Most route 66'ers skimp when they get into Illinois when starting in California.. you didn't! You showed a great mix of what Illinois has to offer. Woo hoo!
What a great series, Josh! As the father of adult children, I can guarantee that the memories you created with your dad will be among the most precious either of you will ever have.
Great series, seems like you had a great time with your dad, and that's the best part. Touching on Springfield, IL; the Lincoln library-museum has this cool show thing you can watch where holograms come out of the books as a guy tells you a story, it's really neat. They also have a carillon ( a set of like church bells that is a musical instrument somebody can play) in Washington Park that you can climb and at certain times they have somebody playing it which is very cool. The old state capitol downtown is really neat too and there are some great places to grab food there too.
Did you go to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge? Highly recommended among any Route 66 traveler! Although I understand that you can't always go everywhere on 66, but this classic bridge was one of the connections between MO and IL. This is one of four bridges that carried Route 66 across the Mississippi River. Next time you're out on the Mother Road, you gotta check it out. Plan on a couple of hours because the bridge is a mile long. Great videos, btw! I have traveled the Illinois portion, and I'm always looking for ideas as far as the other states. I've actually made some 66 videos myself (if you're ever bored....)
I lived in Dwight for a few years. Been going there since 1988 though. Lived not far from some of the original route 66 and about 50 yards from that gas station in Dwight
Thanks for the Route 66 journey. I did the Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica a few years ago. There is so much to see (even now). It was a nostalgic memory of my trip. I am so glad we did it when we did. I now live in Australia and have Parkinson's Disease. My timing was right. As there is no way I could do it now. Watching your Route 66 Series is now my way of visiting the Iconic Road.
Thanks so much for this video series! I know I'll never make the journey myself, and now I feel I won't be missing much because your videos hit all the high spots. Nicely done, guys. Looking forward to more of your travels.
Amazing roadtrip and so much fun to watch! Driving the Route 66 is one of my the biggest dreams. One day... I had to subscribe, thanks for the journey.
Looks like you had a good trip. We raised 3 kids in Dwight, Illinois. The gas station there was called "Beckers Texaco" & I bought many gallons thru the years. We live in Colorado now but I worked at RR Donnelley & Sons in Dwight (you went by it on your way to Braidwood) then transferred to Colo. Pres Obama as a Ill state senator stopped many times at that corner to McDonalds on his way to Spfld, Ill. That was the 1st stop light out of Chicago. Plus, as a teen I was an Usher at the Rialto Theater in Joliet.
You went to collinsville but didn't check out the Cahokia Mounds! a very large earth monument build over a thousand years ago. I hope you hit the old joliet prison too you were RIGHT there! (Beginning of blues brothers)
Fantastic road trip with your Dad , very cool 😎 could you round up about how much you spent on that trip ? You rented the cars and stayed at hotel/motels, eats, gas, museum costs, snacks, desserts, parking even • =
I drove the Route in April of 2018, loved it and will do it again if I get the chance. I have the same hat your dad has, got it at the Big Texan "Home of the free 72oz steak". I had a burger... :)
Hi, I have watched almost all of your videos, and all I wanna say is incredible. United States is such a country with short history but splendid culture, just hoping I can have chance to visit those places in the near future. Cheers
I’ve enjoyed every single video on these series. I hope you keep on going on adventures with your dad, so you can share with us. And it was awesome that we got to see your cool grandma, too 😁 Great job Josh! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I’ve really enjoyed these. I’m sure your dad did too. I’m hoping to make that trip myself some day. I didn’t know you could get a passport (saw that in your Arizona one) so I’ll definitely have to do that.
Hi from England. I really appreciate the presentation and the quality of your videos. I have been fortunate to be able to travel on much of Route 66 and this brought back happy memories. I look forward to your future travels.
Thanks, again, for your EXCELLENT Route 66 video series! I enjoy getting my kicks on the route when I can and your series will be among my "go-to" videos when planning a trip or to recall my own good times.
Hello, I was so happy to see your trip through Route 66. Can you tell me how much it cost this adventure i mean hotels... thanks mate and hope to do it with my family too.
Would love to see you do a "Things to do in Chicago" video. I understand you guys did not have all the time in the world, though. Chicago is one of my favorite cities that I've visited. This was such a well done series. Hope it inspires many more to make this road trip!
This video inspired my family to go this year and it was sad post covid how the trip was. only 1 place had a passport and gave us two stamps because no one else is doing it right now. I will say they were the coolest and friendliest people we have met at those stops. also henry bunny ranch owner says hi josh lol also, no more bunnies because of covid and some places were closed so couldn't go in and see.
Thank you very much for posting this series. My wife and I will be celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2020 and will be traveling Route 66 at a snail's pace to celebrate. We will make our first tour from east to west. I plan to watch all of your posts several times in reverse taking copious notes to be sure that we don't miss too many highlights. On that subject, did you use any guidebooks or anything in print to plan your trip and especially any that you took along as a mile-by-mile guidepost? What, if anything, can you enthusiastically recommend that we get in advance and take along to lead the way? Thanks in advance.
We used a couple apps when we went, with this one being one of the better ones apps.apple.com/us/app/route-66-scavenger-hunt/id684535110 We also got a few books as well and they were nice to have but most of the books had the same stuff in them so one is probably enough. Hope that helps!
Thanks for this series! I actually clocked it out and to see everything we'd want to it would take us a minimum of 18 or 20 days, and about a $2000 one-way car rental... So I think we'll be living vicariously through your videos for a while still :D
This is one of the best Route 66 video series I've seen! Had a great time traveling along with you and your Dad. I'll be retiring in about a year and this is one of the first trips I plan to make as soon as I am free! I only wish my father could join me. He spent his entire working career as a sign maker in Vermont and he would have loved all the old signs along the route.
What a awesome trip to do with your dad. I live in Chicago and have not been down Route 66 to the end of Illinois even. This is on my bucket list to ride the whole route 66 . Awesome !!! thanks for posting.
I really enjoyed this series! Nice that you ended in my home state. I know and have been to several of these stops. I've always wanted to travel route 66.
Cool! I came through STL last year, for the first time since I was a wee child. Unfortunately, on a Greyhound bus. Stuff you missed in Joliet that you might’ve gotten just by going a few blocks out of the way (and probably noted on the tourist map as well): the old State Penitentiary (looks like a castle), the Des Plaines River and draw/lift bridges (if you hit 10,000:1 odds and came at just the right time, you might’ve seen a bridge raising) See after 9:00 in this video, drone footage of one of those massive railroad lift bridges in the raised position ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xm0dsr8_AC0.html But even without a bridge raising, the river is a pretty cool site from one of those bridges (say, Chicago Ave) especially on a Sunny day. Most impressive thing about Chicago isn't the bean, but the whole skyline and architecture , especially as viewed from south Michigan in the south Loop, or at Michigan and Wacker (at the river) or from Lake Shore Drive looking west. It's sad the city and State's retarded political leadership have rendered Chicago a no-go zone for tourism for most of the past year.
My friend lives in Springfield and we have been to most of the places in this video and thanks for showing some that we missed the next time i go back there I'll have to check the ones I missed.
I'm French and I took pleasure to follow your beautiful trip!! I did a similar trip in 2015 so I recognized some places you visited! It was a very good serie of videos!
Awesome series!! Thanks for taking the time to share it with everyone. My wife and I hope to make the same trip this year in 2020. Driving from Ohio to Santa Monica and then traveling East.
In your video I saw that you found the Cozy Dog Drive In Route 66 Experience Hub. Are you aware that there are approximately 70 of these experience hubs scattered across the state of Illinois?
Well done. I randomly clicked on one of your posts. I enjoyed it so much I subscribed so I could see all of your journey. What you and your dad shared together was great to see. I am a dad to 4 terrific kids and have shared some good road trips with them, nothing like this though. I am watching from Queensland, Australia. Cheers Wayne.
When in Collinsville, you missed Cahokia Mounds. This goes back over 1000 years. You missed out on Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, about 8 miles northwest of Springfield. You skipped Dixie Truckers' Home. I worked in Braidwood for about 6 months in 1985, so I spent a fair amount of time eating at the Polk-a-Dot Drive Inn and even more quarters in the Centipede video game. You did miss the Braidwood Inn, where I stayed years before Steve Martin and John Candy did. The Launching Pad is in trouble right now and there are threats to destroy the Gemini Giant, so it is good you saw it when you did.
I also appreciate that you showed the Lincoln Illinois Looking For Lincoln wayside marker. Are you aware that there are 215 of these wayside markers scattered across the state of Illinois? Are you aware that you're supposed to pencil rub the seals on the signs for souvenirs?
Thank you both for this LOVELY & super-cool videos trip. Ive watched all the 14th & I laughed with you both & grandma is ADORABLE. I think she can make better chicken wings, right?!? ;) God bless you. xoxo
We did the Route thru Illinois in September .... so cool 😎.. we are looking forward to doing Missouri this year .... you give such good info ... thank you
New subscriber and plan to start the Route 66 road trip on my 66th birthday in September! We are starting in Chicago and heading west. We are enjoying your videos and will reference them along the way. I will try to update as we travel through the states. We read blogs and bought Jerry McClanahan’s book EZ66 Guide for Travelers. I’m old school so I plan to journal in a notebook (paper and pen not computer). 🤣 Tip to all - travel when you’re young, it gets harder as you age! Happy trails!
Hi, I have been planning the Route 66 trip for 25+ years since my study in Texas in the 90's. Thank you for making this tremendous video and sharing to the public. I enjoy this video and take the notes where you stop. Hopefully I can make the trip in the next 2-3 years!
Mufflerman were made by dad Bill Swan along with many other iconic fiberglass statues which can be seen in short Amazon ebook for only 14.99 called "The man behind the mufflerman ".
Great video dude 🙂👍 you guys finally made it to the end of your travel on route 66 🙂 these places on route 66 look cool and adventurous 😎👍 and the food at all of the restaurants in route 66 look amazing and fantastic👌but anyways it looks like you guys had an amazing time in Illinois and to see all of the Abraham Lincoln historic sites 👍👍👍👍.
I have enjoyed your Route 66 Series, as it has been many years since I traveled what was left of the famous road. Of course, I am now really missing my parents, after seeing all the fun you and your dad had. Your dad is a good sport! If you don't mind answering, what was his age during this special father-son road trip??
Josh, I've been following you & your dad on your journey. I've been to some of the stops in the west. I've enjoyed the video. Thank you for taking us on your journey.
The current Cozy Dog location is where I used to live in the 80's. Cozy Dog was at the current Walgreens location just to the south. It shared a building with a Dairy Queen.
Hi Josh Just found your channel and your videos are awesome. Keep it up. I have been to many of the same places and agree with most your recommendation. Keep on traveling and I look forward to more videos
I just saw all the spots that you showed in this state. Thank you for your work. I learn by seeing so your videos are great for me. I can stop them then play them to make sure that I get the name and places correctly. Thank you so much.
