Watch the third quarter again and tell me anything is wrong: Minute mark listed for easy finding. 18.42 - Draper clear high contact ruck not paid. 18.35 - Danger dropping the ball free to Durham not paid. 12.45 - Draper arm chop not paid 11.30 - Perkins clearly being held not paid 11.23 - Stringer holding the ball free which even Ling chimes in and says “he doesn’t like it and what more could he do to try” 10.33 - Menzie rushed behind free 10.33- Durrsma was pushed in the back by Dempsey before Menzie ran it through 9.50 - Essendon free, Stewart picks it up, pauses, then handballs it away to the ground, should’ve been 50m and a shot at goal. 8.45 - Goldstein clearly held in ruck not paid. 7.50 - Ridley holding the ball tackled immediately, Danger got away with it 5-6 times. 6.45 - McKay obvious free, Geelong boot it away, even the commentators state it should be 50m. 5.00 - Bowes holding the ball to Durham 40m out, not paid. 4.50 - Henry kicks it straight out of bounds like Ridley does earlier, not paid. 4.30 - Durham clearly held by Stewart without ever taking the ball not paid. 3.35 - clear push in the back by De Koning in ruck not paid. 3.23 - Blicavs drops the ball with prior in Essendon’s F50, not paid. 3.10 - The clear holding the ball not paid against Stewart in Bombers 50 again not paid. 3.05 - Atkins picks up Stewart fumble, takes on tackle, also drops it, also not paid. 1.45 - As commentators state, throw by Atkins in Essendon’s 50 again. 1.19 - Caldwell held at Bombers F50 stoppage. Watch these moments and tell me these didn’t happen?….

Oh my God, you are so true,it was called deliberate once even when the Geelog player had a choice to pick it up, but he left it and it was called deliberate. Also, Geelong got a shot at goal when Ridley ran I behind and apparently it was deliberate. It definitely wasn't because he had players right behind him within 5 meters and he was pressured to run through. I was at that game and it made me extra annoyed.

Pretty simple really - Umpires x5 bad calls in a row in that 3rd Quarter led to Geelong going from 3 points down to 20+ points up in 15 mins and that led to the Bombers losing their bundle and giving up... (No excuse for them giving up, they have to be better than that)... but Brad Scott should call the Umpires out on a poor performance on their part... it ruined the integrity of the game..

When under pressure Essendon keep reverting into panic mode and bombing rushed big kicks into their forward 50 when the opposition defence is already set, which around 70% of the time results in a turn over. It has never been a winning strategy for Essendon (they did this throughout 2023), especially without key forwards who are great at contested marking. And thus Essendon get heavily scored against via rebounds from defence.

100% Whilest I agree the umpiring in the third term did not loose us the game, I submit it was a huge factor and a blight on the spectacle to be fair. Post a succession of bad calls we didn't regroup and Geelong took full advantage. That's our challenge as we grow to be the team we all know we can be. It's a wake up call for sure since up to this point we have been showing we can adjust and arrest momentum. Geelong were too polished and have been for a long time, that's why it feels familiar. The next few weeks will tell us a lot about where we are as a team. If memory serves last year after we got belted by the same team. We lost our way in the back end of 2023 and the beltings just kept coming.

In hindsight, we should have done the following: Perkins out - Hobbs in Draper/Goldy out Caddy in If Kelly wasn’t sick he should have played instead of Menzie I agree that we went in too tall & this hampered our ability to cover the ground and pressure when we didn’t have the ball. I agree with you that a really good team would have been able to overcome the 3rd quarter umpiring. We’re not there yet. But I’m not going to be too harsh on the players. I’ve never seen such a string of calls/non-calls go against a side. The only teams that would have been able to overcome it are the moment would be Sydney, Carlton, Collingwood and Brisbane. We are not at their calibre just yet. It’s a lesson that I hope the players will learn from & hopefully becomes a catalyst for us in the future. Again we were poor going inside 50, we didn’t play the conditions as well as we should have & I think we didn’t do enough without the ball. I’d like to know our pressure/pressure acts stats. Let us know what you think Felix!

In addition, we’re not capitalising on our own momentum. This again comes back to our forward entries and organisation of our forwards. I’m talking leading, running patterns etc to create space. Lastly, something that I haven’t noticed anyone mentioning is our defensive efforts around clearances/stoppages. Over the last few games this is something that has become a trend. Geelong manned up on our players, creating repeat stoppages more than we did. If we did clear the ball they forced us to have dirtier clearances.

Cause and Effect tells us all. Three things happened in sequence that gave us that outcome. 1) A horrendous period of umpiring during the 3rd quarter, 2) Essendon mentally disintegrated as a direct result of those poor decisions and 3) Geelong took full advantage of the Bomber mental collapse. Game over. Whilst you can never blame the poor umpiring it played a major part. Should it have impacted this way? NO. Essendon have been, and remain mentally weak. Until that is addressed they will never improve.

You can't say the umpires lost us the game because you'll never know if we would have won without those bad decisions. However, what you can say is that they made it really difficult for us to win. Yes the great teams can still get it done in the face of adversity, but we're not a great team. What happened in the third quarter was massively deflating for the players and was a huge momentum shift. They got ahead enough during that period that it was cause for the coaching staff to implement a more attacking style of football (Scott said it himself) and that always comes at a risk because it is at the expense of defense, and if it doesn't pay off, you leak goals. That just wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for that horrid period of umpiring and we would have been a genuine chance at taking the win. Perkins is soft, needs a spell in the AFL and needs to go on some kind of 'harden up' camp next pre season. If he played with half the ferocity of Durham or Caldwell he'd be elite. 3 Caldwell 2 Durham (didn't have many touches but he had big impact, showed guts and determination the whole game, and started to show off his aerial skills, the bloke has some kind of leap on him) 1 Martin Rp Guelfi

Merrett is clearly your best player and when you tag him and limit his impact, that hurts you quite a lot. Durham and Ridley are great but that’s not enough. Stringer is great at times but he’s the most inconsistent player in the sport right now. And to top it off, you have Nic Martin who is one of the best wingers/half forwards in the comp and Scott is wasting him at half-back. You guys are just a 9th/10th place side this year sadly, not enough talent or leadership.

While we are better then last year we realistically are not going to win a flag this year. I also noticed that the umpiring affected the momentum in the game and we were mentally strong enough as the cats who have been woeful out of the middle dominated in the second half and won lots of clearances.

Very good take from the game mate. Couldn't agree more. It doesn't matter if things go against you, the best teams don't capitulate. They find a way. I honestly thought we had taken steps in the right direction in this area in 2024 apart from the Port game, but once again..... Essendon prove they haven't changed. Same old Same old. We have to make realistic calls on players we love, but aren't going to take us to a premiership. I love Sam Draper, but he isn't a first string Ruckman. Why can't we just play Bryan with him..... I don't understand the Goldstein fixation when we are going to lose Nick Bryan because he wan't upportunity. Langford and Stringer are the same player. We should be playing Caddy in one of their places. Laverde gets exposed against big teams. 47 points from the back half means our fwd comp isn't right. We can't keep the ball in. Too many slow players. Menzie isn't AFL standard. Yes we were too tall in wet weather. We don't have contested markers. Not real known clunkers. I am worried about going half assed in to the finals. Thats just a recipe for another massive loss. Further meme's about not winning a final. More hurt for our supporters.

To be fair, it's two games when the players dropped their bundle: Port and Geelong. If they lose badly to Collingwood then that's a major concern to say the least. This is everything that North fans got tired of, Scott playing his favorites and not getting the balance right on match day. The most frustrating thing about Scott is he keeps harping on about what each players best position is. This is the time of year to be finetuning, not scratching his head. Time will shortly tell if he's any better than Rutten or not

@@Alby911 True. However, I feel like hes been the perfect fit for the club from a stability pov. Hes had average lists to prelims, so hes not bad. Also, we have to realise that line coaches have a lot to say in strategies too. Its not just the headcoach. Gia has a lot to do with tactics. From a personnel pov, I don't understand playing Goldstein over Bryan. We should be giving him EVERY game possible. He's happy to play Goldstein with Draper, but when Draper was injured went with just Goldy? Why.... something is up there. I look at a ruckman like Lloyd Meek who has come in for the Hawks and can have games like the one he had on the weekend, then look at Draper and go..... have we ever seen that? Where is his cap? I don't feel its very high. He's a burst player, hes not a consistent no1 ruck. We need to figure it out quick because we aren't even gonna make the 8 at this point. The top 14 is so close. We have to win 4 or 5 of our remaining games to make the 8 according to my ladder predictor I just did.

@@Drakenhax - It's frustrating seeing other clubs have such reliable ruckmen. Ours are either injured, aging or starved of opportunity. In the case of Bryan I think he'll be primed for next season, but should definitely be given more game time now, or else he's gone. That forward line is just a mess, there is no cohesion; no one leading or crashing into packs. Why would Scott leave out Caddy when our forwards are hot and cold lately? It made no sense to have Goldy Top 4 most likely out of reach and that percentage could kick the team out of the 8. Worst case scenario is we finish mid-tier and miss out on the best draftees.

Seems like every year we run out of steam and become a lethargic team around this time of the year; should some heat come on our high performance staff? We have I’d say no best 22 injuries to speak of outside of Parish. If you look at other young sides in the comp like Hawthorn and North, they’re actually playing much better footy compared to the start of the year. They don’t seem to be fatiguing so why should we?

I think our fwd line issues are directly linked to your in time in possession style of play. Its not how many entrys you have its how many quality entrys you have. We move the ball far too slow trying to play this time in possession game style. If the first entry is from a quick chain of linking play we score just as often as any other side. But when we play this slow methodical ball movement style the opposition floods back giving our fwds little space to lead into. Sure we are good at wining the ball back after it come out, so the stats look good ,1 billion inside 50s but it just gets bombed back in to a over crowded fwd line. If we had of moved the ball quick in the first place we would not be locking it in there. It would be back to the centre as we will have scored a goal. We had the exact same problem against the blues. On the flip side. If we move the quickly we will score more, but we then struggle on turnover to defend. Its a balance we cant get right and haven't got right for years.

I hate to call it but I doubt we will win another game this year. This is exactly how we went last year. Pathetic display after half time. We play Collingwood, Melbourne and Adelaide the next 3 games and will lose all these. Then St Kilda will be a 50/50. Freo next and we will lose. Gold Coast will be 50/50. Then Sydney and Brisbane to finish with 2 losses. Roll on 2025!! Edit: Forgot my votes. 3: Calders 2: Durham 1: Laverde I gave Laverde a vote as he got absolutely smashed in a defensive contest and yet he stayed out there and ran his guts out.

I can't with this team anymore. I am so sick of having hopes every year only for them to be stomped on every time. Yes the umpiring was atrocious in the 3rd quarter and yes it did contribute to the momentum shift and gave Geelong a match winning lead at 3QT time that they did not deserve. But Essendon had something like 17 to 5 inside 50s in the 2nd quarter at around the 20 minute mark and were still losing the quarter at that point by a goal. Essendon have the 5th worst percentage in the league despite the fact that we have played the bottom 6 sides 7 times already. We have had the absolute easiest draw imaginable and we still can't convincingly win a game. Brad Scott has the worst team selection in the league, I wonder if he isn't secretly undermining us from the inside and as ridiculous as that sounds how else do you explain playing 2 rucks, 3 tall forwards, a 195cm wingman and a 200cm sub on a night we knew days in advance was going to bucket down with rain? An under 10's kid can tell you going tall in that weather is as good as giving the game away. Nothing has changed at Essendon, we are still the joke of the competition, the club has accepted its role as the middle of the pack easy beats and will forever finish 8th to 13th on the ladder. I know people will half read this and just think f*ck off then, and I will. I've given my money away to this club in memberships for over a decade and we have never changed. We've seen 3 laughing stock clubs in Richmond, Melbourne and Carlton turn it around in that very same time period and what have we done? Finished 8th a handful of times only to get embarrassed in week one of September every time. Well f*ck this club, f*ck Brad Scott, f*ck the board. I am done.

@zingleraster9124 compare the importance of the players and their role. Andy is responsible for many exits out of defensive 50. And also among the handful in the last wall when we press. Errors his role usually end up to punishment on the scoreboard.

I will never understand why you'd draft an undersized midfielder, only to throw him in the backline when ball use needs to be at its premium. McCluggage and Taranto had so much more upside and it's clearly showing now

Even if the 3rd quarter counts, we do need to put away teams early. It happens each week. I can name games against Carlton, West Coast, Gold Coast, and the Cats. Seeing a lot of games live this year we cannot finish off teams. We should've been up a good 30/40 points by halftime. There's one game where we did this on ANZAC day and still couldn't punish the pies further. I think its time we develop our up coming players and invest in our forward stocks. Langford has been extremely disappointing this year to make me honestly feel he should be playing the Harry Jones role on the wing. Wright should be replaced by Caddy and Gresh / Guelfi don't really damage the scoreboard. Would've really loved a Bobby Hill player but we're a small forward away from actually making an impact on the scoreboard

There's no point analysing this game - close game between two teams that were evenly matched which was destroyed by umpiring. Your video is a poor take. Football is a game of momentum and the third quarter destroyed ours.

No we weren’t at all to be honest if you get football. We were well on top the entire first half, we had them on the back foot, we let ourselves down and allowed them to stay too close by giving up an occasional goal and not capitalising enough when we had it. However, the third quarter we were still competing well, 3 seperate decisions resulted in 3 potential 12pt swings, AND the obviously incorrect 5pt bonus they got from Menzie rushing the behind. Draper free, should have been +6, ended up -6. Bowes and Stewart clear holding the ball decisions both 45-50m out, both ended up play on and going to Geelong goals, when both (close to max range, but likely both frees if correctly paid would’ve been a shot on goal) could’ve been Bomber goals. That is potentially 41 pts difference in the margin on four bad decisions. Imagine hitting 3/4 time leading by 20 instead of down by 21?…. Geelong have not won a single game this year when behind at 3/4 time. They’ve won 9/10 of the games they were leading, the only one they lost was when leading at 3/4 time by just 4pts. Last quarter wasn’t our best by any stretch, and it was disappointing to give up an early goal, but when you’re busying your ass, having opportunities robbed, and the other team gifted charity, it’s ridiculously hard to keep the same motivation level and energy when you know you’re being screwed over. We need to work on the mid to forward connection and create more goals when we keep winning the inside 50s etc, but reality is, if not for those 3/4 decisions, it’s highly likely Essendon goes on to win that game.
