My shredder could not grasp the paper. I read a few things about oiling, blowing air & using reverse. I had already cleared a paper jam & pulled all the small paper pieces out. With it unplugged, I spayed the cutters with canola oil & wiped off the excess. Then I sprayed the cutters with canned air duster. I turned the unit on & moved the forward reverse button back & forth. There was a bang & explosion (ball of fire). It immediately went out. I quickly pulled the plug. I have singed hair, eyebrows, & eyelashes.

I bought one a few weeks ago and it is an awesome shredder. It seems to have a lot of torque and can chew up those pre-approved credit card offers like nobody's business. I need to clean the cutters now. It's seen a lot of use and managed to get rid of a huge pile of stuff that I was going to burn. $112@ Amazon. Great deal.

It's big, heavy, and powerful, and chewed through a lot of stuff today It gets very hot after a while 450-500 watts was the average for a lot of sheets at once, over 1800 watts surge when starting a few of the big shreds. Serious power I have the 1840MX though

Myy Royal shredder Worked well but suddenly began to make a thumping noise with a great thump when paper is inserted. It sounds like something is damaged in the cutter blades. It will work ok in reverse but does not clear up the problem. Any suggestions?

I'm afraid I can't help much there. One time I had an issue where I had put too many pages at once. I just had to go from forward to reverse a couple of times then run a single piece of paper through it a few times, but it was just a little jammed. However if it's more than that, it might not be fixable...

there is one more big use for a paper shredder. I had a Persian cat . before he got bacterial infection from the sand which I used in litter box . now I am using shredded paper as litter material. advantage of paper is it will ubsorb moisture from poop and urine and it is almost safe and contains no bacteria or fungus . also it easily decompose or u can flush them in toilet bc shredded paper are safe

Nice shredder. Best value out there. Cheaper at warehouse clubs than at Amazon. Buy in club, or get free shipping.

After 3 month my 140 turned off while shredding junk mail. I waited an hour and restarted it to a plume of electrical burn out smoke. No abuse just simple shredding of 4 to 8 sheets.

I have been using mine a royal 805 MC and wont shred opened it and took any maybe clogged took it all put and shook it and started now wont start

I will be picking up a Royal 1610x and have not seen anything like it by the company. Commercial unit says 10 sheets at a time or 16 sheets continual like the old connected printing paper of dot matrix years.. do you have any information on this beast? What I could expect for it being used?

I don't have any info or experience with that particular product. If it works as well as mine does, it should be good though.

What kind of maintenance does a shredder need? Do they every need oiling?

I have heard of some people oiling their shredders, but I've never oiled this one in 4+ years. That being said I have a home office so I don't shred a ton of stuff every day, but the manual didn't say anything about oiling it that I recall.

Mine had a problem with the door. I could not remove the basket to empty it. I brought tools to bear, but no success. Made for a short life. I am exchanging it.

Bummer - I found early on that if it was overly full, I couldn't just open the door straight out - I would need to shimmy it in a way that would clear the shredded material from the top - but of course, that's my fault for being lazy and letting it get overfull before emptying it. But it's still working great for me!

My Royal 1200X was full & I removed the shred - but now only the reverse works. Cant get it to go forward and shred. Any suggestions?

Make sure it's NOT plugged in. Power on/off to release any held charge, just to be safe, then with the bin out check to see if there's paper stuck up inside the blades. Occasionally because I waited too long to empty it, I have to reach up there and clear out the blades because paper backed up and got stuck in there. But of course, BE CAREFUL, and make sure it's NOT plugged in before even considering doing that!

I tried shredding 3-4 pieces of paper and it overheated and got jammed

That's strange. I still own this (6 years running) and just used it this past weekend to shred a ton of old stuff - it had no problem with 10-12 sheets at a time or old credit cards.
