Hello from the US! You have an exceptional grasp on automotive technology and have applied it as only a scientist would. Please make a few more videos.. and if you haven't already partnered with a shop, do so. Your knowledge and competency certainly would be appreciated by many! I had one of these engines in the '60s as GM created it, in a Buick special. Sadly, youth, circumstances and a wrist pin knock drove me to give it up. It was probably one of the best sorted GM cars of the era. Their inept handling of anything challenging like finishing development of this engine, the Oldsmobile turbo'd version of this engine, the Corvair, '63 Pontiac Tempest (front v8 engine & clutch, whip driveshaft & rear transmission.. very fast) etc. was and is saddening. A messy corporation coupled with Lucas Injection aside, you Brits did a great job on fixing another large corporations engineering malaise. Thanks again for the video! A drive and some exhaust sound under load would be nice also.
Thank you for your comments. I have made another video, but it is of a Hammond Organ and modified Leslie, made from a 1980's Colonnade. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hxAF-fXNgDU.html
You just made me sob…I thought I was flash when I sold my V8 Vitesse and brought a V6 Honda one. I know we have all said it…but if only we could go back and correct past wrongs. I’m envious mate…she’s beautiful 😍
now then Tony i loved your video very clear and well explained, dont stop there do more videos and better still i can drop you a 4.6 off for you to prep and tweak for me to drop into my sd1
What a fantastic piece of machinery you have there Tony one of the best conversions ive ever seen and something i could only dream of. I have a few Rovers myself please make more videos if you have time. Godspeed good sir!
This SD1 is so 'nasty,' if it got sent to car borstal, it would undoubtedly be, 'The Daddy!' Awesome 4.6 conversion- must pull like Concorde! Most excellent! :)
Hi Tony! I just stumbled across this video by chance - I believe this is the engine I bought from you a few years back after you had put the 4.2 into the SD1? I can report that it's been running happily in my MGB GT conversion for the last year or so, and it's still every bit the monster it was! It now has a Edelbrock 500 carb on it, and is running through a stronger R380 5-speed box and original MGB GT V8 3.07:1 axle - if it was too powerful for an SD1, it's definitely too powerful for an MGB, but it's certainly a hoot to drive. I didn't realise you had chamfered the big end bolt heads like that - I always wondered why I had no problem at all with sump clearance, great idea :)
Very nice to hear from you. I remember you coming , from London area, and also bought a flywheel. Shall we keep in touch? My email is ttmay@btinternet.com What type of 380 box did you use? They are very rare to get hold of. I have a T 5 box and V8 bell housing from a TVR 450 if you are interested. Copes with high power V8. Send me some pictures. regards Tony
Sounds a bit tickey but might just be how the mic picks up the sound. I presume the cam is in decent nick as these tend to wear cams fairly rapidly, especially when used relatively infrequently. There are various stories about the genuine TP motors & they did have some homologation bits inside them. Not sure what cam they used though. Nice old motors though. I built a GEMS style 4.6 for an old TVR I have with a top hat linered block, TVR885 cam, preload set adjusters etc running Emerald K6 management & a shortened GEMS upper manifold with RX8 DBW throttle body. They don't make massive numbers (the heads are very compromised) but they sound great & are very characterful. Makes the SD1 quite special.
Ps - the story goes that the 4.2 crank was a carry over from project iceberg (diesel RV8) so was unique. The 4.0 & 4.6 used bigger journals & went with the crossbolted block from the factory. I think the 4.2 had provision for the crossbolting but they weren't drilled. The 4.2 has different compression height pistons from memory too now i come to think about it. I did have a 4.2 crank from an engine & got part way to cooking up a plan of using low comp 4.0 pistons to make it work but ended up going 4.6 instead.
Hey Tony, there’s a chap in the US that has saved a mk1 3500, Prague Life his name is on here, there’s 4-5 vids he’s done so far, mate he definitely needs your help, please check him out, great video mate, more please on the Rover 👍👍
I wonder how you got the 4.6 crankshaft together to the 3.5-4.2 frontcover as the Land Rover 4.6 is a longnose type. I guess its a 4.5 conversion, or you did some machining. What is the motor code?
I think DW 525 spacer from Real Steel, does it. But I made up some aluminum spacers, from sheet alloy, to line everything up exactly, when the engine is on the bench. You can cut them easy from 2/3 mm sheet. You got to line up the water pump, alt, and crank pulley, then the ps pump. It's quite a time since I did it. What do you mean motor code? engine number?
I'm the new owner of this block and now run it in my MGB GT. I actually had the crank nose machined to match the earlier type so that I could run a complete factory MGB GT V8 cover and pulley arrangement without any further modifications.
