Today I have a look at routing pipes under a floor in preparation for a toilet installation. We look at how we've planned the job. How we've removed floorboards safely and how we've made sure the water is off and ready to work on. We also show you the soldering technique I use underfloor. If you need any more help, then comment below. Thanks!

i've literally just spent an afternoon with some floor boards up the amount of crap i had to clear out where previous projects have used the 'international dustbin'... (this included plasterers mess, heating engineer mess.. coffee cups, an 80s newspaper, mars wrappers, wire offcuts, nails screws, everything you can imagine.) i find this approach really insulting.. However, as always, great video, keep up the great work!

I’m glad not the only plumber with a gardening type kneeling mat! I also use a large gym mat when there’s space, can kneel on it, lay on it, chuck my tools on it and scoop them up in one hit.

Really good to see a real installation, and good to see you planning the work so as to minimise the time that the water has to be off. Excellent video. Thanks

I like your video. The only thing I dislike is throwing garbage in the hole, because when I have to repair something downstairs and open the ceiling and get all this garbage in my face. I usually try to vacuum whatever garbage is left behind by the other contractors. Just my opinion.

You run into the many of the same conditions and challenges I deal with here in Seattle, USA. There are more older buildings with brick and mortar in your area than we have. I like doing the remodels on older buildings more than new ones. It's interesting and fun to deal with. I once found some old money in a joist bay of a 100 year old house. I gave it to the homeowners. You ever found any thing cool someone hid away and forgot about?

Spot on, real life knee and lower back destroying work under floorboards with no room to swing a Big G! Defo feed that solder in. Small tear drop underneath = full joint, nothing wrong with that. Dont buy into the Insta obsession to make it look like there is no solder people, that doesnt represent what a good joint should look like 🛠

Pretty much learned how to plumb from you mate, I’ve been going it 6 years now. Nice to see now I watch your newer videos that I’ve pretty much got the same tool collection as you. You always make me laugh too! Sometimes I fuss over whether I’m doing the best job I can, but frankly it’s all about getting the job done and having no leaks. How would I book you to do some work for me by the way? Can’t imagine we’re far apart judging by your accent!

I made a simple mistake once. In my own home, changing a toilet syphon. Turned off the water at the main. Emptied the cold system and closed the taps. Undid the cistern. Cold pipe now open ended, no local valve. I was mucky so decided to wash my hands using hot water. Oops. Ball valve opened in the loft and emptied the still full feed pipe all over the bathroom floor. I had to think fast while i had my finger over the pipe. Forgot the supply to the loft!

If you have rad pipes under a floor and when someone stands on them they creak, is that going to break at some point or are copper pipes durable?
@ianlunn9730
@ianlunn9730 5 лет назад
Nice job mate and funny *real world* video too.. I HATE bathrooms... no room to work so planning is VERY important!... Just one point... I was taught that cold pipes should ALWAYS be run UNDER hot pipes. From that Tee (which presumably fed your toilet), it looks like they ran the cold OVER the hot? Worth pointing out to any DIY'ers...

I know it was already there, but that massive notch in a joist for a waste pipe is surely not what building regs allow. As it's on a joist that carries the weight of a full bath none too good either. From memory, large holes, such as that required for a waste pipe, ought to go through the middle of a joist in the "safe zone" and not be more than 25% of the depth of the joist. I wonder how many bathroom floors in the UK have got those massive notches. I can see why it's done, but to be avoided.

The Big J. Quick question. My 4” stack terminates in the loft space like most new builds . But during my bathroom refit I want to move it . Does it have to go up to the loft space or can it be hidden behind the false wall where the toilet frame will be . Obviously it will have a valve on the top . Does it need a good hair supply for the valve ? The one behind you is only at waist height is that ok ?
