It's hard to imagine another yacht race that challenges the Island Sailing Club's Round the Island Race for thrills, spills and sheer numbers. As the huge turnout circumnavigates England's Isle of Wight in high summer, there may be another somewhere, but if there is, I haven't heard about it. In this short video, I describe the race and reminisce about one or two memorable incidents…
#RTIR, #RoundtheIslandRace, #Sailing, #yachting. #yacht racing, #TomCunliffe

What a great way to get motivated to head out the the old boatyard...much more effective than the first cup of coffee Tom. Greetings from the Chesapeake . Thanks for all you do

Sailed it in 1977 and enjoyed it immensely. That year we ( crew! ) won the Cruiser Division of the Solent Points Series in a Hustler 35 called Perdix. Oh happy days!! Also the year we got married.............

Thanks, enjoyed! Did the Round Island back in ‘84 and ‘85…..had a blast! Then a visit back to Cowes race weekend in 2014….a few pints in my old local, The Anchor (I was living on my Rival 34 at G&G marina over the winter). Great memories! Thx, Andrew

Grand to hear a mention of G&G. Groves and Gutteridge. None of the new names that have arisen since comes close. Must have got lively in there with a stiff northerly blowing the snow across from Pompey!

@@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns there were three of us, my Rival, a Fisher 37 and a Taiwan type ketch, tucked right up behind the marina seawall. Aside from snow on the dock and deck….it was a quick run across the parking lot to the Anchor!

It is indeed a great race! I took part in 1999 sponsored by Hoya.Three crew plus professional local skipper , in an open 23ft Sonar Class dinghy .We were all dinghy sailors so took it in turns to helm.Started at 0800hrs and crossed finish line at 2000hrs.During that 12 hrs we had all possible weather conditions apart from snow..not surprising as was in June. We did really well as a scratch crew finishing 4th in class!!.Thoroughly recommend doing this race !😊

We witnessed this serendipitously in 1994. Magnificent sight and as we toured around the island we had sail boats off out right all the way around! Very very cool

Hi Tom from NZ! Just interested in why your old Pilot cutter was "leaking like a basket"? Was it because she hadn't finished taking up in your (understandable... haha) haste to get out on the course? Thank you for all the great stories over the years both here and in Classic Boat keeping the tradition all things maritime well and truly alive. Hope you make it down here one day. Kindest regards, Andrew.

We are not going to succumb to become obsessed by the Varvassi boiler. However before every Round the Island Race I think it is the Island Sailing Club who give warnings about the danger and advise in detail about the line to clear whose existence you correctly point out. From memory, in the sixties, a discussion developed as to how to get rid of the obstruction. It was deemed dangerous to use explosives so the matter was not pursued any further. This was at the time that Trinity House removed the wreck bouy or at least shortly after. But there have been huge advances made in underwater technologies since then. One wonders why the discussion is not revived with a view to a solution being found. Removal of the damned boiler would constitute a huge relief not only to participants in the race but also to sailors approaching the Solent from the west mindful of the nuisance.

Ha ha reminds me of the time doing a similar race around Sheppey, Kent in a Wayfarer, 3 crew and 2 slabs of lager. Surprising how far out you have to go to get enough depth of water. Inevitably what goes in must come out and standing at the back having a call of nature in front of all the other boats, such fun.🤣🤣🤣

When I am out sailing. I flat sailor I discovered long ago that I didn’t need to heel so much to keep a good turn of speed.
@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns
@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns Год назад
Quite right with a flat-floored modern yacht, but it does depend to some extent on the boat. Try sailing a ballast-led racer from the 1930s flat in force 4 and you'll be last in the fleet!

@@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns I ventured into the racing scene back in the late 70’s. Never was able to get that racing fever. Was never that competitive. Even when I learned to box. I never took pleasure in defeating an opponent.

@albertlabos8400 Год назад
Yes Tom, indeed. We all know about the clearing marks you mention to avoid the boiler of the wreck of the Varvassi. But every year without fail at least one boat becomes a cropper on Round the Island because of the damned boiler. Isn't it about time that the danger be cleared once and for all ?. I remember when the wreck was marked by a wreck bouy which was a help, but not nowadays.
@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns
@TomCunliffeYachtsandYarns Год назад
I remember one year that the buoy drifted off-station Albert. It caused chaos. Actually, I don't think 'we all' do know about the clearing line, or there wouldn't be so many crunches! Maybe it's down to individual skippers to take suitable navigational decisions and stay safe? I know better than most that it isn't easy in the heat of battle, but you can't change the facts. Hard to know what to do really...
