finished weeding the front - as much as I'm going to anyway. I hope Oregon turns out to be a good choice for the next few weeks anyway.

Was struggling to get up from an awkward sitting position, and when you said about the ankle bracelet I was all a'tumble😂😂😂 My now-ex and I drove to California from Vancouver BC..... (Oh my God can it actually be almost 30 years)... Mostly I -5 and some on the ocean Highway. The place that suck in my memory the most was Grant's Pass, so beautiful and I found it atmospheric❤

Welcome to my back yard, and your right this area is beautiful, the Rogue River and the hills and mountains are always pretty year round. But as i saw you put lucas fuel additive into your tank and went to fred meyer for gas, i thought “oh no. Thats like a figure 8 back to the beginning” So lucas fuel additive as far as fuel additives go is very mediocre at best, and Fred Meyer is one of the worst gas stations in the world. My old camry used to get 23mpg when i used their Gas until i switched to chevren or shell, and then my car got back to 30mpg. What it means is that various gas stations put certain amount of additives in their fuel to make sure the fuel runs clean. You may hear words like Top Tier, and all that means is the bare minimim. So fred meyer hardly puts any additives in their fuel and you will see decreased fuel efficiency overtime, which may eventually lead to fuel injectors having problems. Personally even with the savings per gallon and the efficiency that you lose, you actually spend more money using Fred Meyer fuel than you do going to Chevron or Shell. I personally recommend trying to stick with one gas station, you go around a random gas stations, you are highly likely to gum up your injectors significantly faster. Shell and chevron has a higher concentration of additives that keeps the fuel running clean with less buildup. Theres some other gas stations out there who also do similar things, but if you see “top tier” just know that means the base minimum, and its not worth it. Hope you figure something out with your van, and enjoy your travels :)
