Oh the memories - used to have a S2 3500 Vanden Plas - tuned to 3.9 Did 10mpg on a good day downhill - the way I drove it I got 7mpg most of the time. That big orange light was always shining :) I used to keep two petrol cans in the boot at all times on longer journeys.
I think the Rover SD1's low fuel warning was triggered a bit early. We experienced a similar harrowing ride in Germany, decades ago, middle of the night, low on fuel but we did make it to the next fuel pump. Such indicators are much better than the simple 'out of fuel' warning light that comes up when your engine finally shuts down.
AFAIK, there never was a 3500S. The S2 range went: 2000 2300 2300S 2400SD 2600S 2600SE (replaced by VdP) 3500SE (replaced by VdP) 3500 Vitesse 3500 VdP EFi
That brings back memories for me. I had a sd1 3.5 se manual and my mate had the vdplas auto we use to drive to Dalby forest to watch the lombard rac rally with the audi quattro and lancing deltas proper rally cars . Aww happy days
Moggie Moggs I wonder if you could either confirm or denie something for me. Did the gauge clusters in sd1s simply side over to whichever side you needed it on. I might be crazy, but I swear someone maybe Jeremy clarkson demonstrated this once and I was amazed it was that easy.
Just a shame an electronic voice synthesizer was fitted to the Rover SD1 that was in the MG and Vanden Plas models of the Austin Maestro when launched.
You can still use a car for 30 to 80 miles on empty before it runs out depending on the car and how you drive it, really best not doing high revs with a fuel tank running low with muck coming through or just after refilling.
I find when I put small amounts under £5 at mo in the tank the needle won't register it at all and will not continue if you do it a few more times either so when you finally put £6 in it it can show £15 when the needle finally moves.
A full tank seems to balance cars better make them more stable drive more comfortably and the engine more responsive probably because there's less muck coming through from the tank.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Kids... who would have them? I drove these for three years in the Met. Fantastic cars but your logic is all to cock! Nice to hear the sound again though😀😀
What a nerd I am ! I think SE stopped in '83 to be replaced by VdP, so if yours is a post '83 model then it'll be clear you've been engine swapping, to nerds like me, anyway. I always fancied dropping in a V12 Jag engine, then you could badge the car: Rover 5300 Vanden Plas or something.
*you're. That's the contraction of 'you are'. When you want to contract (make shorter, easier to say) 'you are' it becomes 'you're'. 'Your' refers to a possession or a quality belonging to you. I hope that helps.
