Hey Pete! I was Blue this game. Sorry about your luck, but hitting that 3 was my best path to vision in Europe while maintaining my other positions. Also thought it wouldn’t hurt to weaken your position overall with you going right after me in the turn order, since I could potentially kill you later (if I got to Europe), or cleanup a failed kill if someone missed your Madagascar position that only Black & I knew about. Knew it was a risk, still not sure if the right move, but hopefully not full-on noobery. Good luck the rest of the tournament!

So much debate in these comments of what might have been the right plays but all I can think of is how no set on four is just fatal. Especially in a tournament where kills are worth points, people just can’t resist the urge to cross their fingers and click buttons attacking someone on five cards and hoping it works out.
@TheKillPeteStrategy

Oh yeah there's no debate. There's nothing I could have done differently here. I just lost to luck. That happens. There's a chance I don't know what I'm talking about. There's a chance people debating in YT comments don't either. Which do you suppose is more likely?

Yeah every single person except Pete having a set on 4 was absolutely terrible luck. Between that, getting a 3 stack hit early, and being in the first seat I don't really think you could have had worse luck. GG Pete the game had it out for you as much as your opponents on this one.

@papisalamander1056 10 месяцев назад
probably not because after blue got that 40 trade he was for sho done for
@TehJumpingJawa
@TehJumpingJawa 10 месяцев назад
@papisalamander1056 It wouldn't have been a 40 trade though, it would've been 35. Moreover the earlier trades would've been more advantageous for Pete too (assuming nobody else had skipped). Pete's 1st card trade would've given him -4+15=11 more troops. Blue's trades would've given him 8 fewer troops, and Purple 7 fewer. Blue popping Pete's 3-stack made him a target (even moreso than being in position 1), and demonstrated Blue was either: not very good and/or hunting Pete. I think at this point skipping a card to minimize the troop differential between Pete & Blue became the only way of avoiding the noob slam (either by Blue, or another player) Hindsight is ofc 20/20, but it's a path to at least consider in the future.

Hey Pete, I was red in this game! The second I saw you sit on 5 I started getting so nervous. Earlier, I saw blue aggro'ing you so I figured you were weakened, but I've had no visibility in Africa all game. Black not going for you made that 5 in Madagascar nearly invincible and because the rest of us noobs were all frantic, we accidentally worked together to give Blue the steamroll. I don't think anyone expected you to get so unlucky with the trades; it became very hectic fast. Regardless, GGs and thanks for the game!

This really makes me feel that these tournaments aren't *nearly* stringent enough about who qualifies. If there was an actual qualifying standard for something as prestigious as a World Championship tournament, this would eliminate the less capable people who try for a blind-luck kill in the early game despite only seeing a tiny fraction of a players troops. Real masters of a game don't make mistakes like that. You maximise your winning potential by minimising the luck factor. Purple sees 3 of Pete's positions, and decides he'll just roll the dice on whether Pete's troops are kill-guarded somewhere he can't see. That's not a world champion. And if the problem is a lack of competent players, there's nothing stopping the World Championships being a Round Robin-style tournament amongst a group of 20 or so players, or even a single multi-round series with the same 6 players. I think the prestige and skill level of such an event would still draw eyes, much like the Candidates or World Championship games in chess. But keep the noobs out. The fact that no-one besides Pete was even ranked GM in this game is an absolute sham. Edit: I would also like to point out the possibility that players like purple were not taking the game as seriously as a World Championship game should be taken, as if they were simply dismissing it as "inherently luck based, and therefore not worth stacking your hopes on". Again, that's not a World Championship mentality, and should be kept from these tournaments.
@sydvkwu9686

I also don't understand purple's thought process and i can't imagine him being a good player
@blackbird351
@blackbird351 10 месяцев назад
@@sydvkwu9686 I can certainly hypothesise purple's thought process. I'd guess he was trying to weigh up the odds of Pete having a kill-guarded territory, and rationalised it as being a low possibility. Basically, he hinged the entire game on the equivalent of rolling a 4v2. Now, when I say it like *that* , it obviously looks like a noob play. But to someone ranked master or below (or even an undeserving GM), the extra steps of calculation make it *seem* like a well thought out play that's worth the risk. But it's really not, especially with all the approximations going into that rough calculation.

Feel like the only way to do that is to make a buy in for the tourney. Make it so you have something to lose. Like everyone puts in $50 or $100. Then you will truly have the ones playing to win cause it means something. Plus you can have a prize pool/cash payout

This is only round 2, there will be some not-so-great players in the groups because nobody has been cut. The first few rounds of tourneys can be pretty lucky because of this, it’s unfortunate but it is just the way it is for these tourney formats. I like the format where each group plays 3 games and the winner of the game moves on, no points at all. It’s VERY difficult to play 3 games and have no chances to win, mitigates a lot of luck. But it would also be difficult to do a large tourney in 100% that format because of the vast amount of different, fun, and interesting settings you would need. Would also just like to say that FFA rank does not define how good a player is. There are many top 100 players that are not ranked GM bc they just don’t play ranked or don’t care about the rank.

Spoilers in my message below Unfortunate game for you no trade on 4 is a real bummer, although losing positions early on and the noob slams didn't help much either. I didn't do much better, although I had a trade on 3 I decided to not use it in the 5th position and ended up getting eliminated before my next turn. Ended up having 1 player kill someone and fail to run the 70, followed by another player also failing to run the 70. Ended up getting killed 2nd and that player also then failed to run the 70. Partially regretting not taking my trade on 3 so that I would survive at the end of the game for a few more points, but it's all a learning process. Love the content and appreciate you were unlucky in this game with starting position, turn order, and arguably not being able to trade on 4. You were clearly flustered right from the opening which affected your play throughout the game and 'nothing you can do about that game' is not a good way to grow as a player. You know yourself it's all about percentage plays, so consider that your play was not objectively 100%: - you could have taken Oceania portal 1st turn which was superior to Asia and kept a stack in Irkutsk or China - you could have skipped 1st turn - you could have skipped 4th turn - With your other positions, you could have taken Southern Europe (or possibly even northern Africa as a choke point position) instead of Ukraine - in these settings, your strat seems to be to take island territories to make it difficult to find/kill you, but this blocks your troops and makes it impossible to see large chunks of the map, while still leaving you HEAVILY exposed to kill lines from multiple players who only need to see one of your territories being slammed to know you are being killed. Having one island position is good, having them all imo seems bad. - You avoid choke point positions while appreciating that they are very strong at the same time (for example not being able to enter NA) - You did not move or change strat though you knew the calibre of players in this lobby was not world champ level, you can adapt your game to be appropriate for your opponents (in this case, having 1 or 2 less positions, (for example dropping the NA/Europe island) and having larger stacks (this is especially true since you had 0 vision on NA). You knew Purple (and possibly blue) was lining up to 'noob slam' you, and while his play was obviously not optimal you simply watched him do it for 2 turns. just some food for thought, better luck next game :)
@CheddahSlammer
@CheddahSlammer 10 месяцев назад
I completely disagree, -Not sure if taking the Oceania is better then taking the Asia portal later on. -people act like skipping isn't a risk that results in everyone else skipping and you being in the same position. If you can pull it off it works, but your really think higher ranked players wouldn't notice and just skip in turn? -Ukraine had the most vision in Europe, the other two point sacrifice vision. -That's the result of getting bad positioning. He had no way to get into North America just based on starting positions, so their was no way to see the whole map. Most of the islands were starting positions and spots were he needed to get an easy card on a 1 stack. -The choke point positions had large stacks, even blacks 3, usually if you attack a 3 you get retaliated against by who you hit. -Their is very little you can do against the noob slam, having larger stacks doesn't prevent them from slamming you and result in the next in the turn order getting the Feed, like we saw in this game. Lets say he consolidated his Europe and Asia positions for a very large stack. Purple still slams into the stack, maybe not destroying it, but then Red takes it out next turn but fails to see madagascar, and we end up in the same spot were Blue Wins. Personally this game is heavily luck based, especially on these settings and he got really screwed with positioning and First Turn order. Even if he got last in the turn order he could have done much better. However after he got a 3 stack destroyed by blue, and didn't have a set on 4, his game was screwed, as everyone sees him as an easy kill. Your advice is good if the players aren't also good, but everyone here was Master or higher.
@TheKillPeteStrategy
@TheKillPeteStrategy 10 месяцев назад
Card skipping in either scenario would have made me even more dead. Taking a bonus would have cost troops, painted a target on me (everyone knows where you are) and I would have been dead before I would have been able to earn enough troops to make up for the cost. Players of any skill level would have made the exact same error. It's correct to try and take a bounty on a player holding five cards. The only scenario where I wasn't dead would have been if a couple other players failed to trade in as well. This game is about as perfect of an example of a game where there was no strategic line to victory and the loss was certain because of card/turn order luck.
@obiwancoruscant1024
@obiwancoruscant1024 10 месяцев назад
I will echo the sentiment that there were missteps. Blue hitting your 3 in China was no surprise to me. Splitting those troops off when going to irkutsk to keep an extra position is fine in a high skill lobby, but this early in the tournament was not smart. I had to keep resisting the urge every turn to create additional positions that would be good moves against better opponents. Lower opponents see smaller stacks as weak, and it only takes 1 noob to get the bright idea to slam it, then everyone else can smell your blood in the water. So losing those troops painted a target on your back plus having 5 cards. If you don't lose those troops, and skipped a card, then you only have 4 the turn everyone was trading to kill you. Is it enough to save your game? Maybe not. But there are other moves as well. You were concerned with who was in Falkland Island and Congo when you already knew who was there from your spawn. You could have gone into NA from Venezuela after black didn't fortify central America turn 2 instead of prioritizing a portal that gives you access to only territories you could already see. Taking the yakutsk portal was definitely a bad move. Alternatively if you only want to hit a 1 taking east Africa would have given you vision to 3 new territory and access to the middle of the board where there were apparently a lot of 1s later on. I feel you played too defensive for not skipping a card being player 1. You needed to either see in NA to line up kills and not skip, or skip and have more troops and less cards for defense.
@TheKillPeteStrategy
@TheKillPeteStrategy 10 месяцев назад
I like the seven position play for these settings a lot. Sure I can't control the card luck, or the turn order luck or the fact that blue noob slammed my three. I suppose I would hope that someone as high profile as Mitch would know better than to throw in a tournament game. I don't really get anywhere by condescending to my oponents and assuming they're noobs Obi. Similar to why I don't card skip in a tournament. I'd rather be wrong than be the bad guy. @@obiwancoruscant1024

Well if you had a set on 4, we wouldn't even be discussing alternative play lines. Not having that is certainly a death sentence in tourneys. The only out you have is to kill someone to double trade but you weren't lined up for that, and that is still a long shot.

I think being in too many positions in fog of war is a bad strategy. You were in six/seven positions for most of the game, but you really should've tried to consolidate into three or four positions. Having many positions gives you a lot of information, but given that the other players are unlikely to see all of your positions, they'll underestimate your size, making you the likely first target to get slammed by whomever feels they can get the first kill. I believe this is why you got eliminated first. I believe that this risk vastly outweighs the benefits of the information gained from many positions. For next time, I'd recommend looking for more opportunities to consolidate troops into larger stacks. Anyone who sees a 10+ stack going into their turn probably isn't going to attack you, and anyone who discovers one in the process of trying to kill you will probably give up. Even if it's your last position, it would be difficult for an opportunist to steal the kill without a trade, giving you a chance to trade and come back. When four of your positions get destroyed and your last two are both small, the other players will finish the job, which again is what we saw here in this game.
@espygaming5101
@espygaming5101 10 месяцев назад
Eh. I think its a combination of what you speak of, and going first in turn order, AND his opponents not having as good a read on the positions and strength. For instance, this same play but last in turn order and he is chilling, or this same play and purple not blinding hoping to find all his positions when he only sees 3 because he was counting and knew Pete would have more positions. You saw Pete this whole game counting out territories he could see and adding them up to determine how likely that player was to have more positions. It is clear purple didn't do this at all, or nearly as well since he decided on the very low odds of going for the kill with little to know information. That said, I can promise Pete is far better at this game then either me or you, and we obviously have hindsight. He played a good game and got fairly unlucky in multiple ways, but as Pete says himself, some times that's just how the cookie crumbles.
@TheUnknownsShow
@TheUnknownsShow 10 месяцев назад
@espygaming5101 Very true. Purple not counting Pete's positions is my point. He didn't see all of Pete, and to him, what he doesn't see doesn't exist, so he assumes the few weak territories he sees are everything, encouraging him to slam Pete. Had several of those territories that Purple saw been consolidated into one large stack, I believe Purple would have been much less likely to attack Pete. Mitigating this risk of any other player being led to believe you're much weaker than you are by consolidating positions is what I believe to be the better strategy in fog of war than being too spread out and relatively weak in each one, as you're more likely to stay alive longer and are better able to capitalize on opportunities near your large stacks. Even if Pete survived longer in his many positions, it would have been difficult for him to take advantage of opportunities without a trade unless someone else messed up super hard.
@OuroBoros_Games
@OuroBoros_Games 10 месяцев назад
i think this game was a hard one to consolidate troops together for not saying impossible, he had very bad luck on it. Maybe giving up some territories would be good even if it is just to make move the people, but is was absolute not easy, and there was not safe play, and stacking probably would have not make difference to him.
@espygaming5101
@espygaming5101 10 месяцев назад
@@TheUnknownsShow I understood your point, but i think that is a problem of the tournament not having the highest caliber of players, not of Pete's play. Generally speaking you will ALWAYS be harder to kill in multiple positions, I understand your thought of "appearing" weak. Which is a true thought, but that is dependent on players making big mistakes, such as purple did. If he is in one or two positions he is a MUCH easier kill, especially with good players because they will count his positions and notice he is only in 2-3 and much more likely to have a viable line on him. He was SO difficult to kill from multiple positions that not only did 1 fail to kill him with a set, A second ALSO failed 1 turn later to kill him with a set. Now I agree appearing strong can be good, but say he was in 3 positions and purple had vision on all 3? he was still dead. Purple could only see 3 positions, meaning they went for the kill knowing very little, with less positions especially if purple could see them, they would only have MORE confidence to see if the kill is viable. For instance, if he is in one spot, and has a 33 stack, Purple should know that is his only position, because they can count the rounds and know he isn't on a bonus or anything. That 33 might be scary looking, but it also become, "oh, I can set and have a 46 stack. I absolutely can kill Pete right now"

The only thing being in less places would have accomplished in this case means instead of kill-feeding the person who went more my kill would have been more likely to be successful.

There's no real way to communicate with players to tell them they don't have you if they aren't able to count. The positioning I'm reasonably happy with. The card luck not so much.
@TVFILMBUFF

From watching your previous matches and learning to get better at risk... would you not agree that emoting the "oops"/"Goodgame" broadcasts you were on the ropes? 1st position is rough, but giving extra info might have incited more attacks. Blue saw the Venezuela and Siberia deaths and red saw the Europe loses... so they both knew you were low. But emoting it would have given both of them the courage to go for it thinking they had your last stack.
@Repleh
@Repleh 10 месяцев назад
The “Oops” was to signalize to the attacking player that they did not have all of his positions. Pete was trying to tell them not to hit his stack and not to feed. By the time that one or two of his stacks get hit it’s basically over regardless of what he does. The only chance he has was to emote the “Oops” and hope he wouldn’t get attacked in the first place. The fact that it’s a tournament (which generally has a higher standard of play) also impacts the calculus. In a public lobby I’d doubt that Pete does these signals.
@TVFILMBUFF

@@Repleh How often does emoting "oops" stop someone from continuing an attack vs. how often do people playing in fog chicken out of a kill if they don't think they have all the info and are not emboldened by emote desperation.

Maybe there's a good reason for this (I haven't played RISK with compounding trade-ins in a while), but why not skip your first trade in at 5 cards? Surely you won't die from missing those 4 troops (not even mentioning the fact that all other trade-ins in that turn will have less troops as well) while those 5 cards will massively increase in value for every trade-in that other people do. Just a thought. Nice vid!

Hey Pete, I surely can’t be the first one to tell you this, but I actually think the “kill” in your name and you saying it in your videos may hamper the growth of your channel. I believe it’s proven that the RU-vid algo picks up in that word and adjust recommendations accordingly. Just some food for thought,

I wish I died with bad luck in my game. My game the stars were aligned until I was fed. Was 4th in turn order. Had 7 positions on board with set on 4 in 2nd trade ins. Had perfect llines on player after me in 5th position. Top grandmaster on turn before me tried to kill me but only saw 5 positions so I was fed easily. Last place….

I think being an inactive unknown player was also part of problem. Grandmaster probably went for my kill thinking I’m low skilled and didn’t expect me to have so many positions.

I don't know that being known vs being less well known has as much of an effect on people going for your kills on these settings as some think it does. These settings would be much more skillfull without fog.

@XXX1NELSON1XXX

it wasnt unlucky position in my view. it was a few bad decisions from other players that costed him, and them the game. going for a kill like that when they were sure he had more troops hidden elsewere (or worse, they didnt even count the troops they could see) was just a coin toss they did. costing them, and others the game. AKA NOOBSLAM.

Pete has always being against skiping cards as for him is just a loss of time and a disrespect to the others players, if you skip a card the second may also skip a card to not be the first one to set, then the next skips a card, later the next and so on.

All my previous practice game on the last two positions didnt see me survive /game ended before me setting 2nd time so its quite annoying. I got a kill on the last player and i feel kindda bad about it bc it was just placement. In that game i even got my 7 stack on portal slammed by a bot bc we were missing a player.

He was emoting to try to manipulate the players not to kill him (by signalling he had more positions). Once a player sees one of Pete’s stacks get hit, it’s basically over as all players will hunt him for 5 cards. Emoting was the only possible way to survive.
