After 200 years of transporting the nation’s post, Royal Mail says it is going to stop sending letters by train. Known as ‘Mail by Rail’, the trains inspired famous poems and songs throughout the decades.

Not in a capitalist world. If you're stupid you'd continue to use the same broken/ "slow" service... If you're smart and you understand how the world works you use the service who provides the best to suit your needs

Aye, and now if I want to post a birthday card to my family that live less than 20 miles away it gets picked up and taken to Edinburgh (100 miles away) and takes even longer to arrive back to my family. What a f*cking joke!

A train lasts for 40 years with cheaper rail maintenance than roads need. A van lasts 5 to 8 years and requires a driver for a relatively small amount of mail compared to what a train can carry. This is about taking maintenance off the books since taxpayers already maintain the roads for free from Royal Mail's viewpoint. Charge everyone for road use and the incentives would change, making rail more attractive.

I hope we can turn this around as a nation. Goodness knows we’ve recovered from worse. It’s ironic that fourteen years of Tory government has been worse for the UK than the Second World War.
