Everyone's body isn't meant to move up in weight classes. You can respect roy's courage and bravery all day, but certain fighters need to know their place and stay in it no matter how boring it seems to reign in 1 division. He's that type of fighter who should've stayed where he dominated at in the 90's. Roy and Shane were the only ones on my favorite boxers list during that entire decade. I'm glad I lost HBO in 1998 before roy's decline in the early 2000's. I thought he retired undefeated until I recently saw his last devastating losses. He reminds me of ali and leonard from the aspect that they all should've quit while they were ahead instead of sticking around to be beaten by younger hungrier fighters.

Roy Jones Jr was that special case where you had a boxer with horrible fundamentals but with superhuman speed and power. I am sure his opponents early and late in his career knew he had the horrible tendency of leaving his hands down past his waist. In Roy's prime even if his opponent saw the opening there was no way to reach it without having to contend with Roy's incredible speed and power. I predicted before he lost his prime that once he lost that speed he was going to be in real trouble. Once Roy lost his athleticism those bad habits in the ring became his demise. There were other bad habits but it never really mattered because he was too damn fast for anyone to capitalize on it. I still think that as far as athleticism goes Roy Jones Jr was gifted way more than your average human being. He beat both prime James Toney and Bernard Hopkins. One last interesting thing about Roy is that he is a boxing head. Anybody who knows boxing can tell that he has a high boxing IQ just from listening to his commentating but the weird part is he never took the time to get a solid boxing foundation.

There was internet of course, but not instantaneous cell phone internet like we've had for the last 15 years or so. Someone at work told me Jones had been KO'd in the 2nd round, I refused to believe him. I couldn't immediately verify it by looking at my phone, so I had to wait until I got home to check, and sure enough, I saw it on the sports ticker..."Tarver def Jones by 2nd round knockout". I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Sportcenter talked about it, but being that it was on HBO, didn't show the actual KO. I think I finally saw the footage a few days later on some shitty dial up stream. Point is...well, not really sure what the point is. Just something I thought about upon watching this video.

A boxer must retire by himself. Only his trainer can say "Please stop or I don't want to train you anymore. You have the money, you have the health. It is time to go home now." If he has weight problems to stay in his category with the age , there is danger to go in the next category because there is young natural boxers for it and you will decrease some of capacities.

Wow...that last KO was scary. Roy had a nice career as an HBO color guy but the most recent video I saw of him was very sad. These late in his career knockouts sealed his fate as a punch drunk former champion. Yes his inhuman speed early in his career kept him from ever being hit clean but the Tarver fight broke him. Something was never the same in RJJ both psychologically and physically. His slide from unbeatable to "opponent" was very quick. In the Johnson fight, he had nothing...absolutely nothing. Glenn took command of that fight from the start and Jones did so little punching you knew something was terribly wrong. Lots of pundits credited this to the weight fluctuations and coming down from heavyweight and some of it, no doubt, was due to that but Johnson was so dominant there had to be more than that affecting RJJ. One sad video!

The 1st Tarver fight exposed him, after he gave all kinds of excuses. If you watch the beginning of the 2nd Tarver fight, when Tarver asks him... "do you have any excuses tonight Roy?"...and Roy has nothing to say back but just looks down. At that point, you can tell that he has already lost the fight.

To all those saying Jones was past his rime when he started losing. That may be true but let's not forget he fought Felix Trinidad who never fought at a weight above 160 lbs at a catch weight of 170 lbs. Trinidad had been retired for two and a half years and was an old man by then, at 35 years old. After Tarver KO'd him, Jones never beat anyone of note, except for an old long retired Trinidad. And if you examine Jones' record, at middleweight He beat Hopkins, obviously a good fighter. Most of the other defences were not against great opponents. At 168, he beat Toney. Who was a good fighter, but undisciplined as far as preparation goes. He beat Vinny Pazienza, a former lightweight champion. There are really no other opponents of note. I suppose you could make a case for Eric Lucas, who did win a world title later in his career. At 175, he beat Mike McCallum, who was a very good fighter, but McCallum was 40 years old when they fought. He beat Virgil Hill. That's not that many big name fighters he fought. Most of the rest of his opponents were not what most people would consider quality opposition. After that he moved up to heavyweight, so in his prime he didn't really fight too many greats, did he ?

I think this was a combination of things. First and foremost when he beat Ruiz, I honestly believe he accomplished all he wanted in the ring. From that point, he was just going through the motions. He certainly lost his reflexes when he went back down to 175, but you could tell his heart just wasn’t in it anymore. Go to a full broadcast of his fight with Johnson. Watch his facial reactions throughout. You’ll see what I mean.

I don't understand people who said RJJ has no boxing fundamentals but, at the same time, claimed he is the most talented. RJJ actually had the best sets of boxing skills and basics. He also had so many incredible strategies and tricks as this shows in his fight with Calzaghe when he tricked and knocked down him in the first round. The weight reduction from 199 lb to light heavyweight (178 lb) is also very common for boxers around the world. The only suspicious thing is that he was so mentally weak after the first fight with Tarver. It seemed like he eventually faced with his true kryptonite. He seemed to lose all confidence afterwards.

Roy Jones Jr was great when he had his speed and athletics. That was his defense as much as his offense in his boxing style of usage. But after he went heavyweight and then back to light heavyweight = 2 weight class jumps, he lost most of it and suddenly he was almost immediately calculated and exposed in the ring. Now all could see repeatedly that Jones Jr did not have a great chin and that he had a poor guard and overall not well in his defense. Now near any experienced puncher could take him out. Worst was/is that he never could adapt his own boxing style to compensate for his loss of speed and athletics like say his rival Bernard Hopkins did or old man George Foreman, who became greater at older stages of respective career in the ring.
@kennetowright6126

He only had ONE flaw; it was NEVER exposed due to his ALLTIME superior talent. That flaw is Roy Jones had a glass jaw, plain & simple. If he had retired after the John Ruiz fight @ heavyweight, Roy would have went down in history among the Ali's & Ray Robinson's!!!!! He LOST lots of energy losing weight to fight Tarver @ Light Heavyweight and it showed in the fight. He should have made Tarver move up to Heavyweight . Roy was obviously exhausted and moved slow by his standards early in the fight. Even in round 1, Roy was moving super slow. Eventually caused Roy to get caught with that left by Tarver. Tarver always fought at a high level against Roy anyway. All that time, we had NEVER saw Roy get hit on the button like that. . . he was normally too quick. He ALWAYS had a glass jaw. His subsequent fights after that proves it. 3 more losses by KNOCKOUT. Probably the most tragic end to any sports legend's career. Someone else said it in the comments. . . MAN, only if he'd retired after Ruiz??? He literally had a GOAT argument (going all the way to Heavyweight) even against Ali. But that lost to Tarver!!!!!! Took Roy from, as my country cousin from Alabama say, Sugar to shit instantly. Roy STILL an alltime great even after all that, but again, he was looking at GOAT status after that Ruiz fight.
