ROWING FAST: USE YOUR LEGS AND ARMS LESS (and do this instead)

When you learn to row, they teach you "legs, then upper body, then arms". While this may work for the first three sessions, it is counter productive later on. This video explains what to focus on instead and what we actually want to achieve.

Nice explanation of the different styles of rowing and the effect they have on the force curve. As a rower you never stop learning on how to improve (and rowers do not age gracefully, we never give up.)

Thank you for the great video! Around 14:40 you mention that "some people can pull perfect force curves like this. I've seen this with lightweights ..." and then you demonstrate another technique "Would it be better hypothetically if they did this?". As I novice I'm having a hard time spotting the exact difference between the two different types of strokes/techniques being shown here. Is the "lightweight technique" rounding the lower back more? While the other technique is rotating (more) from the pelvis and using the core tension to keep the lower back straighter?

Thank you for you feedback! What I am trying to show is the difference in the timing during the drive when exactly I use the weight of my upperbody.

It takes time and lots of experience to really be able to notice the difference. I've been rowing since 1995 and I'm stoked I can see the difference between the things he talks about... MANY cannot and I didn't have much hope that I'd be able to xD. Be patient and keep watching his videos, which are FANTASTIC, AND as you progress and feel the differences in your own body when applying force in different ways it'll allow you to better see the minutia in others.

Sorry for the unrelated question, but how accurate are rowing machines compared to each other in speed and distance? Can there be big differences between different types?

It depends on how data is measured. If you are using strain gauges and angle sensors, the data is going to be accurate. If you are using secondary parameters such as flywheel speed and algorithms to deduce power, the data is going to vary. Most linear drive ergs use secondary data and the most well known seems to have accuracy deviations of up to 10% between new machines. This is according to a company owner I know who used to be a dealer for them and also manufactured his own strain gauge based measurement add ons.
