This is part of our trip to southern Africa in 2019 that included four countries: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Botswana (then back to S. Africa). After a short stay in Pretoria we headed to Zimbabwe aboard Rovos Rail's three-night journey to Victoria Falls. The train is five-star luxury service, and travels the 1000 miles at a leisurely 45 mph, allowing for spectacular views of the passing countryside.
Their trains are outfitted as if from a bygone era, with essential modern conveniences to be sure, but without TV, radios, or internet. Cell phone use is to be in the privacy of your own quarters (though connection can be spotty). Dinner is formal, and the food is excellent, with South African wines galore. If you ever wanted to experience Africa as in Streep & Redford's "Out of Africa", this is the train for you! (I preferred to imagine Val Kilmer as Lt Colonel Patterson, riding on the front of a steam locomotive across the African plains.)
We snagged this deal from Rovos Rail as unadvertised, last-minute, bargain discount (possibly a resale of a cancellation?). The rest of our journey was cobbled together around this trip as the centerpiece. It all seemed to work out somehow.
Rovos Rail has many other fantastic trips throughout various parts of Africa. Further details about our journey, as well as their other offerings, can be found on their website: www.rovos.com/

Further videos should follow: Sunrise walking tour of Victoria Falls, the Zambezi Queen riverboat, Chobe National Park, and Bongani Mountain Lodge (a favorite of Nelson Mandela!).
