Round tag K5LAs are very underrated. 2001 K5LA with a 29K serial.

This is one of my favorite pieces in the collection. It is a 2001, 29K K5LA (round tag). In mine and others opinions, these earlier round tags are known to slay real hard. This one has big bore 5 tendencies at times. This clip is the day before the Altoona 2022 horn honk. A few friends and I blew horns on the back side of the curve in the middle of nowhere to make sure we didn’t disturb anyone. There’s little to no traffic so I can pretty much go back and forth all day which is what we did. Weather conditions were cold and windy but the mountains provided us protection. Temp was around 35-40 degrees with winds around 10 mph. Audio recorded by Jack. Lousy video editing done by myself as usual. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Awesome K5LA! I love any good sounding NF K5LA that's pre mid 2000s.

The tuning changed in the 30-40K time period. I stopped enjoying their sound around that time. But ya can’t beat the older stuff! Hard to believe this horn is already 21 years old!

Imo, they all kinda sound alike, just with different designations. Well, maybe not including the raised letter. I like the K5's in which the number 4 bell is flat. Gives it that unique NS-esque sound

Each era of K horns have there own distinct sound color and timbre. It isn't easy to analyze unless you have a trained ear & wide musical pallet.

@@AirchimeLTDproductions174 Despite the names, and every era of horn, I assume they're all supposed to sound the same. I think it really just depends on how long each bell is constructed to play a designated note. Combine that with the amount of time it's spent in service and how it's worn down over time, and the note might sharpen or flatten. I guess that's why most NS units like say 9936, 9454, 9502 or 9917 sound discordant as some presume, but I think they sound unique as it's what I grew up around and they sound the most nostalgic imo, as apposed to a fully restored K5LA that may sound nostalgic to a real horn enthusiast. Maybe that's where I get it confused

LOUD AND GORGEOUS K5LA, That’s for sure! I especially love the sound of these round tags when the bells are facing the other way like at 0:57. And did this come off of a P42DC or any GE Genesis locomotive? Because it definitely sounds like it could!

It came off an NJT electric locomotive after it failed.

What a Beautiful horn! I have one question, where do you buy those train horns? I've been trying to get my hands on one for years and I'm not sure where exactly to buy them from collectors.
@bigborek5la

Thank you! I buy them from various places! Scrappers, Railroads, other collectors, eBay etc. This particular one was purchased during the very beginning of Covid in NJ from a conductor on some railroad out there.

And this is why I've still been on the fence about the 2 stage button valve or Graham white valve because the the Graham white sounds so much better how you can actually play pretty much every note. And I already own one so it would make more sense to use it, 3 stage I wanna say it is.
@bigborek5la
@bigborek5la 2 года назад
I’m a manual valve kinda guy. I use two-Stage viloco AW206 valve which is easier to modulate and voice each bell compared to a Graham white. I do have solenoids that I’m currently building for horns that need that heavy hit of which a solenoid can only provide.

Early raised letters were more in tune. Especially the 1 and 5 bell, which didn't warble much.

hey this is fantastic! Could you please explain the different between a round and square tag K5LA?
@bigborek5la
@bigborek5la 2 года назад
Round tags (round edged tags) are newer production horns which started somewhere in the 16K range serial and are still running in production to this day. Square tags (square edges) were in production from mid to late 95- 1996/7 with serials starting at 10000 and going up into the early 16Ks. They are the first tagged horns since the Nathan big tags aside from The Canadian IEC Holden company which did contract work for Airchime.

@bigborek5la
@bigborek5la 2 года назад
@@AshtonGraham280 the ones on the Amtrak P32s are horribly fouled by their horn heater back caps which heat up the internals of the horns in the winter time to prevent freezing and horn failure. They force the horn horribly out of machine tolerances fouling them out quick. The metro north ones are much better sounding.

Look up a video of Hocking valley scenic Railway 701. That engine has a K5LA in the arrangement you seek and is made the same year as this horn which would make it nearly identical.
