In this episode of American Viscountess at Rockingham Castle, I join James Saunders Watson as he uncovers nearly 1,000 years of architectural history. From the imposing Norman gateway, to the destruction of the English Civil Wars to the Victorian reimagining of a charming building at the end of an ancient cobbled street - there are fascinating stories to be told in every corner of this Northamptonshire castle.

I have a trip scheduled for spring 2024 to the U.K. We are descendants of several of the families you have mentioned. You know he/she is 20 times removed type. But it's so fun to see the beautiful homes. The one I enjoyed the most was the Scottish home. We're part of the Loudoun family tree. Thanks for sharing. Have fun

Absolutely loved hearing all about Rockingham Castle! So very much HX to learn and remember. Cannot imagine how Mr. Gateway does it and remembers it so well? Well, it is his home and has lived it and loved it and growing with it forevermore! Julie thank you so much for taking us on this tour with you! It was so heartwarming to have a tree planted in honor of Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee year! Certainly deserves all the honor, as she has followed the Lord and tried her best to do right in all of these years while reigning as Queen. Can you imagine trying to ever feel like you are walking in the shadow as a daughter or son, and next in line, to anyone like Queen Elizebeth who is so very well loved?! Would be so hard to ever stand up to all they did, and yet you would need to do it the best you can as each generation and life itself changes and turns take places maybe no one ever saw before you? So you want to have people believe in you and trust you, but you can "Never please all the people all of the time, only some people some of the time" as the saying goes!

One of the many things I love about England (from watching your show and Midsomer Murders) is the penchant for gardening. The beautiful rose garden at Rockingham Castle and all the flowers cultivated in villages. You can't watch anything about the areas outside of cities without seeing such wonderful blooms.

I loved it. Why are so many of the greats unheard of? The best part is that it is still a lived in family home that is treasured. James Watson has stayed quite spry running around that expansive estate. I love the back halls & nitty gritty that tourists don't get to see. Like that back walkway from the kitchen to the other buildings. Brilliant that they kept the cobblestones. Waiting & watching for more, Julie. Plus you have to go back for the roses.

What an amazing place. I think a series on the chapels of these estates would be amazing. I was really waiting to see the chapel for Rockingham. Religion was an aspect of life that I don't think gets covered in modern documentaries. Their faith affected everything in their lives and the history of those buried there tells a different side of their story. Thank You again for the amazing episode.

I imagine this question has probably been asked time and time again, but do people who live in these types of homes find it difficult to feel a personal creative liberty with their homes? I’m guessing there is a little, but I’m just curious. :) I’m sure there is so much familial pride and I think that’s truly beautiful. I’m just curious if there is an Angsty teen somewhere, living in an estate who can’t put their band poster up. Haha! 😂
