Wow, I wouldn't have recognized him. I discovered him through Blood Sweat and Tears' "New Blood" album. He was on the electric piano. May he rest in peace.

I've been a prodigious listener of Jazz for the last 40 years, often buying albums based on a track I listened to in the shop and anticipating it would reflect the rest of the album. When I heard Roy had passed I did a quick check knowing I had a couple of his albums (or so I thought) It turned out I had around 10 CDs, I revisited a lot of them and realized I hadn't given him the credit he deserved, he has become my favorite trumpet/flugelhorn player, his Ballards are particularly outstanding, his tone and phrasing are second to none.
Agree 100%! So sad, we lost that greatest musician! About respecting melody - it is one of my disappointments with many modern jazz musicians. They are very good improvisers, but many of them ignore melodies and take advantage of every second to show off!!
Street Hierarchy “Highly developed sense...” That is a misconception in itself. Understanding and respecting the melody itself while embellishing around it with balance is like “Catching light in a bottle” - either you understand how to do it or you don’t. There is no higher sense of musicianship than this.
I bought his first CD when I was in the service. I still revisit his music , especially his live performances. It got me through many lonely times. Still does. Rest in Power.
Amazing how the song is reharmonized and sounds completely different. Amazing also how Roy plays with the time, painting the sound with silence which makes the music literally breathing. Beautiful.
RIP Mr. Hargrove although I'm about 15 or 20 years older than Roy. Our birthdays were on the same day. I had the pleasure and honor of seeing him live at the the Blue Note in the Village in NYC Sept of 2017 while in the city visiting my daughter and son in law. It was a very special performance as he was there at least for a week maybe 2, 3 shows a night. My daughter got us seats right up front. Literally could have put my foot onstage. Man, it was an awesome night. I tried to speak with Roy briefly between sets but was unable to, I did speak with the band though. Such a talent, you will be missed my brother.
Larry Willis who composed the song entitled "To Wisdom, The Prize" is my favorite pianist. He has collaborated with various musicians such as Nat Adderly, Woody shaw and Blood, Sweat & Tears.
This song lends itself to the beautiful treatment heard here. Hargrove gets it just right -- pianist provides a colorful harmonic bed throughout. Couldn't help but think of Nat Cole, Freddie, and Miles all at the same time. Loved the transition to the next tune.
Its been 3 days, the passing of this man has been deeply saddening for me, such a great artist and he did jam sessions, taught etc... A great contributor to the music we love. I was lucky enough to see him live in Zürich 1 year ago to the month and it was some gig. Sounded so great live! RIP❤
Roy has left us a chunk of his musical spirit that we can always forever connect with him. Truly an artist that was " in service - playing for God" I am humbly grateful to have experienced you n your blessed gift. RIP 🙏🙏😍 Heavenly and never ever forgotten "Nature boy"
There are 3 trumpeters I considered my all time favorite and will remain so for a long time: Roy Hardgrove, Wallace Roney and Terrence Blanchard....RIP, Roy
I used to see Roy and the quintet every holiday week at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. He was scheduled for this year as well (2018) and I miss him already. He always delivered the groove and set me right for the new year.
If/when you ever have a chance to see any of the remaining jazz greats, don't pass it up. I was lucky enough to enjoy this live... and get some nice photos too. That's me down front at 4:09 and 7:12, taking photos. Seems like just yesterday. My wife and I fell in love with Newport because of the jazz festival and have been back for vacation six times since 2001. We were there a few weeks ago and, while we still love Newport, the jazz festival is not what it used to be. Great, true jazz artists like Roy Hargrove are really, really missed. RIP
He passed away on my birthday. I was driving from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and I heard the news. It was devastating. When I celebrate my birthday this year it will remain with me
Beautiful, beautiful playing. I just discovered him today and found him gone but will listen to more of him and his bandmates. His music and soul continues.
Happy Birthday Roy--October 16. I stopped going to live concerts because so many new "artistes" arrive looking as if they just rolled out of bed and sounding as if they are using their audience to practice on. Roy Hargrove seemed to respect both his audiences and the compositions. He always lets the melody be identifiable, and his playing is a mini-master class in how to execute, support and sustain notes. Thank you Roy. Hope you are in peace.
Very sad with ur lost , Rest in peace , happy that I met and we laughed together and I told you were a master . And you said , Do u think so ? Rest in peace master .
🔥🔥🔥Into Infinity....and Beyond..may you rest in Divine Love...where your shine was imparted from...your physical has drifted out from these earthly dimensions.. (oh yes! )..but your exquisitity🎺 will be ours until this 3rd ball from the sun blows away..rest now sweet prince your session has been solid ..we dig!🔥🔥🔥
A modern classic performance. Maybe a week later, I was hosting the 13 year old son of a Japanese friend for a week of summer vacation. I took my friend's son and my son to NYC for some sightseeing, which included my and their first trip to the top of the World Trade Center. The kids took some goofy selfies with a camera. Then the world changed. Documenting jazz greatness for the price of advertising is one of the great attributes of youtube. :-)
there are times when you want to paly the melody exactly like it is written and times you want to add different colors.....like especially when you study music and do have ideas....question of choice; playing live you may do it exactly as written in some choruses....then maybe improv.; ad lib.; in others and mix....showing off x playing the ideas that come into your mind......infinity....that is what music is to me!!!!
