Another Stirling Silliphant great dialogue.
We take a detour to Youngstown, OH (with the steel mills' smokestacks belching in the background) because Buz read in the papers that an old NY street idol of his that went on to become a pro boxer will be fighting tonight. "It says in the paper here that Johnny fights this Friday, and that's something I gotta see." And finds out that while our memories stay frozen as things were, real life has a tendency not to.
Aired: 2 Jun. 1961
Director: David Lowell Rich, Writers: Stirling Silliphant (teleplay), Leonard Freeman (story), Cast: Darren McGavin, Lois Nettleton, Edward Asner, Clement Fowler, David Clarke, Al Lewis (Car 54, Munsters), Ben Yaffee, Joseph Archer.

Probably one of the best scenic openings to the TV Series there was. Driving into Youngstown with all the Smokestacks, (at least one belching) Industrial Buildings, Railroad Cars and Tracks, with the Intro Music playing. It was really surreal to watch.

My Dad was in this. He's the good looking guy in the suit in the beginning scene and again in the pool hall. Mike Fabek. He's been gone 38 years. Surreal experience watching this.

I lived in Chicago and was thirteen at the time. Heard they were filming on Milwaukee avenue and Wood. Ran there and had a chance to meet Martin Milner. George Meharis had left because girls were running up to him and tearing at his cloths for a souvenir. I stood next to Martin Millner so exited as he leaned on that famous car.

I also grew up in y-town and was 7 years old when this was shot.I vaguely remember someone mentioning the show being filmed back then.I worked for Republic Steel whilst attending Youngstown State. Unfortunately the steel industry is all but completely gone there now and so is my family. Time marches on. Thankyou for the flicks.

Other than iconic background shots, why they were on Poland Ave is a mystery. You can't get in or out of Y-town on that road easily. My grandparents lived just up the hill from Center St in Lansingville. Vtsko dobre

My home town, was born here in 1937 in Northside Hospital. At one time, Youngstown was #3 on a list of cities to be bombed by the enemy, as it was a very important producer of 'steel", so critically needed by our military! Was also known as "Murder Town, USA", when the Mafia once controlled the city. My Dad, Joseph Pallante, told me that he once went to grade school with the (later) notorious 'Sandy Naples'. Glad that my Dad took the 'honest' route in his life! We were poor, but we were 'honest' :)

I met someone who grew up in Youngstown. He told me that it was the Wild West. On Saturday night they locked the doors from the inside because people’s porches, and cars, would be blown up. I drove through there about ten years ago. The city looked empty, and the steel museum was closed.

I just drove this route this past week - the bridge has been replaced with a new bridge in the very same location - it's the center street bridge and you can see on this map where they made the right hand turn off Poland Ave. (referenced in the dialogue) to cross the bridge: center street, youngstown ohio

hi larry. thanks so much for this info. i'm trying to locate every scene of every episode on google earth. i've done quite a few episodes already. but this bridge, i could not find a truss bridge matching the original on the show. no wonder, it was demolished. the whole area changed so much. an entire steel mill is completely gone! the one thing i could find that is still there, is the storm drain just before the corner. thanks again for filling a blank on my map.

Glad to help, Alberto! By the way, here's a link to a pic of the Castle Restaurant, which stood at the corner of Poland Ave. and Center St. until it was demolished to make way for the newer bridge. You can see it as they make the turn metromonthly.wordpress.com/2012/01/09/blue-collar-eats/

Larry Kennedy got it. that is great. you can really see it's the same one. this eatery must have been really busy. i have been to a lot of steel mills in america, during the 80s, but i dont think i ever got to youngstown. thanks again.
