Before the Route 66 series started, we took a poll to get feedback on the most interesting "roadside attractions" along the Mother Road. To our surprise, the 72-oz steak challenge at the Big Texan in Amarillo Texas ranked #1. Perhaps because the KYD community knew that the table would be set for laughter ... and it was!
Knowing this challenge would happen, Marc & Caleb did their homework and created a plan to dominate a combined 144 ounces. Months before the challenge, confidence was high. But the mood just days before arriving in Amarillo was another story!
Eating 4.5 pounds of beef is not the only thing to do in Amarillo (thank goodness). We also visited the Jack Sisemore RV Museum. This is a stop that has been recommended for years, but traveling along RT66 was the perfect time to visit. The next time you're traveling through west Texas-which for RVers can be quite often-stop by to check it out. It's free and the collection is worth a look.
Then we made our way to the halfway point of RT66 in Adrian, TX. It's a small town, but as Trish said, bringing your own fun is an essential ingredient when it comes to traveling the Mother Road (or anywhere, for that matter!).

I hate to tell you this, but about 4 months ago on You Tube I saw a girl maybe early 30’s and the size of your Mrs. eat 2 of those Big Texans 72oz steaks and all the fixin’s in the time allowed for 1. I was amazed. She was a professional eater of some type and enters a ton of those eating contests all over the country. I have driven by the Big Texan a few times in my travels and always wanted to go eat there, but I would never attempted the challenge. Yes I am a chicken. You guys are brave men. At least you have enough leftovers for the rest of your trip down Route 66.

Amarillo is a great gem. I miss it daily! Grew up there, but married and moved. Check out the Harrington Museum also with the Helium Monument. Sunsets are the best.

We stayed at the Amarillo KOA on our way to Grand Canyon last June. My family loved it when the Cadillac picked us up to go to dinner. We DID NOT attempt the steak challenge! I enjoyed seeing you give it your best!!

Trish PLEASE READ THIS ABOUT DRY SHAMPOO RECALL. I know you use dry shampoo and in an article by Eat This, Not That titled "7 New recalls at Costco, Trader Joe's and More Supermarkets" there is BIG recall on over 30 dry shampoos that contains benzene. THROW THEM AWAY!! Be safe and God bless

FYI Mark, letting a car battery die so many times shortens its life considerably. When we had a Class A and tow vehicle, I installed a toggle switch to isolate the car electrical system from the battery. This way the steering wheel is unlocked for towing safely but the battery is again isolated from the car electrical system and not draining the battery.......easy peesy and Mr. Google will show you how......GL

The Big Texan steaks are fabulous. I just stuck with the normal size. It’s been a several year since I passed through there. I stayed at a KOA campground and the restaurant would come and pick you up in an old Cadillac with big steer horns on the front grill if you needed a ride.

We live in East Texas and while on a trip with our Shriners we witnessed a young skinny guy from Oklahoma eat the whole meal. He said it was his 7th time to complete it. We used a battery disconnect on our Jeep while towing. Worked great.

I've seen a lot of big guys thinking they can finish that steak......NOT! There is a little petite gal from Bellevue, Ne who not only finished it and everything on her plate in about 16 min, she then ordered another one and finished 3/4 of that! She left those guys sitting in the dust!! Now THAT was funny! And so is this! 😂

I just have to let you know that your detour off Route 66 before OKC kept you from visiting the artist and gallery that your travel guide was produced from! That would be Jerry McClanahan in Chandler,OK. That’s where we live too and he’s a friend of ours. You missed about a half dozen really fun other things too jumping off route! Next time!!!

We've stayed at the big Texan rv park 4 times in 2 trips out west, with the limo's parked there. A little quirky but clean, good people, convenient, surprisingly quiet. You have to be careful picking RV parks in Amarillo, they are all next to either the rail yard, airport, feedlot, or I40

Wow, what fun! This brings back SO many memories of my time in Amarillo in the 80s. After a night on the town, my crazy friend talked me into footing the bill for his attempt on the 72 oz steak at the Big Texan. Of course he couldn’t finish it, and I paid. Also many memories of long-hauling I-40, paralleling Route 66 in the big truck. Many thanks for the ride-along. Happy Trails

I recall driving my non RV vehicle down I-40 from Oklahoma City on the way to Santa Fe, NM and seeing that sign in Amarillo. For one moment I considered attempting to inhale those SIX POUNDS of steak for free- but then I looked at the map and saw very few rest stops or gas stations from Amarillo to the New Mexico border and didn't want to chance having nowhere near to answer nature's call when it wouldn't have taken 'no' or 'WAIT' for an answer! You RVers are SO lucky you get to take your plumbing WITH you! Good job, Caleb! Nice try, Marc. Great job showing us Route 66 highlights! Thanks!

Hearing you talk about an old wooden Maharaja ski brought back some memories. I learned to ski on an old wooden Maha as well on Lake Mead. Fun fact, The Fonze was skiing on Maharaja’s when he jumped the shark on Happy Days.

Our first RV trip (rental) from Tampa to Glacier National Park my Moses sat behind me like Charlie did here ... he was petrified of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" as I named her. She was noisy, loud and shook all over (2019 30' Thor). We drove 7,500 miles on our maiden journey. We now own a 2020 Tiffan Wayfarer 25' ... Moses loves the theater seats ... Our "Tillie" is quiet, smooth and delightful Moses is a great traveler in our sweet "Tillie" You were a big inspiration for us getting on the road Thank you ❤❤❤

Another great video. You guys cram so much good stuff into each Sunday. I laughed right along with Trish about your beardless first looks. The tips about towing the Subaru and the battery starter were worth staying to the end. We have been to Amarillo more times than I can count and have eaten at Big Texan Steak Ranch, but were never brave enough to try the 72 OZ! We did however finish our 5 OZ fillet challenge, but it was not FREE. Back to Route 66!

Yep, I skied on a Maharaja too, for about 8yrs. HEY, THE RIGHT SIDE TOW PLATE ON THE SUBARU IS LOOSE!! When you jumped on the tow bar it was clearly loose. Make sure to CHECK IT OUT.

We stayed at the KOA in Amarillo for the 4th of July weekend last year and took the big horn limo to the Big Texan Steakhouse. Side note: 4th of July fireworks in Amarillo are AMAZING!

Nice try on the steak. Reminds me of the Great outdoors movie! I liked the part when you were talking about waterskiing. Bob Maher that made all the maherajah water skis lives next door to my aunt in Clearlake,Ca. He’s still making them today along with charcuterie boards and all sorts of things at 80 something years old. He’s a cool guy

I thought you did great until I read on their web site that the record for the 72oz steak challenge is Molly Schuyler at 4 minutes and 22 seconds and she ate 3 of those 72oz steak dinners in under 20 minutes. I can't imagine that. I was also surprised to find that 12% of attempts are successful. Regardless, great video ... once again.

Very fun video. I have eaten at the Big Texan 3 times on our trips from California to Florida, but never tried the 72 oz steak. As far as towing a Subaru, you can not tow any Subie with the CVT, you can't even put the front tires on a dolly it has to go on a trailer. I have a 20 Forester with a CVT, and I ended up buying a Chevy Spark with manual transmission to tow behind our class A. If you are ever in Tucumcari NM, there is a nice casual restaurant on Route 66 called Dan's Diner, just a few miles from I40. Thanks for the video.

Shamrock has the most amazing restored old gas station. We ate dinner at Big Vernes. Stayed south of town at a self serve rv park.

I can't believe y'all tried that. That was hilarious! Great video! Had a friend whose daughter's boyfriend actually finished the meal. They said he looked 4 months pregnant and groaned all the way home to Albuquerque. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
