I assure you as an Australian, that after six months of travel all over the USA, the VAST MAJORITY of Americans can not tell the difference between an Australian accent and a British accent. This does NOT make them stupid. Most Americans are rarely exposed to both (esp Aussie accents) and therefore it's perfectly understandable that they struggle to tell the difference. If you frequently hear Aussie and British accents it's easy to tell. If you haven't, they can definitely sound similar.

I find it very easy to tell the difference between Australian, British, Scottish, and Irish accents. I guess living in a city such as San Francisco, and it being such a melting pot made it easier to decipher the intonations of the speaker. I love the Australian people. They are very warm and easy to talk to and always interested in what you have to say. I think the cutest thing I heard was a child telling his mom, "Be gum Mum, me bum's numb." and "It looks like you got the rough end of the pineapple." So there you have it. No worries mate.

@Mav_F
@Mav_F 5 лет назад
There is a reason behind it also. So dont turn your nose up on your background and our culture. Remember the convicts hated the English and wanted nothing to do with them, so they didnt want to be associated with English even if most were Irish, lol. Also to stop the English Prison Guards from understanding them what they were saying. Another reason is to stop flies, dust etc going into your mouth when speaking. So hot here and to finish a sentence faster than you can say Cooweee. lol
@bloat1235
@bloat1235 2 года назад
@@Mav_F Do you have any studies or research to back that up? Also only about 20% of Australians have a convict ancestor so this idea of hating the English is very odd. English is also the largest ethnicity in Australia to this day. We have a sports rivalry and enjoy banter but the UK is probably Australia's closest country after NZ. The Australian accent(s) is commonly understood to have developed from an amalgamation of British accents, for example general and broad Australian have a lot of similarities and are often confused with Cockney and Estuary. Cultivated Australian, and perhaps people mainly from South Australia who pronounce words dance like "dahnce" can be seen to be much closer to modern RP English. Australian's also lack a rhotic r, which is common in America, Ireland and West England. The Australian accent did not develop due to a dislike of the English, otherwise we wouldn't sound so much like them, or the fact most Australians have English ancestry. The rest about prison guards and flies sounds like bollocks to be fair, but you might be joking.
@Mav_F
@Mav_F 2 года назад
@@bloat1235 The Aussie accent and slang came from the children of the convicts. Because the mixed nationalities etc and slang changed the accent to what the country Australians sound like, the true blue accent. Now our accents, are mixed with other cultures and aren't as strong but still noticeable. The Adelaide people do pronounce the words the proper British way. If you listen to anyone from Melbourne and Sydney they almost sound the same with a slightly different tone. You can hear it if you listen correctly. They say their words the same. There were a few documentaries on this many many years ago. It was the children who started the slang so the soldiers didn't understand what they were saying or referring to. The accent followed as they were from different backgrounds with different accents. Like today with so many different accents in Australia now, our accent is changing, mine has since I started working in the city.

Something very interesting that I've noticed is that you can frequently tell if an American is black by his voice alone. But not if they're Australian. I've heard some young black Aussie guys in their early 20's who came here as refugee's from Africa in their teens without any English, and now they sound as Aussie as the next guy without a hint of their heritage.
@waynewalters426
@waynewalters426 2 года назад
Because in America sounding "normal" means sounding "white", God forbid. Whites, Asians, Indians, and most Latinos all sound pretty indistinguishable here; but like you said most blacks talk in ebonics or with some sort of twang from it. I don't know where you stand political but I think this is bad for establishing a nation identity, but great if you are a black Marxist. So imagine what even the media wants people to think about ebonics?
