Following a screening of her favourite film of all time, iconic author, essayist, and self-proclaimed "bad feminist" Roxane Gay joins us for an extended onstage conversation about the romantic-comedy genre and its core ingredients, such as key plot devices, archetypal characters, and the improbable yet irresistible happy ending.
"Pretty Woman is my favourite movie and has been since I first saw it, in the theatre, in 1990. Back then, I thought Pretty Woman was so romantic. What's not to love about a down-on-her-luck, charming sex worker meeting a handsome billionaire and the two of them having a whirlwind romance, falling in love, and rescuing each other, as Vivian (Julia Roberts) suggests at the end of the movie? I am older now. I am a feminist. I recognize the problematic nature of Pretty Woman's story. I recognize the fallacy of fairy tales, and still, I believe in them. Still, I love romantic comedies and how they make it seem that life and love are not nearly as complicated as we make them out to be. I love all the moments in Pretty Woman that make my heart swell: when Edward (Richard Gere) takes Vivian shopping to ensure she receives better treatment than she did when she went shopping on her own; the warm relationship Vivian develops with hotel manager Barney; how she handles the snobby women at the polo match; and Kit (Laura San Giacomo) and Vivian's realness as they navigate life on the margins. But most of all, there is the romance, the sex on the piano, the night at the opera, the wild implausibility of this love story and how willing the movie makes us to believe in that story anyhow."
- Roxane Gay

Does anyone want to point out the hypocrisy here? BTW Paglia is the greatest cultural critic of our era.

I like getting a different take but you can see why there is so much fatigue in the center and on the right by their talking points. Everything is “problematic” despite her loving these movies. I get it -it can be fun to pick apart a movie. It can also be beyond tedious. I also take issue with Roxane not owing her whiteness. She is a great example of a multi-racial woman who could bring more insight to more people if she didn’t limit herself to one side of the aisle. But no one would ever say she’s multi. That fucks with their agenda. I am really glad she did what she did about Milo. Smart, IMO. He’s not even a true believer. He’s a bullshit provocateur and he is dangerous. Palliga despite her flaws has a deep knowledge of history. I don’t get that from Roxane Gay.

"Only the second film ever with a majority Asian cast" Except for all of Chinese, Korean and Japanese cinema.... Unless watching something with subtitles isn't good enough? The Vengeance Trilogy is amazing, Thirst was such a unique way to tell the Vampire romance story again (pretty much anything by Park Chan-wook is likely good), the direction in Memoirs of a Murderer is so good. And what about Hero in 2002 or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? You know these stories came to the west, they were popular in the west. Or does it have to be made in the west to have it be a valid contribution? Ugh...

You know she meant WESTERN movies with an Asian cast. And, those Korean, Japanese and Chinese, as great as they can be, are barely distributed in the US. Tf is she supposed to do about that ? The kind of movies that are actually MADE in the US have a lot of importance, too. For AMERICAN media to recongnize their population. I mean look how Minari, an American movie with an Asian American director about an American story about an Asian family, was viewed as foreign film at the golden Globes. Get off of that unwarranted high horse, Shanequa.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is one of the best movies ever. The love story, the drama, the fight choreography, the costume design, the score. An instant classic from start to finish.🎬💕🤓

Stopped watching when she said (around 10:25) that the real problem with the movie is that it makes sex work seems safe. WTF. In the first minutes of the movie we see a dead hooker in a dumpster. How the movie glamorizes sex work? Julia Roberts’ character has no money to pay the rent, has safety pins holding her boots in one piece, a prostitute is shown been abused by her pimp. Vivian says that she used to cry the whole time. Near the end a guy thinks he’s entitled to have sex with her just because she’s a prostitute and he can pay, when she says no he tries to rape her. Julia’s character implies that she only became a prostitute because she believed in the bad things people used to say abou her and in other scene she says that happy endings don’t happen to girls like her, meaning prostitutes. How can that be translated as glorification of sex work?

I shall listen to this again as she does say meaningful things. Possibly make an article re her POV & some of what she says. It's good stuff. But the bad part is her LIKING the movie! I totally hate it as much as I hate 'Raisin in the Sun.' BTW in my religion that I have composed & am working on now, it is important to say that prostitutes are SEX THERAPISTS who deserve as much respect as OTHER PROFESSIONALS. Sex therapy was once practiced in the Temples of Mother God & the women were Priestesses who are now called Sacred Harlots. Men came to them to receive the Holy Spirit - which after a time brought them to a state of Enlightenment. Tantra Sex is what this was, a lost Sacrament now. But everyone knew/knows that women's spiritual energy is higher than men's, men are dependent on women, & this is transmitted to them through sex as a SACRAMENT. Put that in your pipe & smoke it you Patriarchal pimp lovers.

Roxane lol. I laugh because she was such a joke on Tiny Shoulders. To say Barbie is unhealthy for young women, but being OBESE is? Come on now.

@grithvemmingoksen1464 5 лет назад
well..Barbie is an unhealthy ideal. No human being looks like Barbie, it's not even possible. Just because she says that does not mean she's promoting obesity either, that's something you make up in your own narrow mind.
@grithvemmingoksen1464

@Matt Carpenter Am I saying being fat is healthy? no.. a lot of things are not healthy. Roxanne herself has never said in any interviews I have seen of her at least, that being fat is healthy. But the world is not black and white. All thin people are not automatically healthy either. There is a lot of new research about obesity and often it is more important to focus on the mental health first, before you are able to focus on the body. Shaming fat people is not the way forward, it actually has the opposite effect research has shown..You are not better person because you are thin and being thing doesn't make you a health expert.

@@grithvemmingoksen1464 yeah no human being looks like barbie cause barbie is a doll if people get so insecure about a made up thing than that's on them plus Barbie didn't create this beauty standard that was a thing since forever all the features barbie possesses are things that people have found attractive since forever.
@grithvemmingoksen1464
@grithvemmingoksen1464 3 года назад
@@lampad4549 do you actually have a point or are you just telling me who Barbie is? Barbie is used as an extreme example in the video because she symbolise some problematic beauty standards, that HAS changed a lot through the years. Especially with models like Twiggy. If you like the barbie look, then you do you. I don´t give a damn.
@grithvemmingoksen1464
@grithvemmingoksen1464 3 года назад
@@lampad4549 Is Roxanne critiquing thin people in this video, or does she go around shaming peoples body size on Instagram like a bully? The Barbie comment is not an attack on thin people. Honestly get a grip. Being thin is a massive privilege in our society, and privilege is often something you don´t want to share with others. Just because fat people are speaking up, that is not an attack on other peoples bodies.
