I’m aware how much storage you get at Raleigh as I went there for an armed drill competition when I was in the cadets, all you get I believe is a locker with 3 draws
Hi Callum, love your videos. Definitely the most informative channel with regards to Royal Navy content I have seen! My question is, how long did it take you from PJFT to entry date/PRNC? I passed my PJFT 3 months ago roughly however, i am aware that obviously the waiting times differ all of the time and theres no PRNC currently. My recruiter told me he expects me to be in by December 2021 but to me this seems a bit far from reality at this point. What time did you wait? Thanks
I joined roughly 4 months after I had finished school, that was due to the branch I was joining and the demand for personnel....my advice is to keep in contact with your careers office and try and get more information from them.
I am very happy to have found your channel, I'm from a commonwealth country trying to apply and your videos have been insightful 👍 Blessings to you and your family
Hey man a good friend of mine is over in coldrose, he started at 16, hes 20 now and keeps begging me to go, he does make some very convincing reasons, but i suppose what im trying to say is it worth it even if you arent experienced woth much in life?
In my opinion, if you are looking for a change in lifestyle, a secure job and the opportunity to gain new skills then I would go for it. If its not for you then you can always leave, but at least you can say you have it a go! You will learn everything you need to in the training so life experience doesn't matter entirely :)
Phase 2 allows you to have some more time for yourself, consider it as a militarised University! There will be a steep learning curve for your trade but it will seem more relaxed to phase 1
Discovered your videos this week as I am quite interested in joining and I feel your videos are giving me good realistic expectations and helping me make my decision. As for questions for next episode I have a couple: 1. How did you adjust to sleeping with 5 other guys in close proximity for you? Not a deal breaker for me but will be a big change to my spoilt lifestyle of a double bed at home. Also what are the sleeping/shower arrangements on board and at Raleigh? 2. Having never previously been a part of the military in any form how do you know how to identify and talk to those of higher ranks? Do you get taught that at Raleigh or before you join do you have to learn that? Thanks a lot mate and hope there is more to come.
Wow thank you and I'm glad that you find these helpful! I will take those questions for the next video as they are good points that people should be aware of!
Hey, this video just popped up in my recommended feed because I've been really looking into the Navy as I see it as a potential career path and I have been incredibly interesting by the Silent Service. I was wondering if you could tell me anything about life in the Navy in general or maybe if you have any mates who are submariners and you could tell me about life as a submariner? I really enjoyed this video and I'm going to keep watching your videos! Thanks again mate
Hi, thanks for the vid🙌. I’ve been thinking about joining the navy but as a young (fairly petite) woman I’ve been a bit nervous about the culture especially with some rumours around assault etc? Is there anything you could share about this? Thanks again
Hi and thanks for the comment! The culture of the Royal Navy has been stereotyped as the 'Drunken Sailor' and all the others 'don't drop the soap' etc. You will find many different personalities and characters and you will be spending more time that usual with then due to the nature of the job. Sometimes you do feel pressured into things especially if everyone is partaking like drinking or a group event for example but you can say no and walk away. With regards to assault I have had no experience of anyone I have worked that has claimed they have been assaulted sexually. There are systems in place like any other job to deal with that if it ever did happen. I would hope the friends you make onboard would look after you like the ones I have had and this would never happen.
When do you get drug tested? And what type of tests do they do? I smoke weed regualry and I want a time frame to know when it would be safe to join, I’ve also heard you can declare if you’ve taken anything that may appear could you fill me in?
i'm so glad you did this, I've been planning on joining for over 3 years now, and now i know how much storage you actually get! Good to actually get a sense of how it feels. Thank you so much, this video is so good for me in so many ways!
Bro I’m 24 I’m kinda confused on what I want to do with my life but the Royal Navy is always something that enticed me, a few of my family members served my uncle especially made me fall in love with the idea, I don’t know what I want as a career. I’m going to my local centre to chat but are there any things that shocked you? Thank you in advance!🙌
The change of lifestyle is definitely a shock, especially if you have a solid routine at home currently. The general difference in military life is definitely something to get used to....its hard to explain but some people get used it to quickly and some don't come around to it....its definitely worth the experience especially if you end up on ships with some great trips :D
hi man know this is an old video but still great im just about to get to CPC but ive joined to so submarine weapon mechanic egineering adn im just wondering if you have anything to say about the submarine service
@@keithdocherty7400 they do get runs ashore just not in as many places as GS due to the nature of the submarines and specialist requirements for berthing. But there are some benefits of runs ashore on a submariner like paid hotels and food allowance.
Geordie Gaming Channel just had a look going to watch his other videos. My heart goes out to the guy but it won’t deter me from joining. Are you in the Navy yourself?
Hi Callum I have a question about the interview stage, my recruiter has told me that I need to know and able to talk to the interviewer about the history of the navy and I was wondering if you could give some advice on how to smash the interview?
Hi thanks for watching, I have a video all about the interview on my channel, feel free to take a look! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-owlE6u0VmVU.html
What about hair, I'm a guy but can I get hair cut like women ( e.g. above collar) instead of short back and sides if you know what I mean, I see lots of post about long hair and I think people get confused thinking they mean LONG long hair like below neck but can I get a cut like the women or tie it up?
That is a great question. I'm not sure on the regulations with this nor have I ever seen it. I wouldn't go to phase 1 with that style of hair, but perhaps once you're in you can research into it!
Great Q&A thank you so much for the clarity. I am 28 years old very fit and strong and smartish but have alot of common-sense, I enjoy break dancing and was a UK champion in gymnastics, I work well in teams. How many people that are near my age are normally in every basic training most of the time? And what is the normal level of fitness in basic training/ common-sense will I be carrying 50% of the team all the time? Also I would like to join the HMS Queen Elizabeth is there a way to make sure I get the job role? I love the channel subbed
A loaded comment! I love it! Sounds like you will breeze the training physically but most of the challenges are to do with teamwork! You are as strong as your weakest person and you will all grow together, this is the important part as it carries throughout your career. Once you have passed through training, you will get the opportunity to choose your preferences in drafting but being a naval aviator may lean you more towards a draft on an aircraft carrier!
nearly finished year 11 and want to be a marine engineering specialist submariner. im 6'4 and im worried about being in the needed BMI range, do you have any tips?
This was really insightful, just a couple questions about like how time off works, like how often do you stay at shore? By this I mean like what are the equivalent to weekends off when your not on deployment? And also do you have any knowledge on the accelerated apprenticeships? Much appreciated 👍
Hiya mate, looking to apply in a few months (currently just building fitness) Unfortunately I am 33, how do you think Raleigh will be for an old timer like me being surrounded by teens?
I had someone of your age in my recruitment intake....he had plenty of experience to give to many of us younger folk and he was definitely a memorable part of my training.
Hi Callum, new to the vids and really appreciate the great advice. I’m applying for RN Chef, wonder if you have any insight on what it’s like, were any of your pals chefs, how it’s regarded on the ship? Maybe just even what the food is like!? Cheers mate
Naval Chefs are extremely hard working considering their work times, early mornings to later evenings due to meal times. The food is normally good on board depending on the skill of the chef on duty really. But I never normally complain about food. Everyone tries to befriend the chef for obvious reasons haha 🤣
Haha makes sense! Thanks for the quick reply. One more qu while I’ve got ya; I’ve often read about forces personnel getting amazing opportunities to play for sports teams, or go on skiing expeditions, or also get funded to study maybe for degree qualifications while you’re working. Have you experienced that sort of thing or is it more like, do your training, get deployed, do your job? ... maybe a longwinded question but appreciate any insight. Cheers
@@lordwonka99 you will have chances to play for any sports team you wish, the Navy covers alot of sports. these often have some form of interservice competition which usually carry some weight into the proffesional sporting world. yes some people have been scouted from this platform to take part in international teams. The Navy also gives you the chance to obtain a higher level of education with Learning credit schemes which you can put towards degrees etc. in my line of work i have the oppurrtutnity to get certified in engineering and other streams of that world to various levels depending on how far you go. It is a rather flexible job and if you are driven to achieve a certain goal and you can be spared then you will get the oppurtunity to achieve it, usually with support too!
Recently had my Recruitment test and failed. I have went out and bought £100 worth of books time to dig deep and get revising. Got a resit in a few month time. Have you got any tips on how i could do better ? This video has been very inspiring cheers mate.
Hey im taking my RNRT in December for a CT (cryptologic technician) i was wondering if you know anyone that is in that branch and what it is like?? like the day to day general tasks that are done etc, because the description on the royal navy careers site makes me really interested in it and what i could possibly do when/if i was ever to leave the navy. but i just wondered if you had any more info on hand? P.S Love the videos really decent information, proper down to earth as well
Sorry for the long wait for a reply. The truth is I can't really tell you much about the branch. The fact that it's a cryptologic branch tells me it's quite secretive and a need to know basis. Quite interesting if you ask me haha
I'm in Year 9, and I've always wanted to be in the Royal Navy, and work as a Warfare Specialist. I was wondering, what is the discipline like? And what are the pros and cons of being in the Navy?
Yes, if you are not working a duty on ship or alongside the weekends are usually your own. Deployments are obviously deployments I dont think I need to say more on that matter!
Hi Callum mate, Really keen to join and be an aircrewman.. have you got any experience on what that role is like or did u see these guys doing what they’re doing? Cheers.👍🏼
Any advice for me? I'm going for it myself. Got my entry date for march. 27 yr old and need to brush up on my maths haha. What should I prepare mostly?
@@tetchedink7980 you will learn everything you need to on the course but as you say, a basic understanding of maths and physics may give you an edge when I comes to the ME world. Obviously it's an engineering course so a general interest in the subject will help you learn faster, but I'm sure you have this already otherwise you wouldn't have chosen this branch!
Do you have any advice for someone interested in Officer roles, particularly warfare and logistics roles? I’m 32 but got lots of experience and really fit
Do you have any information on AET’s (aircraft engineering technician) I’m joining hms Raleigh in January looking for as much info as possible. I’ve done lots of research looking for more haha. Many thanks Akmal akhmed
I'm sure you will know more than me on this topic, your phase 2 is in HMS SULTAN and you can be found working on any platform that has an aircraft onboard!
@Rob Wilton thank you so much for the reply ! I’d love to know more if that’s okay to get in contact with you.seeing you were previously in there aswell so would love some guidance and tips.
I’m looking at joining the navy (surface fleet) and there’s a few different roles that interest me so I have to ask, are there some roles that mean you get deployed more than others? I wouldn’t want to go into an awesome role but only go out to sea like twice a year or something haha
Take a look through my channel i have an RNFT series that might help you out. I am in no means a Physical Training Instructor and all the advice I provide works for me!
@@SP-iw4sy I think it is always useful owning a car in the armed forces due to the nature of the job and the travel dependencies. During a deployment you can keep your car at home or round a friend's or parents. Register it SORN or whatever you believe is best but having a car is very useful
What roles are like the infantry of the navy? Like for example lets say i want to just walk about with a rifle looking out for enemy ships so like on guard, is there any roles like that?
It's a large branch that has different sections, Weapons, sensors and comms. As an ET you will gain experience in all sections. The branch names pretty much explain what the job role entails
WiFi is a no at the moment. There are plans for it but only for communication usage. Consoles can come onboard as long as you are happy with the risk and you can stow it away after use! I have taken a laptop, console and handheld console onboard and have had no problems.
My 16 year old daughter also starts in Jan (3rd). I'm so nervous about it all, especially as she'll be doing basic training in colder months. She just passed her PRNC this week and although it was really tough she absolutely loved it. Maybe our kids will be in the same group : )
what are the gunners on the side of the ship as in there branch and also is there anyway to get in with asthma its been my dream since i was 5 or do i just have to stay in cadets but its my dream and i don't mind what branch im in as long as i get in so is there any way i could join when im 16
The gunners are usual Warfare Specialists or Seamen Specialists. you would have to consult your GP as im not too sure on the current rules with asthma. I believe you can join if you havent had an attack for a certain period of time, dont quote me on that though.
I have a phases 1 top tips video on my Channel which may help highlight challenges. But I would say the possibility of not enough rest. It will be tough but if you are organised then this shouldn't be a problem. Just keep busy until everything is done for the dsy then think about resting!
Hey brother! These videos are great, just a quick question. I was wondering did you have any relevant experience prior to your etwe role in engineering? I just turned 21 yesterday so am an oldie, I have been working in people oriented roles, and am now looking to progress in the RN. I am thinking I would love the RN Police, I may also consider the etwe. All the best!
I joined the navy straight from school so I had no experience other than a paper round and a pot washer haha! Thanks for your kind words it means a lot!
@@CallumFrogley Thanks for the reply! It seems like a pretty damn good opportunity for the right type of person to pursue, as I was watching and researching I was shaking a little bit with excitement haha. Keep up the great work with the videos 👍🤙
I know plenty of seamen specialists who love their job and have been doing it for years, plenty of variation of work withing the role from gunnery to basic seamanship. Great hands on role!
Answer number 1: Yes you get paid from day 1 Answer number 2: depends on your ships programme but usually the ship has a couple of months to reset and conduct essential maintenance before heading back out on any major tasking.
Hi I was just wondering if you have any knowledge on the sea man specialist role. I mainly would like to know how varied it is as I'd like to find a career with different experinces. If you have any into on this do you know what kind of work rotor do they work on as I understand it is a multi role Job
The typical working day alongside is 8-4 unless you are duty then you will be required to stay onboard for the duration of your duty! Outside of that the time is your own. Deployed or vessels at sea working different routines due to the nature of the job.
2 questions 1.Can I get my drivera license in the Royal Navy or should I get it before I join 2. What is the best course you can take that would be most useful after your service. For example I was thinking of Seaman Specialist, would that be any good?
Awesome video, cheers for the insight man! I am joining as Royal Navy police because i want to basically be an international police officer, help in training foreign police forces etc. Are RNP not liked in the navy as regulators weren't or will I still get as much enjoyment from the social life as you have... cheers man, keep em coming! 👍
The RNP seems like a great branch to get the qualifications you need to eventually achieve your goal. The regulators are stereotyped as are many branches in the RN but your social life will be as you make of it. I've know many regulators who are now RNP and still enjoy the socials with the rest of us. The stereotypes are only ever a joke these days. :D
@@CallumFrogley legend! I thought as much but without hearing it from the horses mouth, it's hard to tell as an outsider. Cheers for all the insights man! I look forward to pushing for my goals! 👍👍
No one likes the RNPs ☺️ Na I’m just joking it’s the same as every branch there are some that think they have so much power so just don’t be one of them and you will be fine.
@BruhVr Just go for it mate, you’ve nowt to lose. My interview is this month, just apply through the website and they’ll get in touch to talk through your options for what you’d like, the career advisors aren’t scary or overarching they’re as helpful as anything. They will then ask for your documents like birth certificate, education certificates etc. After that you’ll go through the medical questionnaire, eye test and medical exam. Oh yeah and start running regularly, the navy are shit hot on cardio.
I'm really thinking about joining the royal navy but I also really want to join the army Can you smoke ciggerates while in training and on deployment Can you drink alcohol while in training and on deployment
Hello, I am currently in the process of joining and I have one concern, when on shore do you get weekends off? Because I would want to spend those days seeing my partner and its the only factor holding me from moving forward with my application. Thanks
If you are alongside your home port or working in an establishment within the UK you will have the opportunity to go home at the weekend unless you are duty that weekend, Of which a rosta is usually produced prior to the month commencing
@@CallumFrogley So does this mean that I will constantly on ship? Or are there naval bases where I would be on land; this has made me reconsider my choice of branch of military
@@lurch5376 really depends on your branch and where you are assigned to if you are assigned to a ship you may spend 3 years on that ship (this won't be all at sea) but then again you may be assigned to an establishment.....most assignments last 3 years approximately
@@CallumFrogley Thanks for the information, this has made me realise that the navy probably isn’t for me. I’m glad I found out before it’s too late to withdraw and start somewhere better suited to me. Thanks again
Hi Callum I’m looking to either join the Royal Marines or potentially the RN. For the Marines i really want that green beret. I’m thinking of going in to be either a pilot or an air engineer both at officer ranks. Is it worth doing it in the Navy or should i stay in Civvy Street.
I think it's always worth giving the military a go, you can always leave and if you do leave as a qualified pilot then you will be able to take that into civvy street!
The only blood test I remember receiving was Day1 of Phase 1 training. I believe this is so the Navy can build a current medical documentation for you.
Have you ever spoke to a submariner and have heard any good sides of it? In the process of joining for WE submariner so any advice would be really helpful
Also to add to that I have a mate who is doing the fact same role and is now doing his submarine training at Faslane he said it is very hard lots of long text books and tests to pass every 1-2 weeks. Deployments can be upto 5 months aswell which is a very long time under water
Keith Docherty No start date yet, just been told monday is my medical. Have seen it can be up to 5 months but I think I’ll be okay with that. Seems it’ll be hard with all the tests and things but should be worth it in the end
Hi there. I am a 16 year old boy who has 3 weeks left of school before I leave. I am planning on joining the navy, but I am not happy with the amount of time you spend away from home. Is there ways you get to see family and friends more often. Or do you get used to the amount of time you spend away
If you are not at sea or deployed then the weekend are usually your own (unless covering a weekend duty). You can use this time to travel home and spend time with friends and family.
i REALLY want to join the royal navy but im unfit, what are the would you say standards that you should meet in order to pass the HMS Raleigh. Also i know this isnt your sector but i would really like to join Aviation, do you know anyone that took this branch or anything yourself? Im also finishing university so i dont know what roles i could take
Hiya mate. Was just wondering if you knew any of the major differences lifestyle wise between the RAF and the RN. Trying to decide which to apply for and it’s proving a tough one
I'm sorry I can't answer this one as I haven't had much experience with people in the RAF. I can imagine the principles are the same though with the training. Sorry about that!
Hiya, I’m 16 and I applied as a WS and passed everything which I guess is good, but just waiting to hear about my medical. Really just can’t wait to get started :))
J. My CA said there’s a chance I could go to Raleigh at the end of this year or the start of next, what about u. Hopefully we hear the medical soon though aha.
Heyy cara, I’m 17 going in as an ETWE , the medical process is strange as the doctors had PPE and there’s a broad range they do etc, I passed mine but failed my eye sight so my recruiter helped me sort it so best of luck to youu:))
James Coleman hi James sorry for the really slow reply aha, I’m glad to hear u got everything sorted with your medical, have u been given an estimate time for your Raleigh date yet? Good luck :)
Do you think if you pass the PJFT you'll manage basic training? Do you need to be able to do all the phys stuff straight away or are you allowed to build up to stuff over 10 weeks?
Good question and the answer is I'm not sure. We carry survival suits onboard for people of 'special measure' and these fit persons up to 7ft I believe? It would be a question for the careers office but I have not herd of this being a problem in my experience.
Hi mate, I'm in sixth form studying engineering manufacturing and design. I'm torn between ET and seaman specialist. From your time in the navy, could you give me some insight into what a seaman specialist does. Cheers. great vid btw
Seaman specialist is a great hand on role. Onboard you will find them manning the helm as the bosons mate, driving sea boats, manning weaponry or conducting upperdeck husbandry
You have the potential to be deployed anywhere really, the Royal Navy has the ability to be deployed in many areas due to its adaptive nature to where it is needed. Deployments and range from 6-9 months. But sometimes you could be away for 1-3 depending on the job!
Hiya, was just wondering this, beginning of the year had counselling for low mood and anxiety and few months ago stopped it cause I was much better I haven’t had a single problem since never been on medication and I’m doing very well now, will this be a problem?
I would love to know the answer to this but unfortunately I am not qualified but, it wouldn't hurt going through the recruitment process anyway. When it gets to the medical point just bring it up if you feel comfortable to do so!
Callum Frogley yeah I’ve already passed my interview, got my eye test and stuff coming up on Wednesday handed in medical questionnaire so will see soon I guess
@@josephchittenden9154 there are councillors within the armed forces and a few thing that you can do to ease your mind, mental health is become more and more important within the armed forces which is great. Don't be afraid to speak out, I'm sure many other are thinking similar thoughts :)
Callum Frogley yeah like it doesn’t affect me anymore haven’t had it in months I’ve never been better tbh! So hopefully they can see that and it won’t affect me like getting in
I have had a similar question to this before. Alongside home port is usually 8-4 unless you are duty, then you are required to stay onboard for the period of that duty. At sea you work 8-4 and whenever required after that.
This ad is absolute nonsense I used to be a writer in the navy its a very boring job that qualifies you for nothing once you leave, treat this crap with a HUGE pinch of salt
@@CallumFrogley I find your videos quite entertaining but you are not telling the whole story the rubbish living conditions and the large amount of AB's that cannot wait to get out!!!!
If you are joining as an officer I'm not too sure what your training will be like but I believe the concept will be similar. Mine warfare will be also be similar to a warfare specialist training but from what I have heard you will be doing some sea spec stuff aswell as there is only one sea spec on those ships.
