Roundabouts Driving Lesson - When can I go at a roundabout?

On a recent trip to the UK from Canada, I hired a car for nearly 3 weeks. The night before I picked up the car, I watched this video. We have a few roundabouts but nearly as many as you do. This was a real life saver. The issues I did have were that UK drivers don't always follow the rules ( but that's sort of universal ) and when the entry lanes are marked on the road, they are often marked too late and often obscured by other vehicles. Many thanks for making the time to post these videos.

Thanks for this video - it's something that even as a new driver I find really hard. I think there is a real market for a video/dvd full of these clips where you have to decide whether or not you can go. I have been looking for something like this to build my confidence

So, here it is 6 years after making my comment below. We still talk about the night, still jet lagged, I was awake watching this video. I am much more observant now in Canada ( where I live ) and in the U.S. where I often travel. We have far more roundabouts / traffic circles here now. It's like the new thing to do. Oddly though, we seem to build them to slow traffic down whereas you build them to keep it flowing. And, as far as I can tell, there has be absolutely zero public education on the rules for roundabouts. One unwritten rule that I learned after now having made two more driving trips throughout the UK... try to never enter a roundabout with two or more lanes in such a way that you end up just ahead of or beside another vehicle. That vehicle is most likely going to be exiting that roundabout shortly and you are just going to be in the way. Not always the case, but a safe bet.

Don't worry he's the best instructor in my area, 44 lessons with him and this is the only thing I find hard. Yeah I will need to really ask for more help maybe give me an hour of practice and some reference points.

Hi this video is very useful, however do you have any advice in dealing with very busy roundabouts when many drivers are going around in the wrong lane and fast? as this is why I failed my driving test

I was told by my driving instructor to always be on my brakes when on a runabout - i get so confused and panicky does a full stop in the middle of traffic (runabout) should i be on my gas when driving around a runabout ..?? Thanks.

Hi, I really hope you can help. My instructor has told me to book my test however, the one thing I cannot perform is parking next to the kerb.(pull up next to the kerb). The reason I can't do it is because my instructor hasn't gave me any reference points. All he says is make sure your car is parallel to the car in front and then look at the left mirror and make a slight turn to the left then straighten up. Is there any tips you can give me as I always hit the kerb or park way off. Thanks.

My driving instructor pressures me to go when I'm not ready. I'm not getting a feel for the traffic already on the roundabout so I'm not developing a natural understanding. Is it really a problem to always stop at the lines, then observe the traffic until truly ready to go? I still get confused about when I should be in the right lane and signalling right. Is it for any exit after the second? 41 hours now and still struggling, but I plan to take a week off after tomorrow and digest lots of info.

just a wee point here,, on moving onto a roundabout when the car already on it is kind of in your way, but will have moved on by the time you get there,,, what if that car has to stop,ie, his exit blocked, then you'll find your self in a horrible position with all the other traffic on your right bearing down on you, better to just wait until you get a decent break in the traffic flow, especially as a learner.

My test is next week and I sort of struggle with roundabouts because I seem to hesitate and stop but I just don't like moving into the roundabout if im not completely sure. Can this cause you to fail your driving test?

Good idea for a video. Park a camera on a roundabout and comment on what is happening. Like it. Unfortunately, in Northants, many drivers stick in the left hand lane to turn right, so perhaps a little section on looking for stupid drivers, but overall a nice video. Luck

it's not rocket science get in the lane you need to be in then move off when there is a gap, first things i had to learn on my 1st lessons wash a mini roundabout and a roundabout, just be patient though
