Hi Stuart, have taken delivery of my new Interceptor in the last few days and decided (partly because of the wet weather), to fit the sump guard and engine bars before I took it out. I used both of your videos relating to these and found them extremely helpful; thank you very much. As you said, various tools were required, including a number of different extensions due to the location of parts on different sides of the bike. I took my time and felt proud of myself when it was all completed; to quote you, 'if a job's worth doing............' Loving the bike! Cheers, Andy
I really like that you speak slowly in all your videos, and really really appreciate the absence of fake hype which we see in the majority of motorcycle videos (thinly disguised promotion). Thank you.
Thanks for the video instruction. On my 2021 Interceptor I did have to take the right side bar off and re-route the clutch cable over the top of the bar. It was too tight going under the bar. Even with reinstalling the bar, this only took me about 45 minutes. I am a total novice DIY mechanic. At 68 years old, the RE instructions microscopic print were useless.
Just bought a gt and these videos have been so helpful. I really appreciate the time and effort. Invaluable resource for someone with limited experience like myself.
As a new owner of the RE 650 INT (Chrome) I cannot thank you enough for all of your outstanding videos. Your videos are very thoughtful, thorough and well done. Please keep them coming!
I sold my 2012 Suzuki GSX1250FA (Bandit) & bought a 2019 Interceptor & I love it, it's a riot to zip around on. One of the many impressive point to owning a Royal Enfield is how easy it is to work on & add accessories. Thanks for the great videos to help.
I have these installed on my bike and the bike tipped over because I didn't extend the side stand fully. These do a good job and not a scratch in the engine. The only parts that took a hit were the exhaust tip(minimal scratch not even visible), and bar ends.
Thanks, Stuart. Interesting matter about the leg protectors. I dropped my bike today and bent the rear brake pedal. Dang! I'll be getting the compact bars and a torque wrench and thanks to your confidence building video--I'll install them.
Never thought I actually consider buying a RE but that's where I am , loving your straight forward no nonsense videos , my Gixer-750 days maybe numbered , who'd of thought ! 🤔
Greasing the bolt bore is a good thing. Just to keep water out. I would do the same for the short bolts as well. Magnificent fly over shot at 9:17 even being overcast. Beautiful area that.
Your case polishing makes this work well visually. I agree on your corrosion avoidance with the bolts - probably will also need to keep the chrome bars polished. And hats off to your Summer hair cut. 👍
I wish they made a similar style for the Boneville family. I have a set on my street cup and ofcourse something that it is good to have and not need than otherwise. Another great video! Thank you Sir!
Will be looking to fit some on mine when it arrives. Liked the intro where you talked about the old bars, my brother had some fitted to his Honda CD175 by the dealer and had problems riding it home. He fell off on a corner and when we looked at the bike couldn’t stop laughing. The dealer hadn’t used the correct mounting points but had attached the rear bars to the suspension mounts. Top and bottom so there was basically no rear suspension travel 🤣🤣
As I was installing the thru bolt(top)the tightening just stopped.I think the threading was too short whilst the bolt seemed a bit too long.I guess I'll put another couple of washers in or find a shorter bolt. Thank you Stuart for all of the information you share!
Nice engine guards. They've taken the 'just enough' route with them and I like it. On the subject of the sump guard: I wonder if MOTONE is working on a Defender series guard for the Intercepter. That would be great.
Hi Stuart, i managed to drop my interceptor at relatively low speed on a roundabout, first mishap in 40 years of riding. Broken collar bone and 11 ribs, front and back. Surprisingly although it ruined clocks head light peg indicator and many other bits on the left side of my bike bars too, the engine cases were completely untouched so you may not actually need the engine protection. I do not recommend anyone else researches it the way i did but i thought my rather painful research could be useful to someone HA HA. Anyway on the strength of that i now have a 500 Classic and 650 GT all chrome... Beautiful bikes at a great price. No other brand for me now it seems.
@@Alex-io6ky sounds like a good idea, bit late for me. Its been 6 months so i am fairly well repaired don't know if i will ever be quit as i was, still a lot of crunching when i move. Shoulder and down my back. Has not put me off however and most importantly there is no discomfort while i am riding. One problem is here in Queensland Australia the weather does not encourage the wearing of a lot of sensible protective bike wear for most of the year.
On both the lower right and left side mounting bolts you only use one washer on the nut side, using both washers on each side only allow for half the bolt to screw into the nut.
Great helpful video , big of a concern with the paint , doesn’t look like there’s any primer , I would use a bit of grease behind the bar as well as the bolts keep the videos coming 👍
I agree about the debatable nature of these leg guards, but they have an aesthetic appeal to them too. I couldnt imagine my bullet 500 without the airfly guard!
Towards the end of the video there's a (drone version of a) tracking shot over beautiful fields and trees. It appears to extend to the horizon. Where and what is this area (if you know and don't mind sharing)? It's lovely.
The compact bars are the nicest one offered by Royal Enfield. The others would spoil the look of the bike, dealer already fitted this bar to the bike I bought. But they were black had them switch to the stainless one's. Cheers mate
I'm so torn between an interceptor and a Triumph street scrambler. Every time I see this bike on your videos it's making my decision harder. Keep up the good work, quality looking accessories especially if they are stainless.
@Anthony Price The correct solution to your conundrum is of course to buy both bikes. :) But get the Royal Enfield first; you'll learn a lot about what the Triumph does better, and worse without breaking the bank, then be able to make a far more informed decision as to whether the price of the Triumph is worth it or not.
@@MakoVette yes your right, buy both, however being married, and knowing my wife, she would question me buying 2 bikes that are so alike, also I'm already short of space in my garage, I already have, a WLA HD , 150ss vespa, 400 burgman and zzr1200 . That's not including my milling machine, lathe , welding equipment , bike ramp, tyre machine , paint scheme , tool boxes and compressor!!
I well remember the compulsory leg protectors fiasco. The transport minister at the time was a humourless nerdy little creep. I won't mention his name but the initials are PB for others as old as me. He was adamant this was going to happen but he was forced to back down. If i recall correctly he did not remain in post for long afterwards.
Another reassuring video Stuart and one which I will be referencing very soon. One question...what are your thoughts on the Hitchcocks triple engine bar? The fitment looks like it would be the same but I just wondered if you'd seen one in the flesh.
Thanx for the Video Someday I'll install that too. Plus the sump guard. And I'm thinking, if the front bracket of the sump guard is to be screwed on in the same place as the engine protection bar, is the screw long enough? I will see. If necessary, I just have to get longer screws from the hardware store.
Even I managed to fit this myself!! As for the torque settings, do i need to measure this with a torque wrench type tool or is tight enough good enough???
Your videos are invaluable. I live in the US and I bought the Intercepter 650 in Ravishing Red a few months ago. Getting the accessories over here is not that easy...I have to go to EBay for them. But these compact engine bars might be worth it. Stuart, did you take the tank pads off that you put on in the previous video because they didn't work out as expected? Thanks again for the great videos and tutorials! - Matthew
Would you suggest these compact Engine bars for Classic C5 over bigger butterfly leg guards? Need to know your opinion from experience. Thanks in Advance!
Love your vids stu. Would you consider an interceptor a suitable first bike for doing slow speed handling skills? If so, what lever protectors are suitable for it? Considering a 650 as a first bike but happy to go for the himmy if more experienced riders suggest I should take it slow. I'm 6'1 and 84 kg (if that matters)
Hi Stuart noticed you fitted the bars over the clutch cable , I am sure my instructions said the cable over , having said that my cable clip keeps coming off . Think I will try below the bars
stuart fillingham Hi Stuart, to be honest I just fit them at first without looking at the instructions , so looked at the instructions last night and they don’t mention the routing of the clutch cable .I agree with you I don’t understand why they are printed so small. Changed the routing last night and took opportunity to lube the clutch cable as well,as it appeared to be dry as well.fitted the fly screen , and did a trial run with the exhausts ready for the sump guard , your videos are so helpful 👍 Also noticed the latest recall so took the front pad out and would you believe there was already corrosion on the brake pin and the bikes done 9 miles ,
Great videos, thanks. When you say the guard is made of "stainless steel", are you using the term loosely to mean chrome-plated? The lustre of the metal does not look like stainless steel, nor do the welds, rather it looks like chrome-plated. Stainless steel has a duller shine, something like a "satin" finish as we say here in the USA. This guard looks too shiny to be true stainless steel, rather it looks like mild steel which has been chrome plated.
I have the official RE large protector, however the bike toppled in stand still position due to rear ending, the design flaw is that the handle bar and silencer protrude out more than the guard, so the handle bar and clutch lever got damaged.
@@stuartfillingham7011 true. We have after market protectors here in India which are wider and could have saved me some heart ache. Just griping sorry.
so the install is pretty easy - correct me if im wrong but you didnt need to support the engine & just had the bike placed on its center stand whilst doing the installation???
It just goes to show you how subjective these things are. I have just finished removing the black compact engine bars from my Interceptor, having taken them off a) because I thought they looked horrible, b) because they made cleaning the engine more difficult, c) because they increased the weight of the machine unnecessarily and d) because I suspected that, in the event of a spill, other bits would take far more damage than the bars themselves, particularly the exhaust pipes and the engine cases, ironically! It was only when replacing the bolts afterwards that I realised that the front engine mount bolt was far too long and didn't have enough thread to enable me to do it up. A trip to The Bike Den in Watford tomorrow, methinks! Anybody want a pair of black ones?
Hi Stuart, I have recently booked myself an Inty 650. I am in a bit of a conundrum whether to fit the compact guard or the large (butterfly) type guard. The motorcycle being inherently heavy, I do not want to add more bulk to it but will the larger guard offer more protection in case the bike takes a tumble while standing still. Is the compact guard enough to save the tank and the exhausts you reckon?
You dont usually use locktite on cradle bolts! the manufacturer didn't use it on these components when the bike was assembled and the instructions didn't specify it so NO!
Hi Stuart, I am a proud owner of a 650 Interceptor Orange Crush, I am very short at about 5 foot 5 and was wondering if you had anything in your bag of tricks to allow me to flat foot the beast, I have already damaged my brake lever because being a returning rider after 25 years layoff I let the bike lay down by mistake and short of not riding my bike for fear of damaging it can you help please!!!! Cheers Rob
yes but they look ugly and spoil the look of the bike! leg protectors were banned here in the UK back in the 1990s as tests showed they actually caused more severe leg injuries instead of preventing them!
thank you for bringing MAG up i used to be a more active member than now , i am pretty sure they got the EU with the help of euro rider groups to repel other legislation, your bike does look good
All of your stuff had been excellent. I've no complaints about your videos where you instruct us on procedures they are the best. But your rant about engine guards was unnecessary I thought. It essentially put-down someone like me who was stupid enough to buy them.
