Some 300 years ago, the area known today as the 21st Ward of Philadelphia was the hunting grounds of the Native American Tribe known as the Lenni Lenape. Some of the first settlers to arrive in the area were a doomsday cult lead by a mystic hermit from Transylvania. The main road into the area was a Native American trail; it was eventually built up into the Ridge Avenue and was even part of the Underground Railroad. During the American Revolution, a group of soldiers were brutally massacred along the Ridge and that's only the first twenty minutes of Nik's forty-minute film! In Roxborough and Manayunk: Tales of the 21st ward of Philadelphia, Nik brings 300 years of fascinating history to life. Even lifelong residents of the area have been amazed at all the incredible history, hidden in the past.

Thank you. I am 89 years old and grew up in Roxborough. My family lived in the area for many decades before my mother’s passing in 2004. There are still many relatives in the area. Most of these stories are ones I have known all my life. It was truly a trip down memory lane watching this. So many pictures are of places I have known. There is a large watercolor on my bedroom wall of Valley Green Inn. A favorite place. Thanks again.

My Father was born in Manayunk in 1920. Many family members are buried there. This is a great piece of history and thank you for your research and presentation. My great grandfather worked for the railroad and owned several of the long white town houses up the hill on Grape Street. He lost them all but one during the crash of 1929. My Father was born and raised there by his Aunt. I remember going there when i was young in the 1960's and 1970's. So many wonderful childhood memories and I recall several of the sites depicted. Wonderfully done.

@@NikStamps The triple villages of Roxborough, East Falls, Manayunk are tiny, safe residential pockets of special history within Philly. Very few people are aware we’re even here. (Kinda glad most don’t know; it’s safe and oh so friendly for the 70+ years we’ve been here).

I too have an ancestor's that migrated from Scotland and built there lives here. Great great grandparents that are buried in the Westminster Cemetery, overlooking the town they helped build. They worked for Pencoyd Ironworks. They have a website that talks about their history. I have a cool pic of all the workers at my Moms house I can scan and give you. Goggle it! Love this!

Yea man great video! What a great resource! Ive been head first looking into historic Philadelphia. There seems to be a lott of new videos on RU-vid Ive never seen before within rhe last few months and believe me Ive scoured and screened everything Philly. Yours is definitely one worth watching...I knew there were a bunch of mills taken down in the Wissy but I never knew there were other Inn/Saloon like places like Valley Green Inn along the Roxboro side...although Ive always wondered what some of those foundations were for. Youve got great pics, a real pleasure to watch. Thanks!

That's a drawing of what would be "the woman in the wilderness" It was a spirit the Kelpius group was waiting for in the woods in the 1600's. You can see the segment it's part of at: 10:47 of click the link here. Also that a robe she is wearing not blonde hair.
