As a civilian in a military family this hits hard. I’ve seen this stuff first hand, I get why he did it, and while I don’t agree with burning his uniform, sometimes a grand gesture like that is the only way to get entitled civilians to pay attention to the shit they put veterans through. The way the court treated him is exactly the same way veterans have been treated for a long time after returning home from combat. And is one of the reasons I’ll never judge an angry Vietnam vet.

Enlisting into infantry or any combat role (well if its been decided) is you signed up for. All the shit he's been through is what he got, and many others been through the same, I respect him 100% for that. But you having to rethink all of it because it is dangerous is up to you, but know that's how its always been since the vietnam war and before. What happens after is just pure bad luck with the justice system. PTSD is also something to look out for and you don't know how much it'll affect a person. I lost my repsect for him after he burned the uniform and gave a false meaning to it (like stated in the video) and spat basically at all of us in the name of us not serving.

Don't know what the situation is with UK vets, but US veterans being backstabbed by their own government or people after coming back from war is a common occurrence here. Soldiers will come back with PTSD or Depression or Anxiety, and end up being either abandoned by the VA, or have their guns taken from them for them being a "danger to themselves". Veterans are given physical or mental damage while in the military, then punished for it by the legal system.

I want to enter the Marine Corps. following the footsteps of my dad who served as a combat engineer in the Marine Corps. during Vietnam War. I always heard of how horrible the war was for him and how he never returned home the same as he shipped out. I know I will go into something that will not be easy but I want to make my dad proud of me while is not alive as I speak. For any veterans I care for you and deeply respect you guys. Burning his uniform seems to be the only thing he can do to make a statement. Unfortunately, this guy is otherwise powerless to do something about the situation. It's an unfortunate fact that there are a lot of 'activist judges' in this country, who are more concerned with 'making a statement' and listening to emotion-based arguments than doing what is just and right by the laws they are sworn to uphold. I feel for this guy. He was told he had a duty to defend his country, and that it was for the good of the people he left back home, only to return home to him and end up being treated like trash because society at large consider soldiers like him (and men in general) as disposable. In the US, you are supposed to have the right to defend your property, and those you invite onto it. This includes telling people who are not invited to leave. Even police officers or government officials are legally not allowed onto someone's private property without a warrant or immediate danger to another. Even if he did threaten her with a knife, legally he still did nothing wrong. I'm not sure about the state he's living in, but in mine, there's something called the 'Castle' law, which states that if you believe someone unwelcomed on your property is a threat to yourself or others, you have the right to defend yourself and your family from them, up to and including a threat of deadly force. It's why you don't go wandering through someone's yard without permission unless you're fine with getting shot. Unfortunately there's groups in this country who are constantly trying to get these rights removed. That's not what this guy served in the military to protect, so I don't blame him for feeling that his country has been lying to him this whole time.

You can get a replacement from the DoD once per lifetime, and only once, irregardless of circumstances. But it's not the same. Your original decorations will always have more meaning, being the one's pinned on you by a commanding officer when first awarded. I lost all of mine in a house fire on January 5th of this year. They can be replaced, but it's just not quite the same. So most vets would understand how hard that was to do, no matter if you agree with his actions or not. It is a significant gesture to me anyway.

We can do much better at how we treat returning Veterans. I do have one issue with this man’s actions. His anger, albeit justified in this case, is being painted with a broad brush. Not all Americans turned their back on him. One civilian and one judge acted poorly. To blame all Americans is not fair to the ones who truly care do their best to look out for Veterans after returning home. At the end of the day, everyone’s PTSD and emotional state is their own. My PTSD from working the streets as an EMT is different from yours, Lucas and yourself is unique from this guy’s. I only wish he would have reached out in a different way. This has been discussed a lot by me and those in the military. We all think it's a case of stolen valor. First, claims he left as a E5, after 12 years. 12 years and still an E5?? The left sleeve claims he served 12 years. Yet only 3 hash marks on that sleeve. Which would mean 9 years. 2nd, Claims he won the Purple Heart. He does [in a Purple Heart medal to the uniform before lighting it on fire. BUT, No Purple Heart ribbon. The Purple Heart ribbon is to be on the right side, top right as well. Which can mean he bought the medal at a pawn shop, which he does mention it can be done. But we feel he didn't get the ribbon with it. There are other inconsonances as well. Not to mention, if what he claims happened to him. Why did he accept it and not take it to a higher court? The charges against him were illegal. To many WTH moments with his post.

I think the reason why he burnt the uniform is because he was proudful of it, that badge the uniform itself made him feel prideful, but when trying to fit back into society, and being stabbed in the back and many of his comrades taking their lives cause of this, he just lost pride in his country, his uniform symbolising his country and wat he fought for and sees it as smth disgusting a regret for fighting for a system that backstabs him.

I do agree with you Luke. What I feel and others feel may be different, but I feel the uniform represents the full cycle meaning The work you put in to get there, the current those in currently, and the vets for the future. Not only the ones alive everyone wears a uniform, those from previous battles, the ones alive for the current ones, and the next generation of soilders will as well be wearing uniforms. So I feel that a uniform just like the flag should be held with high respect, sadly not everyone shares my views.

As someone who has never served, (debating enlistment though) I cannot relate to this man's issues. However, as someone who has mental disorders, including those that can cause heightened aggression, suicidal thoughts, homicidal thoughts, and having what can only be described as, my fight or flight response is stuck in fight. With all of this, I CAN relate. I am too afraid to admit most of these disorders simply due to the bias people have. I own knives and firearms, but I won't tell the proper people to help me if I feel suicidal or homicidal thoughts because even if I still have full control of my mental state, and have ways to get help, they will confiscate my knives and firearms. In the state I live in, if a concerned citizen in relation to me, (ie, friend, therapist, or family) contacts police about this, they will not only forcibly confiscate, but also require me to prove in a court of law that I am of sound mind within six months or they will PERMANENTLY confiscate them. Will I see reimbursement for the thousands I've spent on them? No. A prime example of mental illness bias, is when I was in highschool I had an altercation with a police officer. I am high functioning autistic, this means that unless I tell you or you have a psychology background you wouldn't notice. During the incident, my guidance counselor, (who both had access to and KNEW I was autistic and knew my disorders) wrongfully told the police officer that I was ODD, (which can be oversimplified to asshole just to be an asshole) so he came in screaming at me while I was speaking calmly and not interrupting him. Unnecessary yelling and interrupting me cause my fight response. After several minutes of this, I was going to hit something. Him, a wall, something. So I hit a wall, shouted at him and was tackled to the ground. Even the other police officer once he arrived stated on record, "both the guidance counselor who gave a wrongful diagnosis to officer ***, and the officer himself, handled the situation poorly. If officer *** had listened to the individual, who up until the end, was acting in a calm, cooperative manner, instead of yelling at him and denying him the ability to explain in said manner, this entire situation could have been avoided. I strongly recommend that no charges be placed on the individual in question, and that if the family decides to sue for compensation all demands should be given and settled out of court." Sorry for the long post, long story short, while I am not a veteran, I stand with those who are wrongfully marked as dangerous due to mental illness bias. Thus causing them to avoid help, knowing that anything they ask for help with will be used against them.

I'm not going to lie, I felt the same way from several experiences in my past. I am also sure there are more to come. But what this guy should do is try to get the ruling overruled by another court/ judge. Though, burning the uniform is probably one of the most honorable ways to dispose of a uniform. With that aside, it is sad to watch this. I do agree that the U.S. needs to take better care of the Veterans, like him, like myself, etc. I will say, the system is broken. I do see and understand where he is coming from. Not the best way to go about it.

She has been in jail, not for the same reasons, but she did feel betrayed when she was locked up. A veteran fighting for her country, only to be put behind bars. She told me, and I quote; “That woman wronged him, but he wronged himself even more.”

It is super hard to watch the uniform burn. You know what it takes to earn the right to wear it. What each of those ribbons stand for what it took to get that purple heart. Sadly these grand gestures are the only thing that gets people's attention most the time. Soldiers and Veterans are too often used as talking points but rarely are they seen as individuals. Society has this idea that they are made for war, that some how they are both above and below civilians. We say "thank you for your service" then shit talk what they do. We say " PTSD is real" but act like it's just a phase they will grow out of. We say "go and kill for us" but don't bring any of that aggression home.

The US uniform represents America as a country. To put on that uniform means that you have dedicated your life to fight for America and to stand up for the rights of the American people. This veteran burned his uniform because the very same rights that he risked his life to defend seemed like they were not even given to him. The same law that he fought to protect, was completely disregarded by the judge, the woman, and other authorities. I would have done the same thing if I was in his position.

He burned his uniform because it was his. He earned it and everything on it. This betrayal basically shows him that non of that hard work he put in counts for beans. His message is impactful and burning something that meant a lot to him pushes that idea. Now if he was to burn the flag everyone would be up in arms about it and won't listen to what he has to say. I feel for this man, and over other man on this Earth. The system is broken; women seem to be the new enemy and yeah not all women are bad but I don't see many women fight them either. A storm is brewing; and its going to be a bad one when it hits.
