Jonas Isacsson himself responded to this video under my post in the dedicated Roxette facebook fan-page, and he wrote "Good video Sergei working out the riffs. We often doubletracked the riffs to make them pop out a little more, it's not a 12-string on 'The Look', the riff is overdubbed in 3 different octaves, played on a Larrivee´ guitar."
I'm not a guitar player, but it's great to finally hear the truth about how they got that sound. I'd love to see him or Per do a breakdown with the original recordings to isolate those parts! Thanks 😊
@@grabasandwich Thanks! Yes, that would be a great present for all fans! I saw a video where Per breaks down the look song a bit, it was super interesting and fun to listen to those stories behind that legendary song.
Hi Sergei, Love the video! I do have to add that the engineers and producers were probably essential to creating the intricate and polished sounds on Look Sharp. Think of names like Anders Herrlin, Alar Suurna and Clarence Ofwerman. I remember reading somewhere on Facebook they did about 8 layers for 'The Look', and in the record sleeve of Look Sharp, Anders mentions them using a mix of clean and distorted guitars for 'The Look'. Also on 13:24 of this 'Look Sharp' making of (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OG9ico7uGlU.htmlsi=rDcUhUG3ykEfKZiK) you can hear the guitars without the octave on top. I think a video with the producer and engineers where they go into the technical side of making the album, would not only be amazing for Roxette fans, but to any musician, as the sounds they put on tape making that album are not only timeless, but also extraordinary for today's standards!
@@imarkarovic976 thank you very much for the info and link! Never seen that before. I absolutely agree that sound engineers did a magic here (and in many other songs). Despite the song is great by itself, I never heard that Roxette sounded close to recording on concerts with this songs. It suggested me that there should be some magic done during recording.
It was about time someone on RU-vid dedicated a tutorial video to the talented Mr. Isacsson from Roxette. He will be on the new album too. Staffan Astner, who did the guitars on Marie's solo albums is very good too.
@@SergeiVlassov : Yes, with Dea Norrberg and Helena Josefsson, who did backing vocals on their latest records as well as live. Don't remember if he will release it under the name PG's Roxette or just Roxette. It's coming out in autumn, I think. Edit: will come out as PG’s Roxette. First single in June.

Great, as some songs don't have proper guitar tabs on the internet! Some more songs with nice guitar parts which don't have tabs: Church of your heart (picking intro) My world, my love, my life (picking intro) 7twenty7 intro (both final recording and demo) Don't believe in accidents (solo) Dressed for success (riff) (I have figured this out myself but this riff is not well spread) Dangerous (demo feb 11th 87') Things will never be the same (intro) All songs available on Spotify/RU-vid
Thanks for the video! As a fellow die hard Roxette fan I think you nailed it with most of the riffs! Jonas Issacson at the time he joined Roxette was considered one of the best guitar players in Sweden. For example, when Europe were looking for a new guitar player he was a top candidate. That intro riff for The Look, the song that broke them through in USA even before the single was released there, is his creation and for that part, in my humble opinion, Jonas is massively responsible for the international success that Roxette has achieved. After 2001 he was playing on and off with Roxette as Christoffer Lundquist of Brainpool, who initially joined the band as a bass player, eventually took over the lead guitar role. There's no doubt that Cristoffer is great musician and I enjoy what he does with Roxette but I think the songs recorded without Jonas did lose a lot once his ingenious guitar work was no longer there. They had another great guitarist, Mickael "Nord" Andersson, who joined them for Crash! Boom! Bang! Tour. I do recommend to check Live in Johanessburg 1995 show, that was officially released, or Live in Moscow 1995, that was televised in the country. They are both freely available on RU-vid. If you like what Jonas did, you will definitely enjoy what Nord brought to Roxette's live performance, as he added that full-throttle-devil-may-care-proper-rock'n-roll component, that took these songs to the whole new dimension. You would be surprised to see another guitarist playing leads on the same stage with Jonas, but it did actually work very well! After watching these shows, you will change your opinion as you will see that Roxette were in fact quite cool live rock band! Anyways, thanks again for the video, it made my day!
Thanks a lot! Didn't know about Nord! Will certainly check those live shows! I only heard few live versions of Roxette songs and noticed as well that live version is more rock tnan records. What is your favorite Roxette live show to check?
Thanks, Sergey! I would say that these two are my personal favourites. I haven't watched them for a while so will have to watch again to see which one I would choose between the two, but from the memory I'd probably go for Moscow. However official Crash! Boom! Live DVD has more songs, so more fun! Like I said it is freely available on RU-vid. After the show in Moscow they didn't tour for six years, the next tour took place in 2001 and had a new band. I went to see them live and by that time they already had enough chart hit singles to fill the complete show so it was more pop. I know you are into electric guitar, but if you are also interested in acoustic sets, do check out their MTV Unplugged concert, again it is fully available from RU-vid. Jonas has completely reworked guitar parts for few songs like The Look, Hotblooded, Cry and they sound amazing in their acoustic versions. Also some brilliant piano parts from Clarence Ofwerman, their keyboard player and producer, without whose input, Per admits, they wouldn't be where they are now.
Jonas isacsson even wrote solos for those guitarists so they could show off on stage, because he was too shy to do that himself. He talked about that on the Boxette. As good as Christoffer is both in the studio and live, Jonas is something else.
@@SergeiVlassov The Boxette is a dvd release of the classic Roxette concerts that were either previously unreleased (Room Service Tour, Stockholm concert) or only released in old video formats such as Láser disc or VHS.
Thanks for the video dude! Fully agree that there is some amazing guitar work in the body of music released by Roxette. Jonas Isaacson, who contributed a lot of the guitar work to their music, is a supremely underrated guitarist and in my mind right up there with the Landaus and Lukathers of this world
Thanks! Shame on me - I did not know Jonas before I made this video. Is there any other guitarist of such level in pop music? I heard Prince was really good guitarist, but I am not familiar with his works except couple of songs.
@@SergeiVlassov hmmm Andy Summers from the Police and Keith Scott from Bryan Adams Band come to mind as being amazing but underrated/eclipsed by the acts that they are associated with. I’m sure there are others… Could probably start a whole thread about this!😁
@@GATvsGAT Police and Bryan Adams are already fully "life bands", or how to say, ... life instruments, guitars are always (or mostly) there. But Roxette is often more like synth pop etc. Are there any similar band at all actually? :) Michael Jackson used guitars in some songs, but those were session musicians if I remember correctly (Van Halen, Slash). Nuno played Black Cat for Janet Jackson (amazing riff!), but again - as guest musician. Need to think something more... )

@@SergeiVlassov I'm from Brazil. I've always wanted to be a guitarist, but I'm a keyboard player. I've been a Roxette fan since 1986. I know all the songs. And you played a lot the same. Missed the solo of "Listen to your Heart". You were excellent!
@@edsongalvao7869 Thank you very much! I learned keyboards a bit as well, on some basic level, to use for songwriting. Sometimes I think that maybe I have chose a wrong instrument ) Keyboards (at least digital) do not have tuning issues, don't require string change etc ) Many advantages. Anyway, keyboards is my second love after electric guitars! P.S. Probably one day I'll make a video with Roxette solos, if I manage to play them good enough. Jonas is really very professional guitarist!
@@SergeiVlassov You should do a Part 2... Just a thought considering how good this video of yours turned out. I wish I could play an instrument, but I'm sure I'd be hopeless.
@@marox79 Thank you! Maybe next time I will try some solos, but I am not sure I can manage ) And why you are so critical about yourself? Not everyone can become a world level virtuoso, but everyone can rich the level of having fun with an instrument. I highly recommend! It is never too late to start!
The Look: I think Jonas Isacsson used a telecaster with the neck pickup ;) Joyride: and i think Jonas used his classic red "les paul" 😉Both 2 guitar appears on their making of film. Thank you!
The guitars on Surrender were probably courtesy of Mats MP Persson from Per’s other band, Gyllene Tider. The guitars on Neverending love definitely were Mats for sure.
@@SergeiVlassov I checked the PoP insert this morning. Mats MP on Neverending love. Jonas was responsible for the rest of the guitar work on that first album.
@@SergeiVlassov He is a genius I grew up listening to Roxette songs. I started to learn guitar when I was 40 so I'm really happy to be able to play these licks thanks to you. Keep up the good work.
@@alejandroluisviera1060 this is a best acknowledgement for me when someone finds my work useful! I am 41 and I re-discovered Roxette again, especially their guitar riffs, and now also my wife listens to them.
Thank you! If you have ability, please record a video with those missed notes. I am sure there some more inaccuracy in some of the other riffs as well.
I think you are adding alot of guitar parts that are just not there. I could be wrong. But just dont hear some of those parts. Seems alot more simpler on guitar. Even the writer mentioned he wanted the song to be more of a digital programmed keyboard song.
