Fort protected Wiscasset not Bangor which is far away. Wiscasset was the fishing center, it's said you could cross the river stepping on boats. Red's has the longest food line in ME. Stop in Searsport, capital of flee markets. Damariscotta for oysters.
Jonathon I must disagree. I'm from MidCoast Maine (Rockland) and that fort is a helluva lot closer to Bangor than Wiscasset. Wiscasset is roughly 30-35 miles south of Rockland and Bangor is roughly 60-65 miles north of Rockland. As a young man I lived not far from and have toured the mansion of the man this fort was named after.
@@nickyleblanc4200 which fort? this was a while ago, maybe a different fort, Fort Edgecomb defends Wiscasset although only used to enforce Jefferson's unpopular port embargo. Wiscasset in Abanaki means "coming out from the harbor but you don't see where." from wiki. Doesn't rt 99 avoid Rockland on the way up?
@@jonathanwobesky9507 Going by the video and Fort Knox being mentioned I thought you were disputing the location of Fort Knox on the Penobscot river. It has been a long time since I travelled Rte. 1 in Maine (retired USAF in Delaware and all my coastal kin are deceased) but I believe 99 eventually becomes Rte. 1 around Kennebunk and then Rte.1 continues up the coast.
