A Russian wife turned to her husband and asked, "What's this special military operation our glorious leader keeps talking about?" Her husband replied, "It's a war to stop America and NATO." "Oh, right” she says “How's it going?" “Well” he replied “so far we have lost over 20 generals, 100,000 troops killed, countless injured, 3000 tanks, 300 aircraft, hundreds of helicopters, countless armoured vehicles, artillery and trucks, our flagship along with other naval ships, our army is being defeated in most areas and we have had to resort to conscripting 500,000 Russians including murders and rapists to replace our losses”. “Wow” replied the wife “what about America and NATO”? “They haven’t turned up yet”

Just imagine if the Russian airforce didnt bomb schools, theaters and hospitals during the first 2 weeks of this war but some railroad junctions and highway bridges leading from the west to Ukraine. All that vital supplies being delayed for a couple of days could have made the difference. But russia needs to do russia things. Sadly and yet luckily.

@@martinwinther6013 no but there is a real lack of understanding how the rail system is holding the nation together. Trains and tracks are repaired within days of bombings there have been a number of workers killed (400+) while performing their work. Even bombing railway stations these non military workers have done an excellent job. With whom Ukraine could not have accomplished what they have so far. Ukraine cannot defeat Russia now, but victory by 2025 is possible with increased Western support, according to retired British General Richard Barrons, who previously commanded the Kingdom's Joint Forces. "The current Ukrainian counter-offensive will not dislodge Russia - although no one expected it. It is also unlikely to halve the area of occupation before the onset of winter, which could be one of the most optimistic goals," Barrons writes in a column for the Financial Times. He calls the progress of the AFU in the south "modest" and writes that it is about eight miles (12 kilometers). Before reaching the sea, there was still 55 miles (88 kilometers) left to go through three lines of defense (here, probably, the general indicated the path in a straight line to the nearest point on the Sea of Azov).

@@johnwebster5005 i dunno man. the casualty rates seem horrendous and it took most of a year to build the current force. how quick you think countries are going to be to keep upping the ante when stockpiles are pretty much gone already? ammunition production expansion wont even match what ukraine is using now and that wont see fruition for a long time either. f16's are likely to never arrive and even if they did would have so much weight on them now that ukraines out of ammo for its soviet air defense systems that how is ukraine going to keep going? and ukraine better pray that all this talk of hundreds of thousands of russian reserves coming into play in the coming weeks is bogus...

I’m pro Ukraine, and strongly support the cause, but I do feel like most of the analysis from The Times Radio has been more akin to propaganda, after listening to it all daily since the start. Not saying this particular analysis isn’t accurate, in fact it sounds like one of the better ones, but the headline reminded me I wanted to make this point.. Again, I’m pro Ukraine, I’d just encourage the editors to think about just how often they’ve set up interviews that orient around the strength of Ukraine and/or the weakness of Russia. In fact has there ever been anything else here? A little more nuance perhaps?

No, he doesn't say anything that an experienced company grade or decent field grade officer couldn't tell you is common knowledge, common sense, or the prevailing wisdom. He is, in the time available, without using jargon or devolving into historical cliches and hyperbolic language, as so many military men of a certain age (particularly British military men) are wont to do, make understood to the layman the broader strokes of a complex situation. Think about it. How are you qualified to judge his expertise in logistics and strategy? But he sure made you feel like an expert, even for a moment. The one thing he claims is probably not so correct, which is that the F-16s will be a game changer. Any of the knowledgeable military experts who specialize in air combat are warning against believing that they will be the golden ticket to Ukrainian victory. Several factors at play, first being it is highly contested airspace bristling with MANPADs and SAM systems, not to mention hostile aircraft so it is still a very high-risk environment. Also, the F-16 requires a well maintained runway as the air scoop is below the fuselage which means that rough runways that some aircraft can accommodate are not possible with the F-16, and the runways *must* be kept clean or the engine will Hoover up debris and be destroyed. The airfields where those will potentially be stationed will already have targeting information loaded into Russian missiles. I’m very happy that Ukraine will be equipped with them, but they won’t break things open, their main role will be to provide good support for ground forces, with occasional long range strikes at very high value targets when the risk/reward is favourable. I recommend watching the Ward Carrol channel, especially his interviews with Justin Bronk who is an internationally renowned expert on modern warfare and weapons systems, the clarity and sobriety of his evaluations are really well worth spending time listening to. I'm sure some enterprising Ukrainian entrepreneurs will start building factories to first mod existing drones for military use, and then eventually start designing and mass manufacturing drone fleets to equip the Ukrainian Army and sell to NATO allies. It had occurred to me that they could do that, but nobody was talking about it, so I thought maybe I just didn't know what I was talking about. Which I don't, but it's nice to know I guessed right. That combined with the fact that they have also been cutting those cluster rounds apart and extracting the bomblets to use with quadcopters is very encouraging. Those munitions are banned in many nations for a reason, so it's a very good thing that Ukraine is getting some alternate uses out of them besides their primary function for which they have received bans.

I don't think F-16 will be the game changer some wish them to be. It's a very, very good jet, but it doesn't have stealth capability and that will limit to a degree. For example, you wouldn't want to get too close to Russia's air defences, cos they'll detect the jet easily. After that war is over Ukraine needs to work out a way to buy some F-35s.

Really great podcast. No one talks about making tanks and other armoured vehicles mine proof when it comes to western equipment, or their Russian counterparts. The Indian defence industry claims to have made mine proof armoured vehicles. Is it possible for any armoured vehicle to survive Russian mine blasts like the ones in Ukraine? What is the limit of intensity of the blasts of these mines? Can there be really huge mines that can't be detected easily by the human eye? Can armoured vehicles be made mine proof against the most powerful mines? How do the tracks of armoured vehicles react to mine blasts? Considering that minefields are a given in areas where there is military conflict, why do US armoured vehicles have wheels with rubber compound tyres instead of tracked vehicles? If tanks can have armour that have evolved progressively to withstand different types of destructive anti armour ordinances, why have the tracks of armoured vehicles not evolved on similar lines? On the matter of the ammunition that tanks fire, there doesn't seem to have been any evolution on their effectiveness over many decades.

An excellent interview which underlined the critical importance of logistics and how Ukraine has excelled in this field and how the opposite has become a nightmare for the Russian military. In addition, it should also be noted that the Ukrainian military has had significant successes due to its excellent use of highly trained NCOs (especially Sargents) on the front lines who are able to make important decisions on the spur of the moment without constantly deferring to Officers who may not be available when an immediate decision must be made. As for the Russians, more often than not, the opposite has been true which in conjunction through the constant abuse of alcohol and lack of effective leadership, has rendered the Russian military to be no match to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
