I've changed the gearbox / clutch a few times on this car which I currently own and maintain. I've also adapted it with a remote thermostat and other alterations to avoid head gasket failure. A really brilliant car in my opinion. I've got 2 to last until I give up driving.

Yay First comment I’m Getting further and further to appreciate older Rovers at their most now. I love the Rover P6 now as a classic it looks so cutting edge for something that was created in 1963 38 Years before I was born and still looked great in 1973 brand new and looking great in the 2006 TV show Life on Mars. It also looks fabulous in 2019 I’d love to own one beside my other dream cars on the list some are the Rover 75 V8 and the Jaguar XFR and a Rover 25 GTi and a 1969 Mustang Boss 302 or a 2017-18 Mustang 5.0 V8 (Bullitt Possibly) Or even a 2020 Shelby GT500 Mustang and if I’m lucky my ultimate dream car the 2006-2012 Aston Martin DBS V12 (the one out of the Fantastic James Bond Films Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace). Glad the R8 got a new gearbox Another rover saved even further. Just a shame that it doesn’t Happen every time when Rovers go to the scrapyard. The R3 Rovers are still my favourite the Rover 25 and 45. Also the Rover 75 and Rover P6.

Yes, first comment but RU-vid thought but was spam and hid it, doh! Ironically the 25Gti is probably the rarest car on the list. Its a shame Rover values are so low as lots get scrapped for very little

@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 5 лет назад
@@furiousdriving Yes, for some people it's still too soon. To be fair, Rover wasn't a disaster, really, it was a victim of circumstance in not being able to find investment in a time of challenging financial circumstances. I mean GM nearly went pop during the same period...
@furiousdriving
@furiousdriving 5 лет назад
@@gosportjamie And poor planning from a few years prior - they should never have bought the SV project when they needed to replace the 25/45 which was almost ready. They needed an MG halo car but not as badly as a bread and butter money maker, but thats a whole other thing its still sad the company died just on the cusp of turning around

Going to Le Mans and spending crazy amounts of money didn't help either.
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 5 лет назад
@@furiousdriving Yes, bringing out the SV before the replacement for the 25/45 was a bad mistake. I can understand why the management felt the need to have a halo vehicle, but they didn't have to have one right then. If they'd held project SV back until after the new mid-range car was on sale it wouldn't have hurt anything and by then the financial environment had improved enough that they might have actually sold SVs in numbers required to make it viable. I don't really think they needed a halo car, there was enough affection left from the old days in the UK and more development work on the V8 ZT and Rover 75 could have made that an M5 killer...

I had 2 of these years ago. I had to check coolant levels every week as both would randomly lose coolant. They could be fine for months, then in the space of a few days, the expansion tank would go from max to empty. After a top up, they could be fine for months again with no sign of coolant loss, then suddenly the expansion would be empty again. Both had exactly the same issue. So...keep an eye on the coolant!

This family of honda rovers all had quite high ratios.
@cross-axled
@cross-axled 5 лет назад
Most Metros used a 3.5 ratio diff, unless it was a GTI which used a 3.7. All R8's orginally had a 3.9 diff. Gonna loose a bit on acceleration, but the longer gearing will make it more relaxed at higher speeds. Can tell what diff ratio is in the box from the label. 5C = 5 speed 35 = 3.5 diff 37 - 3.7 39 - 3.9 From 1995 on Rover made an upgraded box (which PSA never did), and the gearbox code got a U to identify this after the ratio info.

Main shaft bearings have eaten through the soft aluminium housings,filled the box with swarf and eventually removed teeth or parts of.used to fit a lot of hose boxes,later ib5 ford box was a better box with stronger diff bearings than the earlier variants.

Rover built the PSA MA5 box under license for all the 1.4 K series R8's, and all 90's on Metros. Used them in the 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 K R3's and HHR's too, until they changed to Ford IB5's in the 2000's. Rover engineers worked to improve the shift change feel over that of PSA cars - thats why the Rover boxes have the large bob weight on the change lever. Boxes in PSA cars dont have them, the lever is much smaller.

I don't know why some cars are just singled out for the kind of treatment that means they are just looked after forever.?!...Hmm.. About the time Rover went out of business I had an Identical 'looking' 216 Rover. Theoretically it should have been even luckier than the one you are driving in the video. It was of the Honda engine variety with an auto gearbox, a low mileage and.. 'one careful lady owner'.. I owned it for a year... quite fast ? yes.. Reliable ? definitely. Economical ? NO. Very Lucky ? Definitely NOT.. It was broken into twice for no good reason other than sport.. Envious 'British' people took the piss out of it because at the time Rovers seemed worth next to nothing. To top it off I suspected it had been in a big side on smack..It just didn't sit right on the drivers side and the drivers rear wing and door just looked wrong. You will 'love' the last bit.. It cost me £1500 to buy and the year following I got £150 for it... I could have got 'maybe' a little bit more... The guy who bought it was grinning from ear to ear... And good luck to him !....

@@furiousdriving Well it's just the way the Cookie crumble's I suppose. I did learn a lesson in heart / head balance and to be generally more sensitive to the cunning of sharky mid. town car dealers that is for sure... In all fairness I think R8's are a good design (if not a little bit stringy) nice to drive and generally all round sensible cars. Don't go throwing it hard into any sharp bends though, the centre tracking has a habit of going a bit wonky and they'll pull to one side... Good on you for tying to keep it alive anyway :)
