What a shame folks didn't have access to HD cameras back then. Today's smartphone would have taken awesome images then of such amazing subject matter. Well done for documenting this saving it from being like tears in the rain.
This brings back memories. I worked at camberwell garage until 88.. Used to drive 12, 3, 172, but mainly the 159's when a rounder was kennington to thornton heath, to west hampstead back to kennington. Thanks for sharing :-)
At 3.04 you just catch a glimpse of RML 2482. That was the very last Routemaster I drove on 26th March 1987 on route 207 from Hanwell Garage. I think most of the RMLs from Hanwell and Uxbridge went to Peckham and Camberwell on the conversion of the 207 to OPO. Thanks for sharing this great video.
That sounds like Peckham for sure! LOL> Used to go there during the era of Jones & Higgins. Yes, i can understand why you'd find garages fascinating..same reason why people go to art galleries. There are 2 No.12 Routemasters that have made their way to my area in Orangeville, Ontario which i find bizaare!(Ha ha) It's like my memories have followed me. Many thanks and have a great New Year.
taildragger53 i knew jones and Higgins in Peckham i used to go in there with my grandmother and I remember Peckham bus garage with its forecourt but sadly it is now a Sainsburys supermarket
From 7.57 there is footage of battersea bus garage at Hester road also the open parking area to the side known as the wasteland to the inside staff/engineers the footage was shot after closure of operational busses 19,22,39 . It was good to see the old place long since demolished
Glad you like them - more to come when I get the time. I filmed through to the end of RMs in service. Early equipment was video 8, then Hi8, and finally DV tape. Some of the video 8 was copied onto VHS before transfer to DVD!
I used to wander around Fulwell garage as i lived nearby in Teddington and in 1969 they still had a few trolley busses gathering dust in the back ( last one drove in there in 1961)
At 09.40, there is a shot of an RM with a RCL bonnet number. All our 'RCL's in the country area had twin headlamps, air operated rear doors, bigger engine and higher ratio diff. Not sure what this one is all about as it is different.
I have some later RM digital video footage to upload once I've copied it to my laptop. Now we have full HD camcorders, this Video 8 stuff reminds me of watching 8mm cine film - but the uniqueness compensates for the lack of shaprness.
