From WWII, there is a story asked of soldiers how they knew who they were facing: "If we shot and the return fire is machine gunfire, they're German. If the return fire is intermittent but extremely accurate, they're British. If there is a pause and then the response is artillery, bombers, and everything you can think of, they're American."

Russia clearly knew the oilfield base was staffed with Americans troops of some kind. They sent the Wagner mercenaries in to find out how the Americans might respond. The Russians learned what they wanted to know. The American troops would answer a threat quickly and with overwhelming force. The response was an intentional overkill. The cost of the lives of a few hundred Wagner mercenaries to learn the answer to the question would have been determined by the Russian military in advance to be acceptable.
@MortarMaggot
@MortarMaggot Месяц назад
@@noyopacific The American military is also just incredibly aggressive. From training to standing orders, if there's troops in contact and you're not stuck on a guard spot you go help. In early Iraq and Afghanistan commanders generally had to turn away help to prevent the battlefield from becoming too crowded. And if an American unit is genuinely in danger of being over run it all kicks into an even higher gear. The entire theater is at the disposal of that unit, even just a platoon of 60 guys. I saw that happen once and there were too many planes and helicopters to count coming in to help.

When the US military basically says "Please don't make me kill you." it's not a display of weakness, it's a promise wrapped in a logistics request. Someone has to hump in more ammo afterwards, and do the recovery/forensics. It's likely closer to "Please don't make me write an after-action report, I hate doing paperwork in the field."

Your name is said with reverence here, and I know you can get the job done. Of course, I would always prefer peace, trade, and diplomacy over any military action, but leaders don't feel the cost of war the same way the people do, and sometimes leaders need to be reminded that open dialogue is better than open fire. NATO is capable of delivering this message.

The version I heard from a colleague confirms the phone call to the Russians before the engagement began when the Russians assured the American commander that there were no Russian troops in the area. I understand that to have been common at this time to avoid direct conflict. However, I was told on good authority that there was a phone call after the conclusion of the engagement from the Americans to the Russians in which the Americans simply said “We confirm. As far as American boots-on-ground, it wasn't incredibly well-defended. There were only around 40 American troops vs. 500 Russian/Syrians. The only actual American casualty was a sprained ankle (legitimately). Part of me thinks that Wagner were being dumped into a meat grinder by the Kremlin to test our response time/capabilities/tactics, as they've shown they literally do not care. We threw everything at them to both throw off that analysis, and to let them know that we're overwhelmingly (even disproportionately) prepared for anything they can think of hitting us with. Also I keep saying "us" as in the Americans. I obviously wasn't there. I was probably cleaning out my gutters or pooping or something at the time.

The amount of firepower the US threw at that convoy is staggering. The artillery alone, plus 4 Apaches, plus at least 1 AC-130 gunship, plus Reapers, plus F-15s and F-22s as well as B-52s. This isn't delivering a message, it's shooting the message attached to a flaming arrow through the open window of the Kremlin and having it stick in the chest of the military advisor that said this was a good idea.

@demonman1234
@demonman1234 6 месяцев назад
It'd require a bit more than just the A-10 and Apache. We'd need air superiority (As both aircraft are pretty vulnerable, especially with the A-10 being slow..), and the convoy likely had enough anti-air missiles to make it difficult for either of the two aircraft to operate. Now... if we did have the proper scenario to use these aircraft effectively... LOL (Also, no hate on the A-10, it's my favorite plane in the U.S arsenal. But, I'll admit it's slow and that's a pretty big weakness to it. Even with the insane amount of firepower is can withstand.)

As a former Navy aviator, I flew an F14A and B model in the 80's. Many times our battle group would have the soviet air force come out with two Migs and a backfire bomber. We'd lock up the Migs, Master Arm off then the alarms and lights would go off in their cockpits. Next thing they turned and my wingman and I escorted then out. Later during shore leave I met a Soviet officer there. He was nice and pleasant but along the way, his tone changed and said "you damn Americans invent everything for your military", to which I said to him, if we invert and build it, it's because of his country's style of aggression. He nodded his head and replied, Da (yes) but told me they never thought America was going to build and build and build so many weapons. Like you said, anyone picking a fight with America is sure to regret it.
