Oh my, you took a giant risk lingering there....that is not eroding, it is growing. It is a stone sponge that feeds on geologists and hikers, forming a new cell pocket each time it grabs one and covers it in its stonelike body....I am so glad you made it away from there. : )

Sweet hike! It's added to my list. We saw similar honeycomb formations along the hike down to Havasupai, in red sandstone. Hikers put small limestone pebbles into the holes, to the point that most of the honeycombs have been filled up with limestone pebbles.

totally amazing mate we have a place here in tasmania called the honeycomb caves its very similar but on a scale we can climb through it’s an extraordinary limestone and riolite formation eroded by acidic magnetite overflow utterly incredible to explore ,great vid elley hope your well cheers

I’ve seen similar formations all over the US. Wind Cave has a section they refer to as “The Post Office.”
