Roxy were out of this world back then, seriously brilliant musicians, manzanera, Mackay, sadly no thunderstcks Paul Thompson. Still excellent , best version of thrill of it all I've ever heard , classic
Holy crap. Why have I not seen this until now? These guys were off the chain marvelous! Whether there were "party favors" being passed out backstage beforehand, I don't care. Roxy Music was on fire! 🔥🎷🎸🎶
Only just came across this. What a fantastic video. One of the best live Roxy performances on RU-vid. A superb version of this song, even though it was pretty old at this time. They definitely must have partaken of some pre-concert mood enhancer. Mind you Bryan Ferry looks a bit like Alan Partridge on ecstasy, he was always ahead of the times 😂
Worth seeing the whole hour Dortmund show. Opening with "The Bogus Man"!! How badass is that? This version of "Thrill" rocks, with Manzanera going wild at the end. Also great to see them perform "Jealous Guy" soon after John Lennon was killed, months before Roxy recorded their own famous version. Bryan Ferry is leaping around during this show. I'm not saying there was caffeine and Novocaine involved, but wow, a world away from their sedate Avalon tour.
Thank you for your kind comments. Just to be clear, "Jealous Guy" was recorded the day after Lennon was shot. I was in New York packing to go start rehearsing with them when the news came on TV that he had been killed. The next day (Dec. 9), I flew to London and the recording was made in Phil Manzanera's studio.
If you get to watch the whole of this concert, you'll notice that they're all playing like men possessed, especially The Emperor Himself (MacKay) who blows like the clappers on virtually everything whether the original had sax or not! Wonder what was available in the ol' changing room eh???Wonderful stuff...……..VIVA ROXY MUSIC!
If only those changing room walls could talk...what went on in the changing room stays in the changing room...no artist could produce this sensational energetic performance on caffeine & nicotine...it required something a little more er nasal...
I was 22 years old . Terrific and amazing Bryan has the shoulders of a Hero in that video!!! If I could I would listen to him all night long its again a kind of perfection. A new title for me I will never forget. What a rythm ! all I lust! What a voice and shape ! Bravo bravo Bryan and hello to Manzanera and McKey. 😈😈😈👍👍👍 I am realy emotioned by the voice of Bryan I love him even more with this show ! I am recovering my twenties too. Kiss 💋🙈👾🌹Kiss
The thrill of it all indeed!!! One of the most exciting pieces of music you could ever hear--the final jam is incredible. Roxy Music and Talking Heads are my favourite bands of the 70s and 80s. It's Beethoven, Mahler and Walton these days, rock is dead...
Truth be told, the impeccable Dave Skinner (keys) started the song at exactly the right tempo as rehearsed. It was played here just the way Bryan wanted it. The original had a fantastic groove but they wanted to do it a completely different way and the original approach didn't work at the new tempo.
If anyone ever believes this crew shared espresso coffee and cigarettes only as a lil' 'pick-me-up' before they took to the stage to produce sensational performances such as this...then think again. It came in lines...very long ones. And note the plural.
Great sound but funny how technology has changed. This was probably made on whatever was state of the art in 1980. Today your old cell phone shot better video. A blast from the past, thanks for posting.
I'm trying to find a performance of this around 75 where Ferry is in a black suit and Wetton stands right beside him. Damn youtube, things go missing alot.
Skip: Yeah! Like WTF?? Its a terrific performance except for missing bridges and the last repetitive annoying riff that Manzanera plays to death. Don't get me wrong, I love Phil and the boys, but that riff at the end just made me cringe and want to smash my laptop with a pick-axe!
That was a deadly line - up ... Tibbs .ex:Vibrator : and Manzanera free reign wailing; new juice was added went down well. Perhaps Marrotta on drums, great back-up to Paul.
@@kikiu2619 not sure, Wikipedia may list some of the session people on the roxy albums , this would be ca 1980 - 1982 , they may play on a some live albums , again check wiki
Some bohemian denizens of the rare pockets of taste during the decade from hell might feel you warrant castration for such a comment. However, I'm fascinated, in much the same way as viewing a documentary about post-war German guilt, in your opinion of this light blue Yuppie arrangement now. Culturally, it speaks like an SS uniform but in terms of line and cut, those dead Nazi tailors would puke.
In retrospect you can see that Ferry was nothing more than a pop singer! He wrote some good lyrics but he always wanted to be a mainstream pop star! (Look at his later stuff both with Roxy and solo!). Without Manzanera, Mackay and Thompson he would have sunk like a stone! Brian Eno did the best move by moving out!
Ha ha ha ha They would not have made it without Ferry The band are awesome Manzanero End Thompson McKay All brilliant musicians Would have still been influential Big without The ferry magic Singing Persona Charisma Songwriting Musical Directing Would not be Legends That they are Still are AlwYs Will be
