Holy shit, this man's playing is beautiful! Not only is his speed astonishing, but it seems to only serve his beautiful phrasing. Definitely a true original.

All we have to do is listen to Roy's accuracy, he is utterly astonishing. This is one of the most astonishing instrumental albums of all time imho. We'll be listening to it for decades from now. Not failing to note the brilliance of Atma Anur, he found an extra gear for this album! (Steve Kindler also.What a treat!).

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer you can understand it when you realise Roy is owning every aspect of the acoustic and electric guitar universe like no other ever has, NoneOther!. Every aspect of his technique is extreme, legato to alternate picking but he also plays, writes and produces in all genres, makes his own signature picks and modifies a Vigier by lopping off the bottom horn! Who even does that?!!! Roy Freakin Marchbank. Thats bound to sicken even the most established guitarists, it shouldn't but you can see how it could!

I did not know him so I checked him out on youtube and Holy Moly he's fast - some of his music reminded me of the player piano music of Nancarrow and the Synclavier music of Zappa with these complex and incredibly fast lines.

Roy is like a rare creature that many don't even have the capacity to understand what he's creating. They only hear the slower melodic sections they can make some kind of musical sense of. Its also unfair to judge him or anyone on one solo, you have to take in the richness and depth of the compositions. So far The Cream is my favourite off the album but that'll probably change next week, or even today! Roy is the underground guitarist that everyone knows about but rarely mention because he is untouchable.

Subscribed, Roy is a force. He's his own man. I met him at Jason Becker Not Dead Yet in the Netherlands with Atma Anur, but I have been listening to him for a long while before then. Great to see this release. I'd certainly recommend it to any fusion fan. I'm not sure how his brain is wired because the fast sections are just insane.
@AndyEdwardsDrummer
@AndyEdwardsDrummer 2 года назад
I think he has rewritten the book in terms of picking, it's a completely new approach. His legato is pretty insane too. Can't think of any guitarist who has innovated in both those areas.

Hi Andy. To be honest after watching a couple of RM videos on RU-vid I thought I was going to hate ‘NoneOther’ but I really enjoyed it. Some beautiful compositions and great guitar; although at times I felt that some of the splurges of super fast guitar detracted from the music. All’n’all good stuff.

Just bought it from Bandcamp and have given it a first listen - brought back great memories of when I first heard Vai's Flexable and then a couple of years later first hearing Satriani's Not of this Earth as while they both could shred and were /are two of the best, they also had great tunes and a bit of variety. Although I've only listened once I know I'm going to really like this one, becuase I was listening whilst tryng to do some work but kept having to stop what i was doing to listen to what I was hearing. I've seen some of his RU-vid stuff and he came across as a very likeable down to earth guy, no sense of him showboating or being arrogant about his ability and I think that comes through in the music - he knows he's fast and accurate but he doesnt rely on it.

After your "Guitarists you should listen to" video, I started checking out Roy on youtube and watched some of his videos and I was not only blown away but also it felt reminiscent of Shawn Lane's virtuosity. Later I realized, He was featured on Shawn Lane's channel. :) Also The Tritone fascination's first track, Kaiser Nancarrow was a tribute to Conlon Nancarrow. :) Great video as always. I remember reading where someone asked Vernon Reid if Shawn Lane was the fastest guitarist in the world (or fastest Reid knew of, or something very close to that). And Vernon Reid’s answer was “He’s the fastest good guitarist….” I love that. You’re saying something like that about Roy, elaborating heavily on what “good” is in his case.

Good luck with The Law Of Three. Special. Allan Holdsworth scared the hell out of me, Roy just makes me laugh. Truly. He's not a shredder. He's a musician.

I'll have to have a listen to this when I get time, I trust your knowledge. Thanks for doing this, I love discovering new music 👍 After initial listening, it's OK but some of the guitar sound I have a problem with. It's me, I know but I hate the guitar synth sound. That's what turned me off Holdsworth, the more he used it, the more I hated it. I just can't stand that sound, which is a shame. I know it's just me but it's not for me. We can't all like the same things, that would be a boring world. I'm a bit disappointed though, I was looking forward to something new but not for me. 😭
@AndyEdwardsDrummer
@AndyEdwardsDrummer 2 года назад
To my ears I did not hear that much synth work on the album. But he has posted some breath control guitar synth work that is truly original. But you are correct that his tone is very individual. Like Holdsworth, he is an originator tonally, and thirty years ago I remember Holdsworth getting similar push backs. It might worth with Roy really giving it a few listens, and start with the acoustic stuff first.

There is nothing new about speed. It has been around since the birth of music. Roy has a bit more of it, that’s all and it is impressive but it is just a tool in the musicians box. If I have one gripe with my favorite guitar player(AH) it is: too much speed.
@AntonyRG1
@AntonyRG1 2 года назад
Progressive metal became immensely boring because metal guitarists wanted to play faster and faster and faster. Is jazz fusion heading in the same monotonous direction?
@AndyEdwardsDrummer
@AndyEdwardsDrummer 2 года назад
I hoped I made this point in the video, but all the great innovators in jazz and fusion have pushed the velocity envelope. But my point is if you listen to Roy you will hear a load of other really interesting things going on too. Jazz Fusion will get monotonous through musians just regurgitating the past.

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Great player but there will always be critics where you dabble in frequently mimed videos (which Roy calls 'playthroughs'), suspicious MIDI tones for passages which are much faster and cleaner than his raw, unprocessed guitar playing, and outlandish claims regarding his own speed (33 notes per second legato Roy? Really? 16th notes at 495bpm when all your actual playing looks a lot more like 280bpm? GTFO).
