I will never understand the hate Ian gets. Of course he's going to take a draw when losing, chess is still chess and it wouldn't be right for him to king-make by throwing a game he couldn't win. However he's clearly aware of what it means for Fabi since Fabi was only ever the one pressing, and is apologetic and processing that whilst still dealing with the fact he won't be back at the WC this year. Especially when there's not always a guarantee you get back (although I think he clearly deserves to be in the Candidates). An absolute class act, and just credit to both players.

The Candidates needs a review. If you look at the results table, the "winner" is not the person who plays the best against the best players, it's the player who plays the best against the lower rated players. The players at the bottom have the most power to influence the results - by either not playing as well (unintentionally) or giving up because they can't mathematically win any more. Don't get me wrong - Gukesh is a worthy winner. Neither Hikaru, Nepo or Fabi were able to win on demand - as you'd expect of a champion. But as Magnus said, the system needs to be reviewed. A round robin style in itself is not ideal when draws are more common than wins.
@vibovitold
@vibovitold 5 месяцев назад
So what else would you suggest, if not a round-robin? A knock-out format generates much more random results (remember FIDE "world champions" from the times when Kasparov had his own federation?). Back to interzonals and essentially a knock-out format, but consisting of a series of serious, full-length matches? Ai't nobody got time for that these days I'm afraid

Frankly I don't understand what Nepo has got against Alireza, in terms of the final outcome. Alireza scored 50% against Gukesh - quite unexpectedly - which is the exact same result as Fabi and Nepo achieved (only in their case it was two draws, while Alireza won and lost). He also had the exact same result against both Ian and Fabi (draw with white, loss with black), meaning his participation was of no relevance in terms of their relative scores. He performed the worst against Hikaru (losing both games), but once again it doesn't make a difference for either of them. So how did Alireza's (poor) performance affected them specifically?

most likely because fabi the one pressuring ian for most of the game, and they both needed a win to be able to tiebreak with gukesh. ian being the one being pressured the whole game realized he could throw the game to give fabi a chance to fight gukesh but didnt. so he feels bad that he still kept holding on eventhough a draw doesnt mean anything anymore at this point, because only if one of them win will they be able to catch up with gukesh
