See the Cambridgeshire Busway, Route B in action. On normal roads from Drummer Street Bus Station, Cambridge, then to St Ives Bus Station. Via Orchard Park, on the world's longest guided busway.
The Busway opened years late, on 07.08.11.
Filmed from the top deck, front seat. Speeded up 3 1/2x faster than reality.
The buses run along concrete guideway troughs. These were laid along 16 miles of the former Cambridge to St Ives railway. There is a similar extension towards the South of Cambridge towards the hospital and Trumpington.
In the city the buses run on regular roads.
The railway to St Ives last saw passengers in the 1970s, but continued as a goods line until the 90s.
Trams Are tops is pleased the track is being used for something more than a dog walking track. However it would have been better as a train and tram system, with local connections by tram, and longer distances like London served by train.
The Busway has a superb cycle way next to it running all the way to St Ives from Cambridge. This has been incorporated into National Cyele Route 55

It's true, I live in Cambridge, people do speak like squirrels and cycle really fast. The busses do go at that speed.

These Busway Buses Should Have To Travel At 52 MPH, But Stagecoach & Whippet Buses Are Allowed On The Busway Route. Route Names Are A, B, And C. R Route Names Are Allowed On The Busway Up to 6 Days A Week. Saturday To Thursday. While Rest Run 7 Days A Week. I Live In Sheffield Cannot Go On The Busway In Cambridge.

The difference is both trains and trams are really limited because of the tracks whereas buses are able to leave the busway and drive around just like any other bus, therefore if customer demands change in the future the on road routes can be altered accordingly. And it is well documented in the relevant literature that busways are cheaper and easier to build and maintain.

Nice but is there any way you can put captions on at the stops to say where the bus is?

They've got the sequencing right now, this was filmed right at the start of the busway's operation.

@bakedbeanishdragon Except it wouldn't go through either the heart of Cambridge or St Ives; you'd have to walk nearly 2 miles to the station, or get a bus. Plus a railway line limits the train to the railway line and safety limits the frequency. The routes can be expanded in the future, when we have a government that believes in public transport, to divert into various villages enroute, and they could run at minute intervals if the demand was there.

How many times do they have to stop at red lights! Unbelievable they didn't make them anticipate approaching buses.

I guess it's better than nothing. It's preserving the route should they decide to upgrade to a tram/heavy rail system. We currently having issues in my city where we sold off the land that once had rail routes and due to the raising price of fuel - we are forced to opt for a shared road/public system in a already congested road system.

What's with the weird "non-guided" bits at 3:36?, and then the really short guided bit at 4:21? I wonder how the former will work in really wet, or icy conditions?

It would not be complicated to replace the current concrete beams with beams that also included an embedded set of rails for a tram or light rail vehicle to simultaneously use.

There are no rails (like a train or a tram) the buses have rubber tyres, using the guided ways or regular roads. The guideway is just a trough for the wheels really. the Austrialians and Germans had one first, this one is the world's longest, at 14 miles.

The second guided busway in use in the world was in Birmingham. Sadly it's gone now.

But if there is a driver why bother with the guided part at all? Just extra cost and inflexibility.

it would actually be going that fast if it was a train. thumbs up if you agree

Was never in favour of the (mis)guided busway and would much rather they have reinstated the railway, but since its here i really hope it dont become a white elephant and people continue to use it after the novelty factor wears off.I honestly think though this will be a thorn in CCC side for decades to come due to the massive overspend and hope tax payers dont have to foot the bill because majority of locals never wanted it to start with. Good luck-you'll need it!
