This is part of our trip to southern Africa in 2019 that included four countries: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Botswana (then back to S. Africa). After a short stay in Pretoria we headed to Zimbabwe aboard Rovos Rail's three-night journey to Victoria Falls. The train is five-star luxury service, and travels the 1000 miles at a leisurely 45 mph, allowing for spectacular views of the passing countryside.
Their trains are outfitted as if from a bygone era, with essential modern conveniences to be sure, but without TV, radios, or internet. Cell phone use is to be in the privacy of your own quarters (though connection can be spotty). Dinner is formal, and the food is excellent, with South African wines galore. If you ever wanted to experience Africa as in Streep & Redford's "Out of Africa", this is the train for you! (I preferred to imagine Val Kilmer as Lt Colonel Patterson, riding on the front of a steam locomotive across the African plains.)
We snagged this deal from Rovos Rail as unadvertised, last-minute, bargain discount (possibly a resale of a cancellation?). The rest of our journey was cobbled together around this trip as the centerpiece. It all seemed to work out somehow.
Rovos Rail has many other fantastic trips throughout various parts of Africa. Further details about our journey, as well as their other offerings, can be found on their website: www.rovos.com/
Here's a recent video by Forbes about Rohan Vos and the founding of Rovos Rail:
• The man who founded on...
Further videos should follow: Sunrise walking tour of Victoria Falls, the Zambezi Queen riverboat, Chobe National Park, and Bongani Mountain Lodge (a favorite of Nelson Mandela!).

Excellent photography and music, outstanding presentation. We have also done the same trip in 2010. We made 8 trips with Rovos, each one in a Royal Suite.

Wasn't sure how to contact you. I've had things going on here, so not watching WE regularly, and usually on Roku or VR headset, without comments being a feature. Sorry to hear about your cat. I would google this: 7 Things To Know About Living With A Tripod Cat. (It seems they can adapt, but I'm certainly no expert.) What does the vet say about if this cancer can spread? How much does he think your cat will be impaired? Our cat who died of cancer had it internally where there was no possibility of simply removing tumors successfully. Chemical treatment did nothing at all. I also don't know your financial situation, so I hesitate to give advice there as well. I don't regret trying to save our cat, but I think in the long run the money would have been better used as a donation to the local animal shelter where she came from. As to the pain & associated guilt, I think that happens no matter what you do. It's hard for me to say that, but that was my experience, and I think it's quite common. After all, they're like our children. In reality, there's no blame to be laid. You do what you can out of love and take your best guess, but what happens is beyond anyone's ultimate control.

@@rbeard7580 Thank you for reaching out! much appreciated. I had never come across osteosarcoma in cats. Nikita had a perfect annual checkup June 9, then two days later jumped from a high perch at my mom's house (something shes been doing for 5 years, Nikita is only 6 years old). She landed as if too hard, and has been limping since. On day 5, I had my vet check her, and we saw no swelling and couldn't even tell where on her leg was causing her carry it instead of using it. She said to give it 3 weeks. July 5 we took the x-ray and sent it out to the radiology specialist service for interpretation. I was cringing to think of the hundreds of cost for fixing a fracture or surgery for ligaments or something... July 11 the vet calls and says the radiographs (she took extra views that she didn't charge me for) are "primary neoplasia, high probability of osteosarcoma" So, that was extremely unexpected! Apparently if a biopsy confirms cancer and IF a chest x-ray shows apparently still cancer free lungs, then the recommendation is to take the leg. I'm no longer in communication with vets I used to work for. They are all long ago retired....but from what I can tell from googling, this usually has good results at least for 2-4 years, maybe normal lifespan. (or it could resurface elsewhere) As for tripod cat, she's basically been living that since the injury. I emailed the vet my questions yesterday afternoon, I just got back in town after being up at my mom's, I stopped by the vets ..but she won't be in until Saturday. It's hard the waiting. And as for cost it looks like 4K to biopsy, chest x-ray and amputate. No mention if added chemo is another consideration. Apparently this is slower moving in cats, but very fast moving in dogs. Doing nothing (in dogs) she said is a 3 months prognosis. I'll send a second reply here as my email address you're welcome to use if that's more convenient/conventional and delete it off here after you get it. it is helpful knowing others have been through such things too. The pets are definitely family members to me also.

@@rbeard7580 Covering all the bases. I sent my other response as a new comment on your video, separate from this reply thread. So as to ensure you get a notification that I posted. I wish WildEarth chat would allow chatters to communicate more easily, but it's understandable they can't/don't during livestreams. "Joy in HK" and I managed to exchange email a couple years ago. But had to go about it in a similar manner. It was easier when you tube offered the "one to one" private chat option during livestreams for side bar conversations. By the time I knew that existed, they took had already omitted that feature.

Beard, That was a wonderful video. What an experience to ride the rails of Africa in a vintage machine. You must still have great dreams of that adventure. I really get the feel of every place and the people. Thanks for sharing.

Hey! That was great and you have completed my 'round-trip' on Rovos as I went from VF to Pretoria in 2016!! With a morning game drive at The Hide but we didn't have the market. Going north looks like the better direction but it was a fun way for me to wind down my first trip to South Africa. Thanks for sharing!

I'm sure either direction is great. I'd like to do the Cape Town - Pretoria - Durban trip (someday!), but this may have been our our "one & only" with Rovos Rail.

I believe Rovos Rail now has a trip from Pretoria to the Victoria Falls Hotel, then by land to the Zambezi Queen luxury river boat, probably the only large river cruising vessel in southern Africa. Highly recommended!
