I was with 53sqn Royal Engineers part of 39 Engineer regiment. We moved into the embassy shortly after this. We were told SBS had cleared it. Our immediate job was to resupply water and electricity and basically clean the place up it was a right mess. I remember Iraqi soldiers turning up at the gate dressed in civilian clothes with their weapons and uniform hidden in bags. They had been in hiding and thought it would be safer surrendering to us rather than the locals. The locals were so happy for us to be there, all cheering and taking photos with us and their families. I still have a British flag that I found in the embassy. A surreal experience for a 19 year old British Royal Engineer.

The First Helicopters were Royal Navy Seakings HC Mk4 of 846 Naval Air Squadron. I know because I was there with the squadron when this happened. I had to reconfigure one of our fitted radios to work to frequencies with three decimal places to enable the aircraft to communicate with the American aircraft that were doing the same thing with their Embassy at the same time .

Their embassy is just across from the Arabian Sea on a highly visible street near to the Kuwait Towers. At the time, the US Embassy was located nearby but after the war they relocated inland to an area that is now residential. A strategic move no doubt. The war, while quick and without large numbers of casualties for us, was the opposite for Kuwaitis, who with their small population, ended with almost every family having lost a relative, and after being occupied for 7 months, they finally came out of their houses to freedom, until the black smoke overtook the air. It took an international force of firefighters 10 months to put out the 700 plus oil fires Saddam's forces had set as they exited the county. God bless all the troops who fought the war and the fires of Kuwait! 🇰🇼🇺🇲🇬🇧

The RAF special operations squadron Chinooks are painted black for mostly night ops, it looks like the camo job is an ad hoc in theatre improvisation in a theatre where the aircraft can't be hangared under cover. To answer the question about SLRs still being in use, sort of but not really too much. This we during the phase out period, and was fully retired in 1994. There is a documentary on youtube called "The Gulf War: How Did The British Army Prepare? (1990 Documentary) | Forces TV" during the buildup in 1990 and I was surprised when I watched it that most of the soldiers in it were still using SLRs, Sterlings, Brens, 58 webbing and some were even still wearing OD rather than camo. By the time of the invasion in 91 I'm pretty sure that all the infantry were using L85A1s and only support units still had SLRs.

The helicopter is a sea king, not to be mistaken with the Goliath. As far as I remember it was an SBS operation and 40 and 42 were engaged elsewhere. Most of the SFSG and SF units are equipped with ‘better’ weapons. Got a feeling that you’re seeing the Canadian Rifle used as a nice CQB firearm. The L1A1 had been out of service for some years at this point. I worked my arse off to get to sharpshooter, took ML2 as a fall back to avoid the donkey that was the SA80. Rumour is that Enfield created it for a 7.62 nato round and then got told, halfway through production, to make it 5.56. I was a sun-shiner, spent most of my career between desert and jungle. 26 years, honorable discharge - medical stopped me completing my last stretch.

I think their rifles are L1A1 SLRs. Actually they seem to be carrying a variety of rifles.

That chopper is a Westland Sea-King (I think the "HC-4" variant) My dad was a military helicopter electrician specialising in the Sea-King so I can spot them a mile away. An awesome chopper.

They're Marines so that makes it a Navy deployment, and the British Royal Navy pilots are amongst the best in the world.

It'd be great to see if you could react to the story of Operation Moonshine in 1982, the story of Radio Atlantico del Sur - a clandestine radio station. It's covered in a video called "My Secret Falklands War: When Britain's Military Took To The Airwaves" by Forces News.

Westland Sea king helicopters. Good reliable workhorses for the forces, your president and have only recently been retired from our search and rescue missions in their yellow livery. Flown in them loads of times and always returned safe, which is good enough for me.

Not really related to this video but im going to write it anyway. I've been working with an indian nurse for about 10 years. The other day a colleague and I were talking about Kuwait and she mentioned that she had been there during the invasion. Apparently she had been a young nurse at the military hospital when the invasion happened. she remained trapped in Kuwait for about a month until an Indian billionaire paid for a cargo ship to rescue all the Indians and ship them to Abu Dhabi. She was in the ships cargo hold with other women and children for 3 days in the unbearable gulf heat. She also mentioned that on the morning after the invasion she was bussed from the hospital to her living quarters and saw lots of dead Kuwaiti soldiers in the streets. She described the soldiers as having been strafed by helicopters. I wonder why she never felt it had never been something worth mentioning prior.
