Hmmm. I am aware that most British Anglicans don't go to Friday Prayers- why would they? I think it is more significant than you are prepared to admit. The point I was making is that there are now more religiously observant muslims in this country than there are anglicans; and that has to be significant. This is supposed to be a Christian nation; but I'm afraid that this is increasingly not the case. There are many "cultural anglicans", such as Dawkins, but they are they religious? Mostly no.
This is probably mostly true, which can be interpreted - if you are an anti-theist - as Christians being further advanced in the discovery of truth than Muslims are.
@FordCortinamk3 You have entirely missed the point, not only of the Archbishop's message, but also of the Christian tradition. This is probably to do with the Evangelical right's distortion of that tradition.
I suspect that Rowan Williams is down playing the significance of the Muslim presence in the UK somewhat. Tim Winter (lecturer at Cambridge Uni) has pointed out that recent statistics indicate that there are more Muslims attending Friday Prayers than there are Anglicans attending Church on a Sunday; and he goes on to argue that this is the most significant shift in British religious life since the Reformation. Islamification? No. But I think we cannot soft pedal the impact of the Muslim presence
The moment he said muslim numbers in this country were small, he lost the argument: because that was a point about numbers rather than principle. (Ie, 'You don't have to worry because the numbers are small', the implication being that we would need to worry if the numbers were big). We, his critics, don't have to argue any more.
I don't understand you. The Italian occupation of Ethiopia in 1935? What did the Anglican church have to do with it, and for what should Rowan Williams feel compelled to go out of his way to apologise.
All the muslims that I know love Jesus Christ, our Mother Virgin Mary and they even give Christian names to their children. There are obviously and analogously evangelical Muslims as I understand but their effect is so tiny compared to the very negative image in the media. What they can do right now is quite minimal. They are different but they are not intrinsically enemies. They are probably in a sense a rival faith tradition but they are most certainly much friendlier than new 'militant' atheists that don't want to see or bear the name of God in this land at all.

There is an almost limitless amount of hard evidence that any person of faith must necessarily deny in order to believe what they believe - it doesn't end with the virgin birth. Religion is nonsense, but to be able to show absolutely no respect to any aspect of a person's character just because they have faith convictions is also nonsensical. I think Williams is a man with his heart in the right place at least, which cannot actually be said for so many religious leaders.
Only because he has very good social skills and knows what to say, he could be a total prick within his own mind and not believing half he says. Do not be decieved by a mans charm, what he stands for is all the evidence you need for the measure of that man, and the respect he deserves.

This message sounds a bit too secular oriented for my taste. I don't get the sense that its coming from a place where Christianity is viewed as God's absolute truth and revelation to humanity. Once again, a 'woke' attitude .......... do we ever hear any Imam saying the same? No we don't. Until Christians and Muslims start to sing from the same songsheet, then like oil and water - it'll never mix. Christians are a bit too ready to appease other denominations, but they never bother trying to appease Christians. And therein lies the problem. When the day comes when the "My God is better than your God" ideology is confined to the bin, then THAT will be the day all faiths can come together as one collective good for humanity.
And he doesnt mention the kingdom of God once! "Citizen identity". Is that what a so-called representative of God is supposed to be promoting? "My kingdom is no part of this world" Jesus said. And that kingdom is about to destroy all religions, because none of them are really God's people and do the good things that God has asked them to do. I am an Ex Muslim, now a Deist and I don't see what was objectionable in what he said. He said that moderate Muslims oppose terrorism and that it is a Christian duty to love your enemy as Christ instructed. What did he say that is against Christian doctrine?
There is no such thing as moderate muslim. Any reasonable person if he reads d Koran will abhor it. D problem with likes like Williams is that they r ignorant of Islam. @@edwarddmellow8264 Consider for a moment that you using the Qu'ran as a gauge to predict the opinions of all Muslims in the world may not be the best way to go about it. Yes I am familiar with all the Christian apologists you mentioned. They do very good work. You need to understand that in Islam, clerics, for the longest time, had a monopoly of knowledge. 95 percent of the world's Muslims are unable to read the Qu'ran in it's original language. Christianity had the Protestant Reformation. The religious texts where translated into German and then English allowing all to read the Bible for themselves. No such thing happened in Islam so the clerics and scholars maintained a monopoly. Do you see the point I am trying to get at here? The majority of Muslims do not get their morality and guidance for how to conduct themselves in this world by reading the Qu'ran. They get it from their clerics. Now, here is where I might lose you, but take a leap of faith with me. The majority of Muslims clerics and scholars are more moderate and peaceful than the very book they study. It is theorized that Muslim scholars and clerics have been doing damage control and downplaying the unsavory parts of their religious text in order to keep numbers up. So yes, the Qu'ran instructs Muslims to fight non Muslims, but the majority of the world's Muslims don't believe that is there religious duty. Both of those statements can be true. Until you open your eyes and realize this issue is not black and white but indeed very very gray, I think you should keep your opinions to yourself. The last thing we need is for a peaceful "Muslims" who have never read the Qu'ran to be murdered in the streets because you've peddled this narrative that all of them secretly want to kill us. Ok? I agree we have to love our neighbours and muslims (the ones here, anyway) generally don't hate Christians. But Rowan worries me in how he speaks about "common citizenship" and joint ventures with muslims. Do we want them to remain muslims, untroubled and undisturbed? Or do we want them to come to Christ and go to heaven? What are we? Secular humanists with a pseudo spiritual streak?

@Ricki145 Why would you wish for more christian apologists instead of people willing to go the entire honest route of just not believing in things that obviously don't have any case or argument to stand for it in the first place? I will agree he is much brighter and less annoying and dangerous than most religious people I have met, but I'm still not cheering for all of the seats in my towns bar and my countries office to be filled with even "slightly christian" people.

I would say that's a description of Paul, the Hellenistic Jew (Hellenistic = Polytheistic), that abolished the Mosaic Law and taught the exact opposite of what the OT Prophets and Jesus observed, and taught his followers. Paul and the Nicene Council changed the religion from Monotheism to very close to being Polytheism. Jesus observed the Mosaic Law and practiced the belief and worship of the One True God Who is Alone in Authority. Paul changed the Oneness of God Alone into a trinity, or a divine sonship, or Jesus is God?, or praying to Mary - mother of God? Drastically opposite from the OT Prophets' teachings of The One True God Alone. Most of today's Christians are following Paul's and the Nicene's "version" of religion blindly. Be careful folks... I invite you all to Read and study the Holy Quran in order to come back to Monotheism, truth, and the Straight Way. Peace...
Muslims are 3-4 % of the population of the UK and that is a tiny percent, most british anglicans don't go to friday prayers but they regard themselves as anglican christians and the people who regard themselves as anglicans are far more then the people who regard themselves as muslims overall.
Virtually all religions are evil. For example, the Christian say that if you are not baptised you will languish for all eternity in hell. If that isn't evil I don't know what is.
Judging from these comments it seems that atheism can lead people to hatred as often as belief does. Don't you hear what Rowan Williams is saying about looking beyond differences towards a common sense of ctiizenship? How can so simple a message be lost on atheists and believers alike?
@benjaminjobrien How have I missed the point? The Bible clearly says many times in many ways that if you're not a Christian you will burn in hell for ever. God in the bible is very cruel and harsh to people who don't believe in Jesus. All I'm saying is that as a Christian the Archbishop's message should reflect god's will, not go against god's will. If he really has "god" on his side, surely he can't lose?
Rowan Williams believes in the 'virgin birth', despite the fact that this is based on the mistranslation of a greek word (the real meaning being 'young'); this fact is acknowledged by reputed historical biblical scholars - this is hard evidence that Rowan Williams denies, and therefore I cannot find an ounce of respect for Rowan Williams
I think josh lazarus you need to do a course in koine Greek before you make such comments-the Greek word you are referring to "parthenos" does not mean "young", it means "virgin" pure and simple. I've no problem with the "average muslim," it's the ones who claim to represent them I have a problem with. What he said is so weak and fluffy and goes nowhere near recognising how things can affect the "average." Was it he who called for Sharia law courts, before anyone had even asked for them? I understand what he means but he is unfortunately avoiding the fact that Islam actively promotes war on Christians & Jews, specifically, IN THEIR BOOK. Yet they took everything from these religions and then turned around and called them false. If you truly loved Muslims, you would tell the truth about their rubbish ideologies so you can FREE them like Jesus wanted. @@Rickta90 Read the Tafsir and commentary on those verses that you refer to so that you can learn the CONTEXT of when, what, and why those verses were revealed. Much of those verses were referring to a specific event or several events at that time and are not meant to be taken wholesale. Pick any verse and look at the Tafsir of that verse so that you can understand.
