The skill level on display here just to stay upright is phenomenal. This has to be one of the most physically demanding sports. I'm shattered just watching.

Remarkable statistic quoted from GCN re WVA/MVP - in all but ONE cyclocross race they have BOTH participated - have either of them been outside first or second. This is going back more than 159+ races - I haven't fact checked but I can believe it!

You can see Van Der Poel does not have his full form yet. I also think courses with more running favor Wout Van Aert. Wout is clearly above everyone else level at this point. A bit surprised to see Pidcock in 8th but he tends to shine in climbing style courses.

How do they decide the grid positions for the start?

UCI CX ranking... Both Van Aert and Van der Poel don't do (almost) every race like other riders so they aren't in the top of this ranking and have to start further back

@@stickyschannel8497 Nope it isn't... They can pretty much pick which races they want to participate in... It usually depends on what fits best in their own schedule (of they're focussing on a certain championship or need some rest from the road season...) The GC's don't really matter to them...

@@stickyschannel8497 The CX Season starts in October if I’m correct, that means the road season is still on. Wout and Mathieu only ride these races to get a better start position for the Worlds (only important race in their book I bet). Or they ride the races to beat each other :)

A cyclocross bike is always faster on a cyclocross course. Cross bikes are faster than MTB on the road and high-speed surfaces. MTB suspension forks are not needed for cross. And cross bikes are designed to be carried on the shoulder. A cyclocross bike is essentially a road bike with better mud clearance and all-purpose tires for cross surfaces which includes road, sand, gravel, grass, mud, snow, and ice. A MTB is designed for long off-road trail riding, which long climbs & fast descents over rocks, dirt, tree branches, etc.

I'm not belgian nor do I have any experience with belgian names or the (dutch, french, german) languages, but why does he pronounce Toon Aerts as "Tonnet", is he supposed to do that? Is it a preference thing?

Nah, he pronounces it wrongly, he pronounces Aerts in English as Earths, which together with Toon becomes Toon Earts and almost sounds like Tonnet, his name should be pronounced as Toon Aarts. Ae is an old form of writing in Dutch that is the equivalent of a double A sound, which is pronounced as a long A.

Toon Aerts should be pronounced Tone Ahrts in English. I’ve lived in England for 27 years and I’ve given up on them pronouncing my surname right a long time ago. Been called worse 😂

Do you mean cyclocross? Road riders don’t usually dominate at xc. It’s xc and cx guys that are good on the road.

@@furiousfoggy CX riders destroy roadies? I don't see any CX riders destroying Pogacar and Roglic, and I don't see any CX riders winning in a flatout sprint. Top CX riders like MVDP and WVA are exceptional CX riders, but they don't destroy roadies.

A "real" cyclocross course where VDP has no chance at all against WVA, nothing to do with his back/injury, last time the difference in Dendermonde the gap was even bigger, it was around 2 minutes 30.

Because it's faster than riding the section and almost impossible to ride it without falling off the bike

As we know now, van der Poel still has trouble with his back and might even miss the Worldchampionships in the USA. No racing for VDP for a few week now.

My first time seeing what cyclocross actually is. I'm not a fan of artificial taped courses and I wonder if the mud is really necessary, but as more of a runner than a cyclist I am intrigued by the idea of choosing to run/carry your bike over certain sections, it looks fun and strategies must come into play too. I don't understand swapping bikes mid-race though, that seems dumb. Is it because mud clogs up the gear train? Surely it would add more to the race if you had to manage that yourself on one bike, it could change which sections you decide to carry the bike over instead of riding. I find this aspect of the sport really disappointing. Cheers for the video though I never understood what it was until now.
