Debating on whether you should go with 14T, 15T or 16T front sprocket on your Royal Enfield 650??
In this video, I will be explaining the benefits of each and comparing the stock 15 teeth with Hitchcock’s 16 teeth front sprocket.
My ultimate goal with 16T is to get more top end, drop revs at high speeds so it’s increases the longevity of the engine. 16T still performs excellent on hill climbs, so no need to shift the gears as climbing and the lack of pickup is not noticeable at all. All in all, happy with this mod for what it costs.

If your looking for a smoother , progressive less of and on /off or choppy throttle then the 16 tooth will be a winner for you. I've run them for 21000kms now. Everytime i get on a stock bike i feel they feel stressed ,more choppy in throttle response. And the smoothness of the 16 tooth spoils youm

Couldn't agree more, I felt the same with 16T, the bike feels less stressed at higher speeds and overall smoother ride.

Thanks for the video. I just installed a 17T front sprocket on my GT650. Now I can more comfortably cruise the highways around me. Since the speedo is off if I hold 80mph on the speedo (75mph according to gps) and my RPMs are now 4500 instead of the 5400 they used to be at.
@GrewalsGarage
@GrewalsGarage 4 месяца назад
Glad it worked out for you! 17T does loosen the chain a bit so be sure to adjust the chains slack accordingly to the diameter of the new sprocket.

The speedo won't be off because the pickup is on the front wheel. Changing sprockets won't do anything to throw the speedo off.

Pease check and recheck if the chain tension is same all around. Mine wasn't so and I've paid the price as my chain became partly more streched out and less streched out over time . The authorised service centre folks but the blame on wrong instalation and anyways i have to foot the bill. But I'm ok as the gas mileage I've saved with this mod has more than paid for the the chain and sprocket times over considering the price of fuel here.
@GrewalsGarage
@GrewalsGarage Год назад
Thanks for watching, sorry to hear that, the right amount of tension on the chain is really crucial as that determines the life of the chain and the sprocket teeth. The tension shouldn't be too tight or too loose as that will also introduce the chopping noise. Its's a good idea to get an alignment done anytime you take off the tire, this is why I use the measuring trick to straighten the wheel as much as possible. Glad your liked the mod and it definitely helps with fuel efficiency.

Fitting slip on will reduce initial torque due to difference in back pressure? What's the reality.
@GrewalsGarage
@GrewalsGarage Год назад
Thanks for watching @jyothismgeorge6013. I wont get into much engineering details but there are few things that cause back pressure mainly is how the pipes are designed and the valves control back pressure. You can check out my other video for exhuast here, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sjtr2C-BgYI.html You don't loose the torq yet gain more as the free flow system breathes better and if your just replacing mufflers than you don't need to worry about anything cuz headers have restricted catz build in.

Thanks for watching elwood62! Honestly the 650 is geared just perfectly whether your doing city rides or curvy hill climbs. The upgrade is beneficial if your looking to drop the RPMs in each gear and to get more top end for freeway speeds. But even if you upgrade the teeth count it won’t sacrifice hills climbs. The reason I did this update to drop the RPMs and for longevity of the engine. Yes, worth it all the way!

Excellent presentation. Simple, easy to install as one of my Xs650's unlike my 650 BSA and Triumph units. I swapped the front and rear sprockets on the Xs units and it made a great improvement on lowering the engine RPM's and smoothing the ride overall. I plan on distance touring on my Interceptor and after I make this post I'll call my RE dealer and order a 16-tooth sprocket. Thank you :)

Thanks for watching Motormike B! I actually wanted to recommend you the 17T that is now available for GT and Interceptor, it will make a great touring machine, however you will need to get a longer chain to fit the 17T. The 16T is perfect for my style but I feel like if I was using mine for touring to cover freeway miles I would use 17T with longer chain (101 pitch) but I think only 102 pitch chain is available with stock rear (38T) sprocket.

Thanks for watching Robbie! Sometimes I have to remind myself to slow down with the mods and only update the things that makes sense. The stock 15T is far capable and designed to handle the torq thru out the hill climb but of course selecting the right gear for the speed and the amount of elevation of hill all depends upon the rider! If you ride with a pillion on hills then I would recommend 14T that will help with the torq, but 14 will increase revs and decrease top end. Glad I could help, do you have an interceptor or continentalGT?

I have an INT650 and live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. I ride the backroad twisties and went with the 16 tooth. I don't experience any noticeable loss of acceleration and I don't have to shift as much, I can pretty much live in 3rd gear.
@GrewalsGarage
@GrewalsGarage Год назад
Thanks for watching Jon, the torq band for these 650s is constant whether your in 3rd or 4th, it will pull on the hill like no tomorrow. Majority of my riding Is also on curvy hill back roads. 4th gear is the sweet spot for me, usually hitting 40-45mph on those backroads. However, 16teeth does give me more topend speed and lowers the RPM when cruising on the freeway! Glad your liking the 16teeth, will improve longevity of the engine with low rpms!
@jonyoung6253

hi can you explain the rpm of 14 teeth. Because i am looking for more fun to ride than top speed
@GrewalsGarage
@GrewalsGarage 2 месяца назад
Hi, 14 teeth is more for torq where on higher speeds the rpms will increase. I would recommend 14th teeth if you’re building your motorcycle as an off road/touring machine, with luggage, gear, mud terrain tires and climbing off road trails, somewhat like a scrambler. 14th teeth will give you the torq to climb those hills. Hope that helps!

@GrewalsGarage
@GrewalsGarage 2 месяца назад
If your referring to the 4 speed motorcycles, those have a different torq delivery. These 650 engines stock 15th teeth is more than capable to tackle any hills. I would recommend to consider what you want to use it for but yes 14th teeth will not hurt in anyways will give you more punch when launching and climbing will be torqy.

Which sprocket will give me the longest chain life?
@GrewalsGarage
@GrewalsGarage 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching. The sprocket teeth will not determine the longest chain life. The teeth count just changes the gear ratio, torq, RPMs, and high end speed. To get the most out of your chain, you need to make sure the rear wheel is straight and aligned properly so there is no stress on either side of the chain. Second, the tightness of the chain... chain should not be too loose or too tight as that will damage the O-rings in the chain and will cause play. Too tight will stretch the chain over time and too loose can cause damage to the sprocket teeth. Lastly, regularly lubricate the chain for longevity. Hope this helps!
@joshuathomas8529
@joshuathomas8529 11 месяцев назад
@GrewalsGarage yes this helps. I have hurd that the 650 super meteor has been having chain stretch issues. Has this been the case with the interceptor? How many miles should you get out of a chain if properly maintained?
@GrewalsGarage
@GrewalsGarage 11 месяцев назад
@joshuathomas8529 that’s probably due to how it’s tightened. A well maintenance chain should last at least 15k miles or more depends on how regularly you inspect it. Over all the bikes I owned, I never replaced the chain. I have roughly 10k on my 500cc and the chain is still like brand new. Another way you can check is, by checking how much play you have in chain or each individual links. Sometimes the o rings require replacement but that’s more for high torq bikes.
@joshuathomas8529
@joshuathomas8529 11 месяцев назад
@GrewalsGarage sounds good. I really appreciate the advice. I will ensure proper chain tension and lubrication on my super meteor when I get it. On a side note, the 250 honda nighthawk I just sold when I got it the chain was stretch stretched and I had to replace it. It had around 11,000 miles when I got it. The chain must not have been properly maintained.
