QUICK TIMING : 0:00 Intro & my rules for the Challenge / 5:05 Challenge categories / 6:39 1st version: Scotch whiskies only / 25:00 2nd version : World whiskies only
I was watching recently Roy’s LIVE show in his AQVAVITAE RU-vid channel with guests on the famous theme called « YOU CAN ONLY KEEP 5 WHISKIES Challenge », with here a bit different categories than the one I did before in my channel (hence Andrew’s challenge from Prestige Liquids WW RU-vid channel-link below after the presentation). I was wondering about doing an update of my video & played the game a bit doing some suggestions in Roy’s chat (one being immediately approved by Menno & everyone saw it), but the choice was tough, so I had to think longer about this. Also, as Roy’s challenge was about Scotch whiskies only (even if some guests went beyond that), I considered why not play the game for a first selection with Scotches & then suggest a second one which would be devoted only to World whiskies ? So here it is, with a triple challenge for me, the third one being not picking whiskies I did choose for the previous (Andrew’s) challenge video…And on top of that, I couldn’t help myself picking several runners-up (in total 25 whiskies are mentioned here) & I am tasting there quickly a very rare whisky. I hope you’ll find it interesting.
Disclaimer/Rules : The choice was tough, but, as I don’t do editing & had to try the whiskies several times, it had to contain only bottles of whiskies from my collection, not samples. It means also that I can’t take responsability of viewers possible disappointments if the batches of the whiskies they can find after having watched my video are not as good as mine. I hope you understand it. Also, in order not to give away too much before you watch the video, bottles details will be available through their Whisky Base sheet, when they do exist (hence the number under the category) or one that is close to my bottle.

Hi Greg, very good choices. Mine would ( hard to choose though) be Perma shelf, Arran QC Crowd pleaser, Glenmorangie 10 Decadent pour, Benromach CS VIP pour AnConc 24 Attention grabber Balblair 1991 vintage, Slàinte Greg 🥃

haha nice choices, David, and this is no joke, your 3 last choices were in my mind too (the first two maybe as well, but I haven't tried the QC a lot since the rebranding), but as I talked about them often in the past & reviewed them already, I finally didn't picked them but like i said in the video I was spoiled for choice for many categories, especially in the Scotch challenge, Cheers & thanks for sharing your choices ! 👍🥃

Some surprising and very interesting choices there Greg! still need to really get to know Lindores, as I've only tried samples. That PC 16 seems absolutely delicious, but so do the others (that Glenallachie 😋) and i think we can't sing the praise of Armorik 15 enough, illustrated by the fact that I had it already on the table as I picked it independently from you too. Great fun to watch Greg!

Thanks a lot, Menno....Lindores wise I just tried at a retailer nearby a special release for France (full STR, 49,4 % abv) rather nice but sold at 75 € in very few places, so didn"t choose it & went rather for the Clydeside Stobcross, less expensive...Yep Warenghem hasn't finish to surprise us, looking forward for their first 18 yo hopefully soon (Spoiler : other distilleries here told me they will pull out their very first 18 yo at Whisky Live Paris in September...more later on). Also I wish that Celtic Whisky distillerie will release a 15 yo with not crazy price soon...Cheers & thanks for your support ! 🙏👍🥃

Wow Greg what a collection you have! I'm visiting Glen Moray in September and I'm so looking forward to trying their single cask expressions as Glen Moray really shines in those ones. Brilliant double list Greg, cheers!

Thanks, Sertug, yeah I think you should have a blast there...if it hasn't changed, take the tour with extra tastings (see my report about it on my website, I'll send you the link in DM), it includes some more tastings than core range, such as limited releases & distillery exclusives, and the good thing is that price asked for those bottle your own are often pretty reasonable, compared to, for instance Diageo distilleries ones...Cheers !

Sorry to burden a long video with a long comment! I always struggle with the rules for these lists (trying to pick NAS ones was the worst!). With the Permashelf Pour: I've only bought 'the same' (allowing for batch variation) bottle more than once in 11 cases and only Laphroaig 10 more than three times, so I suppose it has to be that. In my experience, there is no such thing as a Crowd Pleaser that everyone will like: I once took a bottle of Tantallan (mystery Highland/Speyside?) and a bottle of Laphroaig to a party and almost half the room preferred one and almost half preferred the other and there were a few people that didn't like either! Although I mostly drink with other Scotch drinkers, I am also a member of the British Bourbon Society and think I am one of the few to like both. If pressed I'll go Tullibardine Sovereign or 1792 Bottled-in-Bond. Maybe Woodford Reserve to split the difference? For the Decadent Pour, I could choose my birthday drams: Highland Park - The Dragon 1961 and Ledaig 42 year old Dùsgadh, though either of those could fit the next category instead. Or I could take things down a notch or two and go for Clynelish 18 TWE Retro Label. But having so many whiskies to choose from, decadent could be different every day for a year! The V.I.P. Pour depends very much on who that is: bourbon drinkers have been impressed by A.H. Hirsch Reserve 1974 16 year old, for instance, but I've also enabled at least three people to have a 40 year old whisky on their 40th birthday and pouring something from people's birth year can be quite impressive too! Or from a closed distillery (or several). (Oh, I now have at least one bottle each from 135 different Scotch malt distilleries, including 17 closed ones, most of which don't even exist to be revived.) The Attention Grabber is actually somewhat easier: my attention was certainly grabbed by the Diageo Special Release Port Dundas 20 year old from 2011 (I won't give my actual quotation of the time, as expletives were involved!) and that has been the case for others I've supplied it to as well. If rarity is a bar to inclusion, I'll often say Octomore x.3 instead.

Oh no Andrew that's great !!! 👌Interesting choices & questions....Laphie 10 from the 70s/80s are killers but too expensive (not a fan of current ones, and would prefer the Quarter cask every day, but its me). Haven't tried the Tantallan...Yeah Bourbon options for Crowd pleasers are a good call...Wow you're older than me, lol...Haven't tried those 2 x 1961 but I'm raving bout them, especially the Ledaig which I heard of (& stunning packaging too). For the VIP pour I agree it has to be adapted to the guest...(I have a list of vintages in my collection that i like to browse in when I have guests, but of course can"t have em all). Your choice sounds great & rare...Great collection you have (you beat me on both criterias lol-btw, it's so cool to hear that Dallas Dhu is going to be revived). Yeah i had the chance to try that beautiful Port Dundas & love it, its on the wishlist...Thanks a lot for sharing your choices, this is awesome ! Slainte ! 👍🥃

@@WhiskyLoversSociety ouh, tough, I have nothing from 1967 in my collection unfortunately...most of my collection is after 1978 & mostly bottled in late 1990s or 2000s...in fact I'd need a 1980 vintage to be able to do the junction between 1978 & 1998 (otherwise I have at least a whisky from each year between those dates, not too bad, lol).
